    1. [HOLT] Jonathan Theodore Holt 1872-1953 GA, OK
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: bholt9359 Surnames: Holt Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.holt/3204/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I've been working on and off on this ever since I started genealogy and I just can't seem to solve this one. I can't find Jonathan Theodore Holt (my 3rd great grandfather) before the 1910 census (and prior to marriage). I have found him in the 1910, 20 and 30 census but nothing before that. So, I can't confirm his parents. Here's what I know: Jonathan Theodore (JT) Holt b. 09 Oct 1872 Georgia, USA d. 05 Jul 1953 Asher, Pottawatomie, OK, USA m. 16 Aug 1896 Marietta, Love, OK, USA to Zenith Elvira Mullins He moved from GA to Love Co, OK sometime before 1896 and moved again to Asher, Pottawatomie, OK by 1910. I'm almost certain his father is George A. Holt b. 18 Jan 1852 George, USA d. 12 Jan 1900 Marietta, Love, OK, USA His mother I am less certain about. The George above was married to a Nancy Jane, however family records say JT's mother was Catherine. Two wives have been considered. I have found the George Holt, b. abt. 1852 in Cherokee Co., Georgia that you're bound to run into (1860,1870,1880 census) and, yes, later he is married to a Catherine, but I can't connect him to JT. If anyone can find JT before 1910 I would be extremely grateful. Thanks so much in advance. Brad Holt Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: Silkflorals Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.holt/3202/mb.ashx Message Board Post: looking for any info about John Holt who worked in the NJ Silk Mines. He married my great grandmother 31 Aug 1886 in Philadelphia. PA and her father banished him from the home that same night. It is my belief he might have been a polygomist. I think he only married her because he got her pregnant. My father told me stories that John used to come to Philadelphia every weekend and give my grandfather (His son) a silver nickel. He would meet him on the street corner. His marriage license lists a birth date of 26 Aug 1864 in Newark, NJ, but NJ has no record of this. I wish to end the mystery to my maiden name and find out where it had its roots. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I also want to note, my great grandmother never remarried after John was banished. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: pepperdog_1 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.holt/3177.1.1.1.1.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Yes I know the book. I started reading it. I have to keep remembering that it is a novel. I started tracking inaccuracies as I read thinking it would likely be accurate but after a while I realized that it would make a complicated story if all of the information was historically accurate. Just as an example, she mentions that Mary Toothacher was her only sister. She actually had at least two others living in Andover at the time. Of course this would complicate the story, since I have not been able to find out what her sisters did during the trial... History is quiet about this. Also she says the grandfather died years before...but he actually died around Oct 1690... meaning that when they arrive in Andover in Dec 1690... the grandfather had only just died. This too would complicate things. So I assume that there are reasons for the changes. But it points out that you can't rely on historical novels for solid info, but more to capture the spirit of the times Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: ed15271 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.holt/3201/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am looking for any connections to this John Holt Sr. b. c.1740 lived in Prince William Co. VA in 1762 and/or earlier. Where did he come from before that? Was he an immigrant? Did he have any family other than included below in this timetable? Are there any known descendants of Anne Holt Thomas or William Holt or any other of the unnamed children that were counted in the 1784-7 census? Timetable and Paper Trail for Granville Co NC Holt Family Members Last update: 4-30-08 For clarification: Charles Holt is not the son or grandson of Michael Holt of Orange Co. NC & Alamance Co. NC as it has finally been proven by Family TREE DNA comparisons made in November, 2004. By the same DNA procedures in 2005, Relationships have also been established between Charles Holt, James Holt, and John Holt, Jr. who married Sarah Fuller. This relationship does imply that the elder John Holt referred to below must surely be the father of said Charles, John, James, and William, Anne and others. Where known, I will refer to the older John as Sr. and the youngest John as Jr. John Jr. also had a son named John (III). 1756-60 Thomas Holt sells land to Green Hill, pg. 701 Bk. 6, Granville Co. NC (Since Charles was born in Prince Wlm. County, VA, this does not look likely to be his father.) 1762 - Mar 30 Charles born Prince William Co. VA per his RW pension application (Have copy) 1764 - May 1 an Elizabeth Holt m. Samuel Birch or Burch, Granville Co. NC (Dau of Thomas? Or maybe Sister or Sister in Law of John Sr?) 1765- John Holt Sr listed on Tax Rolls Granville Co. NC for the first time 1769 - John Holt Sr listed on Tax Rolls Granville Co. NC 1771 - John Holt Sr on list of Granville Co. NC Militia Co. of Capt Sol Alston and Lt. Philemon Bradford 1778- John Holt Sr signed Oath of allegiance of the State of NC and for the County of Granville and District of Beaver Dam taken by the Subscribers and administered by Thomas Banks, J.P.. (copied later in this document) 1778 - Nov 19 As Chain Bearer, Charles Holt is listed on Survey report of John Holt Sr property on Robertson Creek, Granville Co. NC done by order of Memucan Hunt, Entry Officer of Claims for Lands in the County of Granville, NC, dtd 26 Aug 1778. (Have copies) 1779-90 John Holt Sr sells land to John Chadwick, pg. 645 Bk. O, Granville Co. NC 1780 - Sep 15 Charles joined Capt B. Moore's NC Militia in Granville Co. NC served 3 ½ months per RW pension 1781 - Jun 6 Charles joined Capt Moore's NC Militia again for 5 months, RW pension application. A DAR application says SC Minuteman, which is in error according to his pension application, those records show NC Militia 1784 - Charles and John Sr both listed on Tax Rolls of Granville Co. NC 1784 - Oct 8 Anne Holt m. John Thomas Granville Co. NC (Listed in Beaverdam District 1786 census 1 wm 21-60 1 wm -21 1 wf all age, 5 names from John Holt) 1784 - Dec 19 James Holt m. Sarah Heflin Granville Co. NC James Holt was BM (not listed on 1786 or 1790 census. See note below on the 1786 census) James & Sarah moved west along the same migration route as Charles. Both James and Charles were living in Rutherford Co. TN at the same time. They both had children born in NC, GA, and TN. James died in Moulton, Lawrence Co. AL and Sarah moved on to Washington Co. AR with her children 1785 - Feb 15 Charles Holt married Martha (assumed to be Rackley then) in Franklin Co. NC per their RW pension applications (Have copies). The marriage is not found recorded in Franklin Co. NC records per her RW pension application file. 1785 - Dec 25 Charles' 1st son William Charles Holt born Granville Co. NC. 1786 - Charles Listed on 1784-87 NC State Census in Granville Co. Beaverdam District, 2 wm 21-60, 1 wf all ages, (note: first child not listed - probable error in age posting on white males as 2 wm 21-60). For some reason or another Charles does not appear on a Federal census record until 1820 in St Clair Co, Alabama 13 names from Charles is John Sr , 2 wm 21-60, 4 wm -21 & 60 , 5 wf all ages. . James and his wife could possibly be included with John's census listing. 1788 - Charles' 1st daughter Rebecca born Franklin or Granville Co. NC 1789 - Feb/Apr Creed Vinvent(Vincent) proved deed from Jno. Holt Sr to Alex Vincent for 100 acres 1789 - Mar 15 Jeremiah Rackley m. Sally Hale Granville Co. NC and were not on the Tax Rolls for either county, therefor not included on 1790 census for either of the counties. 1790 - Dec 11 Charles' 2nd son John Canie Holt born Franklin or Granville Co. They do not know how they are connected to Nicholas, so I have been trying to determine if one of Nicholas's decendants headed south early enough to tie into this person...but haven't found anyone heading out of NE until the mid 1800s. I am the Administrator of the Family Tree DNA Holt Surname Project and I can tell you that the cost for testing through Family Tree DNA direct will be higher than going through the Holt Surname Project at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/holt We have one female researcher who is a member of our project who had a male relative take the test for her. He matches up with the Nicholas Holt DNA but they are still living in England. He is Kit 63919. If you go to my website at http://HoltFamilyDNAproject.com you can also see abbreviated lineages for our membership plus a few who tested through DNA Heritage. I was wondering if one of you is Kit N48033 because I would still like to have your lineage for this very purpose . . . comparison by others but keeping the living persons private. Two of our members are from the same family and they have the NC and TN connections, but they do not know how they might be related to Nicholas. All of the separated groups in the lineage and DNA charts are different unrelated lines. So you see that we have many different Holt lines not just by spelling. If there is anything that I can help you with just contact me at emh1930@suddenlink.net Ed Holt Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. What I did was to have my father participate in the National Geographic Genographic project(https://www3.nationalgeographic.com/genographic/?fs=www5.nationalgeographic.com ). For males you can either have them test the x chromasomes (DNA from the mothers side) or Y Chromasomes (male line of DNA). I had the Y Chromasomes tested. When I got the results they told me that if I wanted to share the information to click a box and it was shared with familytreedna.com. then I went to familytreedna.com and found I could see who else I was a match with or I could also join a group. I joined the Holt DNA group where you can see other Holts DNA groupings and get a feel for which family you are most closely aligned with. (http://www.holtfamilydnaproject.com/) The other option is to go to familytreedna.com direclt (http://www.familytreedna.com/Default.aspx? ) and order tests through them. I believe the costs are about the same. At the time the cost was $99/kit. If you go to the national geographic site you will see that your purchase of a kit goes towards a bigger gene research project looking at migration patterns and collecting DNA samples from remote populations around the world. It is all very intersting. I assume that over time I will learn more about the family as more people participate. You will not learn details about recent family....but you will get a rough idea on where people came from... and how they migrated over thousands of years. Neat stuff Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I do not have any information on his anceestors. I have not done the DNA bit and as far as I know none of my relatives have. 3. I am a female far removed from my Mary "Polly" Holt who married Nicholas Powell; they were my great-great-great grandparents. Nonetheless, I am interested in their ancestors and would be very interested in seeing the Holt DNA reports and learning who might be related to me. My research has been done almost entirely via the internet, so I cannot say I have sources for my data, but...for what it's worth, I believe that... my line runs: Mary, Benjamin (Sarah LITTLE), NC->KY William B. (Eleanor HEARD), VA->NC? Ambrose (Barbara ESTES), VA->TN? Plunkett Harroway (Elisha ESTES). VA Richard Sr. (Margaret PLUNKETT) born in Rochdale, d Essex Co, VA Robert - Rochdale John - Rochdale I'd like to correspond with any relatives. I don't know enough about this to tell if that is a big difference or not. Nicholas came over in 1635 on the James. He was one of the original members of the church in Andover, and from what I can tell he was a very religious person... so I suspect he left for religious reasons. He is said to have come from Romsey, Hants, Eng. He was one of the founders of the town of Andover. And I notice that there is an Andover near Romsey... so I wonder if there is a connection. Do you know anything about the history of what was going on in this part of England in 1635.. he would have left in April of that year. I am related to Nicholas through three of his children, Samuel, James and Elizabeth. FYI there is also a Salem witch trial element to the family. Samuel and James married Allen sisters (Hannah and Sarah). Their sister Martha Allen Carrier was hung as a witch. There are rumors that Martha's husband, Thomas Carrier was actually the fellow who executed Charles I. Absolutely no proof... the reason people make this link is that he was very tall and stood out! and I assume that Morgan or whoever the fellow was who did the deed was also very tall. there are many many people related to Nicholas Holt....but no one has been able to find out anything about his ancesters. I have seen postings suggesting that people have checked records in Romsey and can not find him there. So maybe he came to Romsey from somewhere else. My Holt relatives left Rochdale in 1646 for St, Mary's, Maryland. Your Nichlas may be related. I do not know of any other brothers or sisters of my ancester. My ancesters family supported the Royalist against Cromwell. They lost. My ancester resigned from an office which he was force to do by Cromwell officials in 1646. If your relative was a member of the same family, he might feel the need to leave (ONLY THEORY). In a 1633 census of men of military age in the Rochdale area, there were nine Robert Holts and six John Holts. Rochdale is northeast of Manchester near Oldham. You talked about DNA. My relatives would be the Robert - Richard Holt line. A few descendants have had their DNA matched to this line. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Or are you talking about a Nicholas Holt living in Kentucky much later? I had my father participate in the DNA project and found a DNA match to a Holt in TN, but I can not find any of Nicholas's children (he settled in Andover MA around 1645 or so) who headed south.... so I am trying to figure out if they are decendents of my Nicholas or perhaps another Holt who could be a brother or cousin of Nicholas. There are several Holts who came south around the same time as Nicholas. DNA of Randall Holt who came to VA is not an exact match with my Nicholas... so I thought perhaps there is another Holt or perhaps decendants of Nicholas came south. Have any of your Holt males participated in any of the DNA projects? If not you should check out the national geographic genome project. I did this with my parents and it is really interesting. One thing I have learned is that my Nicholas Holt is connected to Holts living in Lancashire England. How they are connected I may never know...but it is still interesting.
