In Knox Co., KY on tax list for 1806 is a Doswell Holt. 1807 is Doswell, Drury, & John Holt. 1809 is Drury, Henry, & Doswell Holt. No futher Holts. In 1819 Whitley Co., KY was formed from Knox Co., KY. On 1810 census for Knox Co., Ky is Drury Holt--- 1 male under 10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 45/up, 2 females 10-15, 1 female 25-44, & 1 female slave. Also is Doswell ---1 male 16-24, 1 female under 10, & 1 female 16-24. So I'm guessing the Drury in Knox Co. is the same one that died in Whitley Co., KY? Along with sons Doswell & Henry? I have seen many reports at rootsweb of Drury Holt born 1759? , 1769?, & other dates. Born in VA? Born in TN? Father Nathaniel? Died Whitley Co.? Died McCraken Co.? But they all...married Elizabeth Rogers. My interest is.... I descend from an Orpha Holt and I'm looking for her family. I have little on her. She married a James Miracle Sr. (b.1792). Orpha was born about 1792 (possible NC?). James and Orpha had the following children: M i William J. MIRACLE M ii John MIRACLE M iii Elisha MIRACLE M iv Ambrose MIRACLE M v Abraham MIRACLE F vi Anne MIRACLE M vii James Crow MIRACLE M viii Frederick MIRACLE James & Orpha Miracle lived in Harlan Co., KY (formed from Knox Co. in 1819). First son William was there born in 1816. It has been my thinking that Orpha & her Holt family were from that area. Fellas usually marry home town gals, pretty hard to court otherwise. James Miracle & his family came to this area about that time from Lee Co., VA.(1810 census in Lee Co.). I'm thinking it is possible that Orpha is a daughter of Drury Holt? The other possible father is John Holt. I did see in a report that Nathaniel Holt had a son Drury & a son John. If anyone has anything that could help me in my quest...it would be deeply appreciated! Thank you for any light you can shed. Dusty Pilgrim

His wife is Martha and there where other people living with them with different last names. There were 7 listed in Tennessee but for some reason there were no images. One was in Gibson County, one in Giles County, two in Grainger County, one in Hamilton County, one in Montgomery County and one in Shelby County. Sorry I couldn't get those images. Lindsay

I have never found the name Cullus anywhere except for Cullus Holt. I have no idea where it came from. None of the other children had unusual names. His mother was a Cherokee Indian and it could have come from her although it doesn't sound like it. Since the last name came from the male side, sometimes children were given the mother's family name for a given name, but that does not seem to be the case here. It is possible that it is an error in reading records, but I don't think so.

I am a little confused by your relationships. There seems to be a generation missing or mistated unless I am mistaken. I only have descendants for one of her children, John. According to my information, he had 5 children, 4 girls and one boy and none of the girls married a Garwood. The girls were Roma, Joy, Mary and June and the boy was J. D. I have the ancestral Holt line back from Queen and William Taylor Holt to William, to Stephen, to Nathaniel, and John, and several lines of descendants. My line comes from that Stephen's son Stephen. Let me know if I can be of any further help.

Cheryl, last year you sent me a GEDCOM file that had James Buchanan Holt's grandfather a William Holt, related to me. Now this shows his grandfather was a John Holt that I am not sure is related to me. Any clarification by you or others would be appreciated. Richard Holt Gates (gatesrh@aol.com)

I ran across this transcribed and typed document held by the East Tennessee Historical Society archives, and thought I would share it ~ hope that it is new information for someone, and helps them in their quest: Copy of the Original Affidavit of J.B. Holt, J.W. Drummond - Lawyer State of Tennessee } Knox County } AFFIDAVIT of James Buchanan Holt The said affiant being first duly sworn deposes and says: My name is James Buchanan Holt, but I am usually known as James Holt. I was born near Buchanan's Bridge in Pittsylvania County, in the State of Virginia, United States of America, on the 19th day of July, in the year 1798, and will be one hundred and one (101) years old on the 19th day of next July, being the 19th day of July, 1899. My father was Nathaniel Holt and he married Lucinda Carter, of Pittsylvania County, or Culpepper County, or Botetourt County, Virginia, and she was my mother. My father died in Jackson County, Kentucky, some time since the Civil War began in 1861, aged about one hundred years. My father's father was John Holt, who came from England to Virginia at an early day, and he was the son of a noted man in England, who was said to be very wealthy. My grandfather, John Holt, bought a farm of 400 acres in Rockingham County, North Carolina, and shortly before his death, received the money from England to pay for this farm. His wife was a Miss Cagely. She survived him many years, and my Gutherie family lived with her. My grandfather, John Holt, was about fifty years old and his wife about twenty years old when they married. My father, Nathaniel Holt, went into the United States Army in the War of 1812, while he was living with my grandmother on the 400 acre farm in Rockingham County, North Carolina, and my grandmother died while he was in the army. I was about fourteen years old, and went with my father to Charleston, South Carolina, where his command then was. My grandfather, John Holt, had children as follows: Edward, John, James, Isaac, Betsy (who married a man names Amos), Polly (who married Isham Sharpe and went to Kentucky), Celia (who married a man named O'Dell and lived and died in Virginia), Ann (who married a man named Carter, and lived and died in Virginia), and Nathaniel (who was my father). My recollection is that my father, Nathaniel Holt, was the youngest of my grandfather's children. I do not know when my grandfather, John Holt, died and do not remember that I ever saw him, but I knew his wife and remember her well. My father was born and reared in Virginia - probably in Pittsylvania County - and married Lucinda Carter (my mother). He had three children born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, as follows: Nancy (who married a man named Spivey), William and James Buchanan (myself). Another child, Ann (who then moved to Henry County, Virginia, and married Rueben Keith) was born in Henry County. My father then moved to Rockingham County, North Carolina, just over the line and across the river and had five more children born at that place, to wit: Ruth, Eliza, Stephen, Nathaniel and Peggy. Ruth married Halcomb, Eliza married Hampton; Stephen married Ramsey and died in North Carolina; Peggy married a Sawyers and now lives in North Carolina. It has been the understanding in our family ever since I can recollect, that my grandfather, John Holt, was the son of a noted man in England and that a large fortune in England belonged to us and that we would get it at the proper time. And further affiant saith not. The foregoing affidavit was subscribed and sworn to by James Buchanan Holt, with whom I am personally acquainted, before me. A Notary Public in and for Knox County, Tennessee, duly commissioned and qualified, and I certify that my commission is dated _____ and expires _____. Witness my hand and official seal at office in Knoxville, Tennessee, this the 6th day of February, 1899.

Does anyone know if it is possible to trace land records (deeds or whatever they are called) if it is shown on the 1910 census that a person owns the land?? LaVon
Yes you can if you go to the Land Record Office. Not sure of costs. Free if you don't need the copies I believe. They are public records. I live in Kentucky and know where Hillsboro is located. I didn't take time to look for Marshall. Nathan Holt and his family were in Kentucky in the early 1800s and eventually migrated North to the Scioto region of Ohio. There is much information about Nathan and his descendants on Ancestry.com and Rootsweb.com. While all info on the internet is not correct perhaps you will find information which will help you get started. ----- Original Message ----- From: <ohio-native@home.com> To: <HOLT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 13, 2002 10:55 PM Subject: [HOLT-L] Holt's from Ohio > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Eej.2ACIB/2078 > > Message Board Post: > > I am looking for any information on Holt's that lived in southern Ohio around Hillsboro or Marshall.
