    3. An archaic legal term. It was a form or land tax collected by a government. In Colonial America, the Crown, or the proprietors, levied a tax on land. It lists every household, by County, alphabetically, and the number of acres that they owned. It was used as the basis of taxation but also serves as a pretty good census.

    3. Hi List I have this ? to ask but first, I have asked this question for 2 years and each time I ask I get a reply from the same person and they tell me they have Holts in the area I am asking about. When I reply to them and ask for info this is where it stops. I try the e-mail address they give me. This is upsetting because no one else answers me thinking I got my anser so please could I have any one that has info answer me and also can I please not have an answer unless you are willing to tell me more. I am willing to share all I have. Ok this is what I am searching for. I have Holt's in Rivers John Nova Scotia from 1838-1901, before 1838 my peter holt was in amherst Nova scotia. I think his father was Mathew Holt but not sure. I believe that this Holt family came from u.s. about the 1776 time period so I am looking at the family being loyalist. So I am interested in Moses Holt , John, william, benjamin, and william johnson Holt. that came from new haven ct. help on this would be gr! eatly appreciated. Patty S. from Idaho

    3. Preston, they are at the Toanno annex , about 4 (?) miles out of town where they are stored in an industrial section of town for a few years until they can get the library finished. The large library at W & M is great and is on campus there at Williamsburg. Great selection of books and I found it much easier to use than the Library of Virginia at Richmond. You have to get a parking pass to park on campus from the museum which is just in front of the walk to the Library. If you go to Toano annex you can get a map of how to get there at the Public Library which also has a nice selection of books. Spent some time there as well. The annex has vertical files on the families of the area and they were where much of this last material came from. Very helpful there. Helene ----- Original Message ----- From: preston To: helenepockrus@earthlink.net Sent: Saturday, June 08, 2002 12:42 PM Subject: William Holt Helene, We have communicated before but I want to respond to your most recent posts regarding your access to some papers from the William & Mary College archives. My dead end is Barrett Holt who was born c. 1784 in Virginia. Dr. William Holt, David Holt and Barrett all were in Greene County, Tennessee at about 1800. Letters from some of Barrett's sons and grandsons say he was a brother or cousin to David and so would also be related to William. Family tradition has said that Barrett's father was a William. One scenario that we have always held open was the possibility of William having a marriage before his troth to Lucy Saunders. His first (?) wife could have died having child birth and William immediately remarried. Do any of the papers indicate that this could have been the case, especially with someone from a Barrett surname family. I get to Washington, DC periodically so will probably go to the W & M archives when I do. Is there any special way to find the records or are they filed alphabetically in the library. Preston Holt

    3. D. Saunders , Jr. In a letter from Lynch, September 26, 1828, postmarked in Richmond, VA. Addressed to John Saunders Holt, Augusta, Georgia. This D. Saunders, Jr. menions his Aunt Holt, wife of Dr. William, Holt, his uncle Julius Sauders and his father and mother who were living. Julius was dead and the estate was in process of settlement. So it seems that there were at least three in this family; Julius, Lucy, and D. Sauders, Sr.
