This James Buchanan Holt may connect in some manner with the Holts who were in the Bedford County, TN area. For a number of years, there was a misconception that the Bedford County Holts were of English origin and descended from the Chief Justice. I believe that there was a book published within the past 30 years that passed the same story along. Nevertheless, professional genealogical researchers have produced irrefutable evidence that these Holts were of German origin and descended from the Michael Holt (Hans Michael Hold) who arrived at what became known as the Second Germanna Colony in VA in 1717.
