    3. To the best of my knowledge, I am not related to this line of Holt's but, I am an American history buff and know something about this area of Pa. The Lewistown area was still a wilderness area in the mid to late 1700's. There were many toll ferries and bridges in that area that were named for the families who owned them. Once the are started becoming more settled after the Revoultionary War, and the state started buying and confiscating land for road rightaways, these ferries and bridges were forgotten about. It is very possibly that there was a Buchanan's Bridge in the area, especially since Mott states Dorcas' second husbands name was Buchanan. ----- Original Message ----- From: <KAILUAHOLT@aol.com> To: <HOLT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, March 23, 2002 5:18 PM Subject: [HOLT-L] James Buchanan Holt > Fran, > The Cheif Justice (according to my info) had no children. 2. Best of luck in your search. None of the names you mentioned are familiar to me. I am certainly not the definitive authority on any line of the Holt family but what little I have is fairly well documented and duplicated by other researchers. Mott

    1. Re: [HOLT-L] James Buchanan Holt
    2. Mott, I just read all your information on James Buchanan Holt which don't think or know if fits into my Holt line. I have tried for so long to find my Holt line that I write emails, letters, looking for that small light of hope. I am looking for WM. Martin Holt that was told born 1844 Marshal Co., MS, married Araminta Jane Pounds born 1-1847 Marshal co, Ms. I can trace her line back to England plus from birth until 1900 living with daughter--Addie in Perry co, CHilton. She was living in the 1880 Perry co census with brother (Pounds) and some records show widow but nothing about 11 yr old daughter Addie, 8 yr old son WM Martin Jr. Wm Martin Jr, born 1872 married Nancy Everline Gandy before 1899 when Uncle Willie was born. They came to Bowie Co., TX in 1901 and this is where I come in. I would so appreciate it that if you come across these names that you might would help me. I know everyone has the same desire, drive, addiction to it like I do. I have read so many emails, etc., that I know other Holt's family more than do mine. I have at least ruled out who isn't so guess that is start. Thank you for listening to my rambling but when someone mentions Martin Holt---in any form---I get started. Whether I find them or not, I know I was blessed with the Holts I was raised around, by. Nell Holt Reynolds

    1. [HOLT-L] James Buchanan Holt
    2. Fran, The Cheif Justice (according to my info) had no children. His brother Rowland had 4 sons and one daughter. Rowland inherited the forune and estate of John. The eldest two sons, John andThomas, had no children. The third son, Rowland, had two sons,Rowland and Thomas, neither of which produced a male heir and the Holt "fortune" and real estate for the most part passed to the Wilson family through Lucinda Holt who married Thomas Wilson. In 1901 a representative of the Holt's, Thomas Holt Murray, visited Redgrave and obtained first hand most of the info I am relating here. My records indicate that my line is descended from Henry Holt the fourth Son of Rowland, the brother of Chief Justice John Holt. Henry had left England prior to the deaths of his older brothers and was alive only a few years after his arrival so I assume he was never aware that he probably would have been the heir to a substantial estate. Henry married Dorcas Armstrong in Deleware. They established a trading post near Ft Granville in PA. They had three sons, John, Henry, and Thomas. Thomas had a son named James born near Lewistown, PA. I don't know what his middle name was but it could have been Buchanan because After Henry's death Dorcas married Arthur Buchanan, an indian trader who had been an officer under George Washington in the Indian Wars. This James would have been a great-grandson of Rowland, he married Mary Bratton. I don't know where they got to but I know his fater's name wasn't Nathaniel. Based on the birthdate of his brother John, from whom I descend, his birthdate would be a few yaears one way or the other of 1758. James had a brother John who had a son named James, middle name unknow, who was born in central PA in 1788. When Thomas Holt Murray was preparing for his trip to England he encountered some descendents (Wilsons I presume) who were less than warm to his coming. Apparently they had been contacted over the years by representatives or actual Holts who has asked that they be provided with transportation back to England to investigate the possibility of being entitled to some portion of the estate. He went and was given access to a great deal of church and census records from which much of my information comes. This James Buchanan Holt doesn't seem to fit in with my data. None of the names at the bottom of the obituary are familiar to me. The middle name of Buchanan seems to be coincidental. Just as many families named Washington claim to be related to George Washington most aren't. I have tried very hard but in my research I have never encountered "Buchanan's Bridge". If someone could discover such a thing near the Lewistown, PA area it might be more substantial evidence. Always glad to share what I have on the Holt's of my line and always looking for more. Mott Holt

    3. This James Buchanan Holt may connect in some manner with the Holts who were in the Bedford County, TN area. For a number of years, there was a misconception that the Bedford County Holts were of English origin and descended from the Chief Justice. I believe that there was a book published within the past 30 years that passed the same story along. Nevertheless, professional genealogical researchers have produced irrefutable evidence that these Holts were of German origin and descended from the Michael Holt (Hans Michael Hold) who arrived at what became known as the Second Germanna Colony in VA in 1717. You might find more information in the Holt list archives. 3. Is there anyone out there that might be researching the HOLTs of Greenfield NH? I am searching for the parents of an AMY HOLT born about 1775-1785 in Greenfield NH, m to Isaac Kent of Alstead NH. In the cemetery there are headstones, that fit the time period, for a Peter, Stephen, Joshua and an Israel but I have no other information on any of the above people. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Linda
