My opinion is that if someone is going to move the stone they should also move the remains. Bonnie, that would be "nice", but costs $$ (above $5K per grave, I'm guessing), so is sometimes avoided for the $$ reason, as families never want to bear this burden. Yes, I am a Holt descendant as well. First I would like to say I'm amazed at just how much communication goes on w/ the Holt emails....fantastic! Havent had time to play w/ my research lately but yesterday I started reading the cemetery issues. This has burned me up for years. Maybe due to being out of respect. It's not just the Holt family...it's everyone's family & this has gone on for so many generations everywhere. Yes, I think the mummies of Egypt are cool, really amazing are the bodies of the Bog...but when one really sits & thinks abt it. Always hear of the mummies and what items they had w/ them, etc... They had those items w/ them for a reason...they believed in afterlife...they didn't take those items w/ them to the grave thinking that "oh maybe those folks in a few hundred yrs & especially those in the 21st century will dig us up scatter our belongings & dissect us to find out yup it's a 'mummy, was human!'....then put us in a glass case under bright lights for us all to see!" On a personal note...I dont leave the house daily w/out makeup muchless want someone to see me after thousands of yrs of not having any on! They built their decorated tombs....just as anyone today would purchase a nicely decorated above ground vault & pay thousands for that solid mahogany coffin. I've yet to hear of a mummy being put back into its place yet they keep the tombs & pyramids open for the public to see. Out of respect if those tombs are remaining they bodies need to be placed back. Same goes for when I went searching for an ancestor in PA....they started moving bodies from an old cemetery...til they found so many they quit...so now my ancestor is somewhere from under the grassy part of a park to under the middle of a street, they don't know. Sickens me. HA supposed I wanted to go visit his grave...am i supp. to go block traffic, stand in the middle of the street & put some flowers in a vase?...in Philadelphia??? Guess I could if i want the guys in the white coats to come pay me a visit. Here in Roanoke when I ride down one road there is a hill right above by an on-ramp. I asked around why those were there b/c the tombstones are leaning, dissarray & just the way they were sitting...something didn't seem 'right.' Found out there was a cemetery where they were placing this road & interstate above it so they dug 'em up & sat them there. Say it was a Holt descendant....you'd have to hop the 'STATE' fence to get to it & who is to say the tombstone is w/ the right person. Then I bet you 10-1 the cops would show up & ask what you're doing there on state property. Same goes for reading abt one of my NC ancestors who was in the war...tombstone knocked down & they're digging to put in a subdivision. They need to block off part of that land & leave that area for an old cemetery. Doubt greedy corporate America would do such a thing! Or like one relative I looked for in London....found out he was buried in a cemetery which in late 1800 to early 1900's was dug up w/ the rest of them...some were reburied and most were dumped into the river....why? So a parking lot could be put in, oh excuse me...'Car Park'. Like us folks of today wanting to be buried in that special place we want...how long would we get to stay? Noone can really say #5th gen. great grandma is looking down on us or has no clue what is going on b/c she's gone, gone. The world is a busy place, new things coming up, old things coming down....but my opinion is anyone needs to leave old graveyards alone just to respecting fellow man. If I pay $10,000 to have myself buried in a beautiful coffin, in a place of my choosing etc....I best get to stay in that spot for alllllll eternity! Isnt that why they call cemeteries, graveyards etc....that 'final resting place?' Don't be too sure....I better read that fine print! :)
