Thy seythe (sic) and glass of time are not the emblem of the gentle power. The sands run fitfully and swiftly through thy glass. Thy reaping its harvest of death. It claims alike its victims, the young, the old, grave and gay, the exalted and the humble. In its relentless demands it recently invaded the home of J.W. Holt of this city and laid claim to his aged father, James Buchanan Holt, age 101 years and six months. He was born near Buchanan's Bridge, Penn. (sic), on the nineteenth day of July 1792. His father, Nathaniel Holt, died in Jackson County, Kentucky at the close of the late war between the North and the South, age 100 years. The deceased James B. Holt was a great grandson of Lord Chief Justice Holt of London, England, and was the last male descendent of the third generation of this Jurist. James B. Holt was one of the pioneers of Tenn. He was a man possessing many fine qualities, bravery and faithfulness. He treasured no wrong. He loved his people and his beautiful mountain home. Up to within a few says of his death, his mind was perfectly clear and he discussed the probabilities of recovering his portion of the two million dollars left by Chief Justice Holt. He was simple in manner and approachable at all times. He kept in close touch with all his friends and neighbors. He could be depended on for references to dates and family records. He was the leading spirit in the effort being made by the Holt heirs to recover the vast amount of money and property that is believed will be received by them of whom there are many: Mrs. J. Sawyers, Mrs. Lucinda Carter, Mrs. W.S. Brown, all of North Carolina. Mr. J.W. Holt of this city, Mrs. Murdock, wife of Dr. Murdock of St. Louis, MO., Mrs. Hilliard of Port Conway, Va., Mrs. Rhoda Waters, wife of Dr. Waters of Knox County, and S.A. Holt of Indian Territory.
Danny, you didn't tell ujs where you were born, or where your grandparents and father were born. It would help us to help you if you can tell us your grandmother's maiden name as well. Tell us more. There are lots of Michael Holts. >From a friend. A lot of Holt material! Subject: Re: Virginia Censuses for 1790 and 1800 After a cursory glance, that Binns project is going to be dynamite for us. They have not yet gotten to Lunenburg (we're not sure we're there anyway) and Mecklenburg but they sure have nailed the rest: Charles City, Prince George, Isle of Wight, Amelia, Brunswick, etc. They have a ton of hits listed on that site so obviously a lot of people appreciate the work they are doing and I am certainly one of them. The gist of your e-mail sort of implied that you knew them and if so please tell them they have rung the bell for yet another family. (http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~ysbinns/vataxlists/index.htm)
This is not my lineage. Reply to the Roots-L list. Helene Subject: [ROOTS-L] Olsen Holt - Wisconsin/Canada Two uncles of my father emigrates to Wisconsin and later Canada. Both was borned in Hvarnes parish - Hedrum municipality - Norway. Ole Johan Olsen Holt ( b. 1883 ) left Christiania (Oslo) 21.11.1902 with S/S Montebello. He stated Wisconsin as his final destination. Nils Bernhard Olsen Holt ( b. 02.11.80) left Christiania 26.02.1904, also with S/S Montebello and with Wisconsin as his final destination. Nils Bernhard returned from the US a few years later and 06.04.1907 he are ready for a new journey with S/S Montebello, this time to Canada ( he stated his place of residence is America).. I´ve not manage to find them so far in the Ellis Island database, or any other online sources I´ve found. The only thing I know from my father is that Nils Berhanrd died young in some kind of accident. My father says he remember very well the letters from Ole Johan saying that he will try to visit his native district in the near future, but that never happend. I guess mostly due to lack of money and sickness.. Ole Johan died sometimes in 1950s. He was a bachelor all his life ( so they said..) and he lived on nursing home the last years. His small farm was sold and they received a small box with his personal belongings in Norway. My father is convinced that he lived in Canada most of this years abroad. Maybe he already had moved to Canada when Nils Bernhard arrived in 1907..? S/S Montebello brought them to Hull in all three cases, but that is where my searching have stopped.. Any help will be highly appreciated Viggo Holt Oslo
Sorry I didn't change the subject line. Helene Copy of the Original Affidavit of J.B. Holt, J.W. Drummond - Lawyer State of Tennessee } Knox County } AFFIDAVIT of James Buchanan Holt The said affiant being first duly sworn deposes and says: My name is James Buchanan Holt, but I am usually known as James Holt. I was born near Buchanan's Bridge in Pittsylvania County, in the State of Virginia, United States of America, on the 19th day of July, in the year 1798, and will be one hundred and one (101) years old on the 19th day of next July, being the 19th day of July, 1899. My father was Nathaniel Holt and he married Lucinda Carter, of Pittsylvania County, or Culpepper County, or Botetourt County, Virginia, and she was my mother. My father died in Jackson County, Kentucky, some time since the Civil War began in 1861, aged about one hundred years. My father's father was John Holt, who came from England to Virginia at an early day, and he was the son of a noted man in England, who was said to be very wealthy. My grandfather, John Holt, bought a farm of 400 acres in Rockingham County, North Carolina, and shortly before his death, received the money from England to pay for this farm. His wife was a Miss Cagely. She survived him many years, and my Gutherie family lived with her. My grandfather, John Holt, was about fifty years old and his wife about twenty years old when they married. My father, Nathaniel Holt, went into the United States Army in the War of 1812, while he was living with my grandmother on the 400 acre farm in Rockingham County, North Carolina, and my grandmother died while he was in the army. I was about fourteen years old, and went with my father to Charleston, South Carolina, where his command then was. My grandfather, John Holt, had children as follows: Edward, John, James, Isaac, Betsy (who married a man names Amos), Polly (who married Isham Sharpe and went to Kentucky), Celia (who married a man named O'Dell and lived and died in Virginia), Ann (who married a man named Carter, and lived and died in Virginia), and Nathaniel (who was my father). My recollection is that my father, Nathaniel Holt, was the youngest of my grandfather's children. I do not know when my grandfather, John Holt, died and do not remember that I ever saw him, but I knew his wife and remember her well. My father was born and reared in Virginia - probably in Pittsylvania County - and married Lucinda Carter (my mother). He had three children born in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, as follows: Nancy (who married a man named Spivey), William and James Buchanan (myself). Another child, Ann (who then moved to Henry County, Virginia, and married Rueben Keith) was born in Henry County. My father then moved to Rockingham County, North Carolina, just over the line and across the river and had five more children born at that place, to wit: Ruth, Eliza, Stephen, Nathaniel and Peggy. Ruth married Halcomb, Eliza married Hampton; Stephen married Ramsey and died in North Carolina; Peggy married a Sawyers and now lives in North Carolina. It has been the understanding in our family ever since I can recollect, that my grandfather, John Holt, was the son of a noted man in England and that a large fortune in England belonged to us and that we would get it at the proper time. And further affiant saith not. The foregoing affidavit was subscribed and sworn to by James Buchanan Holt, with whom I am personally acquainted, before me. A Notary Public in and for Knox County, Tennessee, duly commissioned and qualified, and I certify that my commission is dated _____ and expires _____. Witness my hand and official seal at office in Knoxville, Tennessee, this the 6th day of February, 1899.
