I started to research Jeremiah Holt because I descend from Cluverious Coleman. I thought that was an odd name to give a child, but since they used family names for children in those days I started working back. I found that Cluverious' Mother was Grace Holt born 1684 in Abingdon Parrish, Gloucester Va. She was the daughter of Jeremiah Holt of Va. She married Benjamin Cluverious in Abingdon Parrish, Glouchester Va. There I'm stuck. Thanks again to all who replied. M.E. [email protected]
I have just recently started to research the Holt family of Va. Mine would be from Jeremiah Holt of Abingdon Parrish, Glouchester Va. From what I've found so far I don't see a Holt in the Revolutionary war, although Jeremiah and family were there before the war. If an individual did serve in the Revolutionary War and lived until about 1830 or 1835, when another pension was approved and the veteran had to produce statements, sometimes several pages long, to support their claim, then you are in luck. Some publishers have printed books for some (but not all) states with this information. If this Jeremiah Holt lived in the St. Asaph's or Chatham Districts of Orange County, NC in the 1790 census, then he is in all probability a descendant of the Michael Holt (German) line. And most, if not all, of those Holts served in the Revolutionary War if they were in the proper age range. However, it may be difficult to prove it. Unless his name can be found in some of the military rolls or if he did not live long enough to collect a land grant or pension of some kind, then there may not be any documentation available on his service. The Holts are probably related by blood, the Rogers are also probably related by blood, and the Drury Holt line (at least) is probably related to the Rogers line by marriage. My suggestion is that you post this to the Rogers list and ask the same question. You can also visit the Rogers archives for additional information. The Rogers line is well documented.
