for Christine.......I too am a descendant of the Holt/Short families. I was wondering if you think his name was not Holt, what do you think it was, why was he hiding, and what clues are you looking for in the Short family and why the Short family? Im anxious to find out what you feel/know on this. My line goes to Oliver Holt and his son William and his wife (Mary Martin ) and from their daughter Judith Holt. Regards, Linzey Whitehill Carlson

I am a direct descendant of James and Hannah (Allen) Holt and I was quite disappointed with the book, especially given how it's been promoted and marketed. I was so disturbed by the number of inaccuracies and distortions I was going to personally contact the author and publisher. I would normally forgive the distorttion in historical ficiton - except the promotion of the book so touts the author's personal connection and all the research she did. Separately, I'm very interested in having my brother's DNA added to the file and/or my paternal uncles, still living. I think I will reach out to Ed earlier on this thread. I have extensive and complete documentation of our paternal, as well as maternal lines. I would love to help solve the mystery of Nicholas Holt. I am beginning to believe: a. he was not from Romsey b. his occupation was not "tanner/turner" as listed on the ships' roll. he clearly participated in other ways in both Newbury (he was an original proprietor there as well as Andover). c. I don't think he had an Andover ENg. connection - that was the minister they took with them initially to found the town - Woodbridge. d. I'm not sure his name was really Holt. e. Net- net I think he was hiding/escaping. They were politically charged times and I think he had reasons to obscure his identity. Ultimately, I think clues may be found from research Henry Short and family. (Nicholas' wife Elizabeth's family). Hi, After seeing the posting of William Harrison Holt, I'm wondering if he is related to another of the same name who built my house in 1884. You can see his son Pliny's biography on my website http://www.holthouse.org/Holtfamily.html and more on the genealogy pages. I've been looking for a family portrait for some time. Hope there's a connection! Mary Gillespie
Greetings, Jo Anne and Dee, I enjoyed your comments about my web site and your associations with Pearl Harbor. Pearl Harbor changed many of our lives. We didn't have electricity or a radio so a neighbor who did came down to tell us about the attack. I was 12 years old and I can still picture us standing out by their car talking about the attack. My oldest brother, Charles Harold Holt, had somebody bring him 9 miles from college so he could tell us, too. I am proud to be a Holt -- named after my Uncle Lewis Henry Holt. > Thanks for sharing your story....my cousin, Bill Ballard, was serving in Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked our ships....his ship was destroyed....and he perished! He was about to come home....I was born in 1941, and have a letter he wrote my parents, that he would be home, to see me, soon!...He was my father's oldest sister's, oldest son....My parents mourned his death until they both died in the '60s and '90s....I can't remember what the ship was named, but will try to find it....enjoyed reading your story! Lew, I wish to express my sympathy on the loss of your brother. How sad that you and your family didn't get to see him again once he entered the war. Did he serve on the ship, Oklahoma? I seem to remember there was a Holt among those who served on that ship. I will have to recheck the Altus, Oklahoma site to make sure. "Brothers of War" reminds me of the poem "There Will Be No War On The Other Side" written by a lady in England after WW1 and published in a book written about that war by an Englishman. The poem is about a Franchman and a German who lie dying on the battlefield and they confort each other by offering the last drops of water from a water bottle and make pormises to each other that there will be no war on the other side of death. Very sad poem, but beautiful, too. All the best to you. Greetings, This is the first time that I have posted on the Holt list. I enjoy reading it. I want to take this opportunity to write that on June 16, 1941, we dropped my brother Bill Holt off, waved good by to him and that was the last time that we saw him a live. He was at Pearl Harbor during the attack by the Japanese on Dec. 7th. In the Coral Sea 1943 he became ill with tuberculosis, was transferred to Australia, then to California and eventually to Walla Walla, WA where he died in 1945. This ship, the USS Phoenix was sold to Argentina in 1951 and was sunk by the British in 1982 during the Falkland Island War. I have become good friends with a man who was on the Phoenix/Belgrano when it was sunk. I have become acquainted with a British veteran who was on the submarine that sank the Belgrano. And then five years ago I went to Japan to meet two aviators who participated in the attack on Pearl Harbor. All these men, one way or another, have become "Brothers of War" which is the title of a book I have recently published. The British veteran went to Argentina to spend eight days with the Argentine veteran. When I went to Japan I shook hands with the two Japanese veterans of the Pearl Harbor attack. We all are truly "Brothers of War." If you want to know more, please check out LewHolt.com Thank you. My father was a "black market baby", and we believe that his father, Walter Holt, knew nothing of his existance. The Walter I am looking for spent time here in Enid Oklahoma back in the early 1940's. My father's mother's name is Mildred Crow. As far as I know, she was not married to him, and yet they had a child. She kept my dad, after they parted, for 2 years. At the age of 2, he was given up for adoption. Years later, when my dad finally met his real mother, she gave him a photo of his real father, and he and his father look exactly alike. He appears to be of Indian descent. >From what we've been able to find out thus far, Walter was a house painter back in the 40's in Enid, Oklahoma. I have searched everywhere for this man, and I have found names that match, but no other information, as I cannot afford all the fees. My father only wishes to speak to his father...just talk to someone who is a real parent of his. He's been a wandering soul all his life, because the people that adopted him didn't really want a child. He doesn't know anything about where he comes from...he is 62 now. He just wants some kind of...I guess closure...to his past. Can anyone helpme with this? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
