The first record that I find him mentioned is in the Surry Co. Deed book #7, p 103. Mathew Gibbs, son of Mathew Gibbs of Albemarle Parish, binds himself to Nathaniel Holt of Nottoway Parish in Southampton Co. as an apprentice to learn to be a Saddler. Recorded 15 Jan 1754. Drury born Dec. 1759 in VA. Drury Holt was in the Montgomery County, VA Militia 1782-1787 I've heard he was at the Battle of Pt. Pleasant in 1774, but he would have been pretty young. That battle wasn't well documented, and I have found no proof that Drury Holt was there. Hawkins County, NC - (TN since 1796) Land "Earliest Tennessee Land Records & Earliest Tennessee Land History" David Holt, File No.985, Hawkins County, 100 acres, Grant 757, Grant Date 27 Feb. 1796, Entry 216, Entry date, 21 Feb 1780,Bk ,88, Pg 502 on N. Side of Holston River. On the line below David Holt, there is Drury Holt, File No. 984, Hawkins County, 50 acres, Grant 756, Grant Date 27 Feb. 1796 (same as David's), Entry 63, Entry Date 8 Feb 1780, same book and page as David's, but Drury's 50 acres are "North side of Clinch River". So, it appears there was a connection of some sort between Drury Holt and David Holt. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Nathaniel and Abigail Holt had a son Drury in Dec. 1759 in Albemarle Parish, Sussex County, VA. Documented. Assuming Nataniel and Abigail are my Drury Holt's parents. The time frame fits, Abigail had a brother Drury Clanton, so that fits. Abigail Clanton Holt does connect to the Randall Holt line from Hogg Island and Williamsburg, VA through her grandmother Mary Seward Holt who married Wm. Clanton. For more than 10 years, I thought Nathaniel and Abigail were probably cousins, both going back to Randall Holt. (It all seemed to fit, but I couldn't document Nathaniel's parents.) Well...DNA changed that! DNA shows the Drury Holt's line going back to Robert Holt, born about 1605. Either Nathaniel was from the Robert Holt line, OR he wasn't Drury's father. I've been searching for Nathaniel's father for some time now without success. My best "guess" is: Robert Holt Richard Holt William Holt, born abt 1684,died about 1734 (Wm. Holt, brother of Plunkett & Richard Jr.) Thomas or John Holt born about 1705 Hoping to find a "cousin" who's line goes back through Wm Holt to compare notes. Do you have any information on William Holt (above) and his family? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. After a quick look at these Holts using the info you have given, it does look like you're on the right track (too many indications to be coincidental, like J.T.'s (likely) father George dying in the same OK county where J.T. was married, George having a brother named Jonathan, and J.T.'s wife being born in Cherokee Co., GA too). I'd like to help if I could, since running into some of those Holt brick walls myself and not yet finding the answers. You're really just missing two census records showing J.T., and you of course know that sometimes a person simply wasn't enumerated. Once, my great grandparents were enumerated twice because they were visiting my grandparents and listed in their household, and either before or after that, were counted in their own home. And you also know that "Holt" was spelled incorrectly over and over in census records, either by the census taker, or sometimes I find, by Ancestry. How sure are you that J.T.'s likely father (George) was married to both a Nancy Jane and a Katherine? I saw Geo. A. and Catherine in the 1880 Cherokee Co., GA census records, with niece and nephew Martha and Wilson, and son James (born abt. 1874). Do you know if J.T. had a brother James? Or do you think it's possible an informant (perhaps a neighbor if Geo. and family weren't at home) gave an incorrect name and birth year and "James" was actually J.T.? You might look for a James Holt this age in the 1900 census records. If George A. was married to Nancy Jane (?) before he married Catherine (?), Nancy Jane may have died and George had to allow relatives to care for J.T. after his birth. If you know or could find out Nancy Jane's maiden name, you might find J.T. living with some of her relatives in the 1880 census records. This is probably too obvious to bring up, but do you have a copy of J.T.'s death certificate? See how simple the solution is!?!! Hopefully, a perspective different from yours will give you another direction to take in looking for your J.T.
