    1. [HOLT] John Holt
    2. Does anyone have any information on John Holt b. about 1775/80.  May have been PA or VA.  He was married to Elizabeth Conner abt 1800.  She was the daughter of James Conner.  They moved to Coshocton Co., OH between 1812 and 1818.  He died there in 1846.  Elizabeth and John's children John, Isaac, Margaret, Abigail, Stephen and Mary.  There was a couple more that I do not have names for at present. 2. MaryAnn
    3. I'm hoping to locate someone who descends from the Holt family of McCameron Township, Martin County, Indiana as enumerated in the US Census: 1840 - 1870. This is my first attempt to research my great grandmother's family. Susan Holt, b 01 February 1847 married Israel Jackson Hewitt also born in Indiana. They moved on to Kansas and later to Oklahoma. Any connection? I'd like to hear from you. Thanks, Mary Ann - mamsb@hughes.net

    1. [HOLT] Bedford Va County HOLTS
    2. Bob John Holt, John Rice HOLT, and Saunders were very prominent men in early Bedford County Va Civil and Military duties. The town of Liberty is now Bedford City, Bedford County  had a Mt Pass (now Roanoke County) funneling people West, and South into Carolina's. The Bedford Va HOLT family lived just about a mile of County line of Campbell, on Rocky Mt Turnpike. It hard to imagine now but this part of Va was frontier then. My HOLT'S were in Northern Ala early 1800s (Samuel HOLT 1800-1843), John E Holt's son said father born in SC on a Census.  Bob, I would certainly think these Northern Ala HOLT'S were kin to Bedford County of Va and my Samuel HOLT. I don't want to start another "War" on German/English HOLTS, but Bedford County was mostly Scotch/Irish people. This caused problems as Scotch were moneyed Tories loyal to King of England. Irish were extremely Revolutionary as they didn't have much to lose. I had kin on both sides, only one was a Tory.  Bedford County had Revolutionary War Soldiers in the Carolina's. Those old Virginian Soldier boys probably met their sweeties, cheaper land and  warmer weather could been reasons why they moved. Below are some Bedford County Va HOLT marriages. Gerald Preas Oct. 18, 1784; Joseph Holt & Susannah Saunders, dt Elizabeth; Benjamin Rice, Surety. Dec. 28, 1785; William Holt & Lucy Saunders, dt Elizabeth; David Saunders, Surety. Mar. 7, 1791; Samuel Holt & Elizabeth P. Price, dt Robt.; Robert Wilson, Surety. Jun. 16, 1794; David Rice & Jane Holt, dt Betty; Mary Rice, Surety; Married by James Mitchell, June 18, 1794. Sep. 25, 1799; Stockley Turner & Patsey Holt, dt Lucy; Joseph Holt, Surety. Dec. 21, 1801; Abraham Jenkins & Peggy Holt, dt Maria; Samuel Holt, Surety. Jul. 2, 1804; Thomas Edgar & Elizabeth P. 3. Helene, good to hear from you. I thought that subject line might get your attention. David Eldred Holt's book "A Mississippi Rebel in the Army of Northern Virginia" (one of the best descriptions of the Civil War battles and hardships of the soldiers I have read) follows him into Virginia where he meets some of his relatives. "Cousins" mostly. He first meets Dr. Alfred Charles Holt, Surgeon General of the Mississippi troops in Virginia. They were both from Woodville, Mississippi. David Eldred was a son of Dr. David Rice Holt and Juliet White. Dr. Holt was a son of John Saunders Holt and Harriet Nightingale O'Toole. He was a son of William Holt and Lucy Saunders. David was in Co. K of the 16th Miss. He enlisted with his uncle, James William Holt, brother of Dr. Charles Alfred. When they get to Lynchburg, a Hotel clerk asks him if he is kin to the Holts of Bedford Co. He says Senator John Holt is his Uncle and has a Plantation. He is told the Holts own the hotel property and his cousin Jim lives 2 blocks down. Jim's wife is Betty and their little girl is Milly. He has a brother in law named Scruggs. He also has a sister named Sallie, widow of John Reese. He meets old James Saunders, a cousin to his grandmother, Lucy. Old Jim's wife was Ann. they had a daughter who married a Surgeon. He goes to Liberty, Virginia and meets David Holt, son of Sen. John Holt. This David has a sister Ann who married John Gill and they lived on a plantation named "Wolf Hill". David Eldred goes to church and meets Lizzy Holt, a cousin and an old lady, cousin Martha Campbell. David, son of Sen. John later married Sally Booth. When asked why he isn't in the war, David replies he's running the farm and says brother Joe is a major at the front and William, John and Jim are too old and have their families. These Bedford people MIGHT be Samuel P. Holt's people but I don't have a lot on him. They might also be Major Joseph Holt's bunch or Rev. John White Holt's family. Any ideas? Using DNA I have connected to John Holt who appears in Granville Co. NC on Tax rolls as early as 1764 with Charles living nearby in the NC 1786 census. Here I am stymied since I can't locate John earlier than Charles' birth in VA. I am beginning to think that this John Holt is my immigrant ancestor from the UK. I had hoped to get around to going to cemeteries etc... but didn't get around to it. Ironically I have no children... got into the genealogy thing because my parents misplaced their files.... so in recreating the info... I got hooked. I have interviewed my parents to get their stories... it is a good thing you have been proactive in recording your info. I wish my husband had done the same with his family. Mimi has finally taken it over and I am just standing by in case she runs into a problem. I also haven't worked on my own genealogical research in ages. I just got through writing a 65 page autobiography for my kids and grandkids. I based it on the "42" different addresses that I have had in my 79 years trying to let my descendants know what my lifetime has been like. In May my present wife and I drove through the Midwest gathering pictures up there of the many towns, houses, and schools I lived in, and attended as well as the churches that my dad served. This was her first trip into that area. We drove 4,000 miles in the last 2 weeks of May and first week of June. Ed Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
