The link (and address) to the information and order information for the HOLT book was included in my earlier post -- Date: Sat, 1 Jun 2002 10:16:04 EDT. Just scroll down the list when you get to that site until you find the one by Marshall. However, this one isn't for the New England HOLTs, but for the VA > NC HOLTs. There are others at that site, though, so maybe one of them has yours. --Wilene << Date: Sat, 1 Jun 2002 14:40:45 EDT From: Twhrose@aol.com To: HOLT-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [HOLT-L] HOLT-D Digest V02 #137 Hi, I am a descendent of John Marshall Holt, son of Joseph Holt, son of Joseph Holt, son of Joseph Holt, son of Joseph Holt, son of Timothy, son of James, son of Nicholas Holt. Thanks, Robert. I plan to order a photocopy of that book next week from Quintin Publications, Quintin Publications | Family Genealogies Letter H http://www.quintinpublications.com/familygenealogies_hoa.html Apparently the only "proof" of the connection is in the estate papers of Nicholas HOLT II where his dau. Polly is identified as the wife of Henry COBLE, and that they were living in Tennessee at the time. Later research by others appears to indicate that Nicholas had a first wife, Nancy (unknown), the mother of Solomon, William, Nicholas, Alexander, Jacob, Elizabeth, Amelia (or Minty), Mary "Polly," and Sarah, and his 2nd wife was Sarah ANDERSON, the mother of Catherine, David, Ruth, and Nancy. Unfortunately, many folks don't document the information in their files so I haven't a clue as to where this new information may have been found. At RootsWeb's WorldConnect Project, I found that Joe Holt <jholt43@comcast.net> has referenced the Marshall book quite extensively, and that has been a big help in sorting through all this, and his hours of work is greatly appreciated. I'll search out the additional marriage records you suggest as I've only accessed the NC marriage records at Ancestry.com at this point, and what is utterly fascinating is that most of the COBLE marriages in Orange Co., NC, 1807-1841, were witnessed by a Michael HOLT. --Wilene Date: Fri, 31 May 2002 12:11:17 -0500 From: "Robert Nicholson" <robertnicholson@cox-internet.com> To: HOLT-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [HOLT-L] HOLT + COBLE The book, THE DESCENDANTS OF MICHAEL HOLT, by Maudie Marie Holt Marshall, lists Mary (Polly) Holt as being the wife of Henry Coble. My sister and I have been doing research on the Holts. Benjamin Matthew Holt and Ida Mae Jackson were our grandparents. Their son, Clint Holt, was our father. The two children that died at birth were twin and their names were Chug and Chum. When Ben left Alabama he went to Lamar Co. Texas and on into Indian Territory, Oklahoma. Outside of Ardmore my father was born in 1900. Some of the children still live in that area and some moved in and around Durant. If you would like e-mail me I would appreciate very much. jb
In my previous e-mail -- For those of you who are not "into quilts," a brief history of the Alamance Factory established by Edwin M. Holt in 1837 is included in the book, Ellen Fickling Eanes, et al., North Carolina Quilts (Chapel Hill, NC: Univ. of NC Press, 1988), pp.12-13, and a quilt made by Elizabeth Ann Mebane, wife of Alfred Augustus Holt, oldest son of E.M. My husband apparently descends from HENRY COBLE (ca. 1764 NC - Apr. 19, 1860 MO) and his first wife, said to be MARY "Polly" HOLT, dau. of NICHOLAS HOLT and presumably wife NANCY. Others before me have made these connections, but I have not yet found "proof" that they are correct. Can anyone shed any light on how or why these connections came to be made? This hurdle is the key to my husband's possible descent from MICHAEL HOLT and ANNA ELISABETHA SCHEIBLE. HENRY COBLE's 2nd wife was Mrs. Kesiah Mitchell, md. Aug. 13, 1844, in Dade Co., MO, where they are enumerated in the 1850 census -- HENRY age 86, b. NC, and Kesiah age 56, b. TN. If HENRY's age was stated approx. correct in this census, he was b. ca. 1764. He is said to have been in Lincoln Co., TN, when his first wife died, and several of their offspring and descendants married and lived in Marshall Co., TN, where some stayed and others moved on to southern Missouri. This is what I have on Mary ?Vaughn. In the will of James Vaughan, Surry Co., VA, WB 8 p.161, 1731: To Mrs. Hannah Clinch a gold ring with letters "I.W.". To daughter-in-law, Lucy Moreland, a gold ring with letters, "T.V. E." To James Ransom. To Mrs. Mary Holt, widow of Capt. Thoas. Holt, deceased. To friend Mr. Wm. Seward. [ most of the will is illegible] Wit: John Glover and Arthur Taylor. Mary Vaughn? Holt enters the following agreement with her two sons by Thomas Holt. Surry Co., VA Deed Bk 5, p309. Henry Holt & James Holt agree to the division of a group of slaves which came to them from the Marriage Contract made on 20 Oct 1736 between Francis Price of Lawnes Creek Parish and Mary Holt, widow of Thomas Holt, Gent, late of the parish. Mary Holt Price agrees to name Henry Holt and James Holt as her heirs at her death. Wit: John Ruffin, John Newsum and Robert Ruffin. Recorded 18 Oct 1748. Signed by James and Henry Holt. I have not been able to find any will of Mary Holt Price. Thomas Holt was first married to Frances Mason. Frances Mason's grandparents were James and Mary Wade Mason of Merry Mount in Surry County, Virginia. James was born in England, came to Virginia and was a Burgess in 1654. He died about 1670. Her father was Francis Mason and he mentions her in his Will "daughter Frances Holt." Frances' brother, James Mason, mentions "Sister Holt" and "Niece Mary, daughter of Thomas Holt", in his will probated in Surry Co. in 1702. He also refers to his "brother" (actually half-brother) Thomas Binns, Jr., deceased. In 1701 Thomas and Frances Holt, "adminisrators of Thomas Binns, dec'd" receipted Ethelrd Taylor and Elizabeth his wife, adminstrators of James Mason, Duke Mason. Frances Holt died in 1713 and Thomas lived on for 17 more years, dying in 1730. (above from Charles Collier, "360 Years Later. Thomas Holt and Frances Mason Holt had sons Henry and James.
