Thy seythe (sic) and glass of time are not the emblem of the gentle power. The sands run fitfully and swiftly through thy glass. Thy reaping its harvest of death. It claims alike its victims, the young, the old, grave and gay, the exalted and the humble. In its relentless demands it recently invaded the home of J.W. Holt of this city and laid claim to his aged father, James Buchanan Holt, age 101 years and six months. He was born near Buchanan's Bridge, Penn. (sic), on the nineteenth day of July 1792. His father, Nathaniel Holt, died in Jackson County, Kentucky at the close of the late war between the North and the South, age 100 years. The deceased James B. Holt was a great grandson of Lord Chief Justice Holt of London, England, and was the last male descendent of the third generation of this Jurist. James B. Holt was one of the pioneers of Tenn. He was a man possessing many fine qualities, bravery and faithfulness. He treasured no wrong. He loved his people and his beautiful mountain home. Up to within a few says of his death, his mind was perfectly clear and he discussed the probabilities of recovering his portion of the two million dollars left by Chief Justice Holt. He was simple in manner and approachable at all times. He kept in close touch with all his friends and neighbors. He could be depended on for references to dates and family records. He was the leading spirit in the effort being made by the Holt heirs to recover the vast amount of money and property that is believed will be received by them of whom there are many: Mrs. J. Sawyers, Mrs. Lucinda Carter, Mrs. W.S. Brown, all of North Carolina. Mr. J.W. Holt of this city, Mrs. Murdock, wife of Dr. Murdock of St. Louis, MO., Mrs. Hilliard of Port Conway, Va., Mrs. Rhoda Waters, wife of Dr. Waters of Knox County, and S.A. Holt of Indian Territory.
