James Holt, who was sent from Russell County in 1890 for 21 years for manslaughter, passed a counterfeit nickel on Joe De Bora, another convict. De Bora told one of the guards about the money, and an examination was made which resulted in the discovery of two pans of dies made of plaster of Paris (a white powder that forms a plaster when it is mixed with water and then hardens into a solid, used in making casts, molds and sculpture). The dies were in possession of James Ballou, sent from Laurel in 1894 for nine years for train wrecking. Ballou and Holt, when questioned, acknowledged that they had stolen the plaster of Paris from the physician's room of the prison hospital, and that they had made the dies themselves. Half a dozen lead nickels were found on the convicts, and the matter was reported to the United States marshal. I'm not related as far as I know. Joyce Shannon Zandri Eliminate the IRS!
