As many John Holt that are out there, it would also help if you would give his birthdate. Then other people might be able to help. Fran
For right now I believe the following to be correct but I am VERY open to any comments. Who was the wife of John Holt? Quoting from a letter of Bill Holt: It was accepted in the 19th century, that Mary Binns was John Holt's wife. This is incorrect, the result of an inaccurate reading in the will of Elizabeth Binns Mason (Surry Co., VA wills, Bk 6, p.173). the "grand" was not captialized in "grand Daughter Mary Holt". The 19th century researcher overlooked the "grand" and created "Mary (Binns) Holt, then, as John Holt had no wife on record, it was concluded that "Mary (Binns) Holt, must have been her name. In fact "Mary (Binns) Holt, never existed; Mary Holt (grand Daughter) was the daughter of John's brother, Thomas. The identity of Mary, wife of John Holt, is still in question. It has been said that she was the widow of Thomas Binns. NO PROOF!
Does anyone on the list have Holts in Ireland in the early to mid 1800s? (Mine were County Kildare.) Thanks. Judy Herbert

Would you have anymore information on Randaloph, as to whom he was married and the names of his children? Also could you direct me as to how to obtain the lineage mentioned in this posting? If this is the correct Randolph, I thank you with all of my heart as I have been searching years for this information.

Andrea: Thanks for the information on Arrington Holt. There is a group of us who are researching the Thomas and Ann Arrington Holt line from Halifax County (descendants of Randall Holt). We only recently discovered that Arrington and Thomas Holt from this unit moved to Washington Co., GA. If anyone is from this line of Arrington and Thomas Holt, please let me know. We have information on the other lines we could share but very little on these two brothers. Sue Thompson sthomps61@alltel.net
I don't know much about Arrington Holt but do know according to the 1800 NC census that by 1800 he had 1 female and two males born between 1790-1800 living with him. In the will of John Purnal of Halifax Co., NC, Bk.3, p.265, he mentions grandaughter Mason Holt and Arrington Holt is the exec. of his will. Could Mason be a child of Arrington? Could Arrington have married a daughter of John Purnals? In the 1816 will of Henry Purnell of Halifax Co., NC it states...to my daughter Elizabeth Henry Purnell and if daughter dies her share to go to Miss Mason Holt. Halifax Co., NC: William Hall to Arrington Holt--13 July 1798--205 pounds & ten shillings--land on S. side of March Swamp- Hartwell Hyde's Mill Swamp (commonly called March Swamp) line formally called Alfred; Cades Branch.--211 acres--Wit. Wm Burt Film 317409 Vol.18 p.345 Halifax Co., NC: Arrington Holt to Joseph Holt--31 May 1798--90 pounds of Virginia Money--219 acres--John Williams line--Burts line--includes house & buildings--AKS comment: it sounds like this land was inherited by Arrington Holt. (film 317049--Vol l9 p133) Halifax Co., NC Deed Bk 19 p175, 7 Dec 1802: Arrington Holt, William Hall & Polly his wife to Isham Hawkins of Halifax Co., N.C. for $600.00, 211 acres of land on the south side of "Marsh Swamp" adjacent Hartwell Hydix Mill Swamp. (now Gilmour's) and "Cader Branch". Wit: J. Rhymes, J. P. S. Marshall J.P. (In proving the deed in court Polly Hall is spoken of as Mary Hall.) [Could Mary/Polly Hall be the wife of the late William Holt who died by 11 Nov 1794?] I think that Arrington Holt and his wife Patsy moved to Georgia in early 1803. This needs to be proven. From Jacqueline Wright I received the following: Washington Co., GA, 1820 Census: pg.143: Arrington Holt: 020101-0F; 2M (10-15/bc1805-10); 1M (16-25/195-1804); 1M (over 46/bn bef 1774) This shows that Arrington was in Georgia and I believe that he was with his brother Thomas Holt as a Thomas Holt shows up on Pg. 136
Regarding the children of WYATT HOLT (b ca 1772), some researchers believe he had a son born btwn Samuel (b ca 1802) and Elizabeth Elmina (Emily?) who was born ca 1804-05. This assumption comes from the Male Columns of Wyatt's 1820 Census: U-10 10-16 16-18 16-26 0-45+ 2 1 1 1 1 The sons were Jesse, age 9; Jacob, age 10-11...(his birthday apparently was in last half of the year) ..... James was age 13 and Samuel, age 18. There was no son age 16-26. The proof there were only 4 sons at that time...is found in "Instructions to Marshalls - Census of 1820", found at front of the 1820 Census Index Book, which explains that the son age 16-18 is the SAME person as listed in the 16-26 Column. (This is the same for any of our ancestors who are in the 1820 Census.) Quoting from these Instructions... "It will be necessary to remember, that the numbers in the columns of free white males btween 16 and 18 - foreigners not naturalized - persons engaged in agriculture - persons engaged in commerce - persons engaged in manufactures - must not be added to the general aggreates, of which the sum total is to be opposed. All the persons included within these columns must necessarily be included also in one of the other columns. Those, for instance, between 16 and 18, will all be repeated in the column of those between 16 and 26." I will be happy to scan and send this page to anyone. Pepper Holt Crisp
Bob: I note your message on the list as follows: <<He is the son of Thomas Holt and Ann Arrington , b. 1754; marr. Patsey Purnal. Or he could be Junior from his parents, Thomas and Patsey. >> The parents of your Thomas Holt, Thomas and Ann Arrington Holt, are in my line of Holts. I believe that Arrington Holt was Thomas' brother and both of these brothers migrated to Washington Co, GA in the early 1800s. I have a great deal of information on the Thomas and Ann Arrington Holt line but very little on Arrington and Thomas Holt (your line). I would very much appreciate hearing from you at sthomps61@alltel.net . Sue Thompson
