There is a Holt family plot in Macons Rose Hill Cemetery with a Pulaski Holt buried there and I believe an Anna also. I will have to check for sure. There must have been an illness in the family, as some of the dates are only days apart for date of death. I will look soon to see if there is a Cicero in the Area. The Holt family have extended family and others in a nearby plot. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Jane Holt's son David by Thomas Whiteside went by the surname "Whiteside." He can be found in the 1860 Grainger Co. census records--long after the David T. Holt who married Polly Walker had left for Benton Co. If you have a male Holt relative, you might consider participating in DNA testing. My line of Holts and several other Holt lines who were in TN have done DNA tests. It could give you the answer to which line you belong. I've researched the Holts in Grainger County but never figured out myself what line was David T. Holt's. In the 1850 census records, he appears to live closer to another line of Holts than to mine. Those Holts are later in Hamblen County (1880 census), which was formed partially from Grainger County. I would assume that they didn't move to Hamblen County but likely were living in the part of Grainger County that became Hamlen. Other researchers of the David T. Holt line have been trying for many years to figure out his ancestry but to my knowledge, haven't been successful. Good luck! ----- Original Message ----- From: <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> To: <HOLT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 04, 2009 3:19 PM Subject: Re: [HOLT] Holts in Grainger Co.,TN, Benton Co.,AR > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: johnholt158 > Surnames: > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.holt/2181.1.1.1/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > No actual proof, but I believe that the David T Holtwho married Polly > Walker was the son of Jane Holt (daughter of David). Greetings Lew Holt, I enjoyed the story and you got my attention when you gave the location. I have been researching my Holt family and the earliest local that I have for them is Jasper county, Illinois which is just north of your Edwards county. My ancestor was Joseph Marion Holt, b.1835 Indiana. This info from census. I do find him in Jasper county marrying Tabitha Choate in 1855. They had three sons before they left the area, William, John Riley and Louis Newton Holt. I have been unable to find Joseph Marion's parents. Be glad to compare family info. and have a few civil war stories for Tabitha's 3 Union soldier brothers. Thanks for your time. Ben Moore **************A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. This has no application but is a Holt story. I'll copy a paragraph or two that I wrote to my kids the other evening: I received a long letter from David telling about his Aunt Emma -- I had mentioned mine in my letter last evening. David wrote, ". . . her own little jar of snuff." My Aunt Emma smoked a pipe. I can remember her on the front porch smoking -- going back 75 years ago. Then Uncle Arlie writes: And Aunt Emma who was our great aunt - Grandma Holt's sister-in-law. When I was visiting the Holt center of Albion, Illinois one time, our distant cousin there took me over to Grandma Holt's village of Ellery. As we were looking and talking my hostess pointed and said that was the old Cullison place over there -- confirming that the McDaniels and Cullisons were neighbors. But most interesting was the fact that when we were little we would visit Aunt Emma in the little cottage she eventually lived in on the Nehalem and she would tell us kids Civil War stories. One she told was that the Union Army soldiers there were just as bad foraging as any Confederates and they used to steal their cattle. So the Cullisons used to hide their cattle along a certain creek when the Union foragers came through. I was thrilled to be able to go and walk along that creek myself lo these over hundred years later. Just a story. HM I believe is his Majesty. John Holt was Maj Randall Holt Jr.'s son who died a year after the decree according to a note I found from one of the Holt listers who stated he was a suicide. Rolling houses acording to what I have found are the tabacco warehouses. Yes, I thought this was an interesting bit of history on early Surry Holts and related families. Helene
