    3. I followed the link and it's really very interesting what the Son's of Liberty (aka O.R.M.) did and continue to do. Here is a small portion of the information from the page: The fraternity traces its origins back to 1765 and was originally known as the Sons of Liberty. These patriots concealed their identities and worked "underground" to help establish freedom and liberty in the early Colonies. They patterned themselves after the great Iroquois Confederacy and its democratic governing body. Their system, with elected representatives to govern tribal councils, had been in existence for several centuries. From the url: http://www.redmen.org/ It is noteworthy that since 1991 the order has given over a million dollars towards alzheimers research! 3. I recently read a book 'THE HORNET'S NEST' by (President) Jimmy Carter which concerns the American Revolution in the South, particularly the Carolinas and Georgia. It is classed as fiction but it certainly isn't a historical romance. There's lots of history of the fighting and I think all would enjoy it. 1. Re: [HOLT-L] Re: Ancestors of Henry Holt and wife Dorcas Armstrong
    2. Judy, Thank you very much for your response to my query on the ancestors of Henry Holt. It is entirely possible that Henry did indeed go back to either Ireland or England and acquire another family. The Holt name has been in use in Ireland since c1200 so he could indeed have been an Irishman. Circumstantial evidence and a lot of wishful thinking attach him to the family of Rowland Holt, brother of Sir John Holt, (Lord Chief Justice of the Kings Bench 1687-1709) both sons of Sir Thomas Holt. One line of thinking is that he sailed for England and him and the ship were lost at sea. As of now, there is no evidence of what happened to him . We do know that Dorcas Armstrong, and Irish Lass and Henry's wife, was in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pa. in 1735 were she was hauled into court for beating up on her friends husband. The next I've been able to find either one of them was in 1738, when Dorcas, obviously a widow, married Arthur Buchanan in Gloucester, New Jersey, just across the river from Philadelphia. Again, thank you very much for responding, Bob Holt in Arizona

Perhaps your Henry Holt who disappeared in 1735 went back to Ireland and had another family. I know there were lots of Holt's with Irish backgrounds.

His mother was Effie Mae Day b. 21 Dec 1921 - d. 20 Feb 1997. Effie had told Mark another man was his father but recently we had the DNA test done through FamilyTreeDNA and Mark did not match that family but did match another HOLT member in the database so it looks like the name William D Holt is the accurate one. 1. RE: [HOLT-L] Hiram Holt, Sr. -- Halifax Co, NC
    2. Betty Wiggins
    3. Thanks Helene and Joe. I found out early on in my research that there were many Hiram Holts. I don't know if my Hiram Holt goes back to Connecticut. Probably not. Here is what I know about my Hiram Holt, Sr.: ************************************************************ Hiram Holt (b. 1806, d. before 1866) m. (1) Sally, m. (2) abt 1838 Wealthy Ann Irby (b. 1806, d. about 1875), daughter of William Irby (b. 1767, d. 1851) Wealthy Ann Irby had previously been married to _____ Hall, according to estate settlement of Thomas Irby. Hiram Holt Sr. died intestate and his estate, valued at $2500 was administered by Richard B. Parker. Parker died 1869 and W. H. Shields was named administrator. Conclusion from circumstantial evidence is that Hiram Holt probably was the son of Temperance Holt of Halifax Co, NC (Joseph Holt-->Thomas Holt-->Thomas Holt-->William Holt-->Randall Holt of Hoggs Island, VA). Hiram Holt Sr.'s children W.H., Hiram Jr., and Ann Mariah were named in an 1866 division of property in Halifax Co, NC, along with Temperance Holt's other known children. Also, my grandmother named one of her daughters Tempie Holt Harrison, and Aunt Tempie was always told she was named after her great grandmother Temperance Holt. Hiram Holt, Sr. and Temperance Holt's other children lived within a few miles of each other in Halifax Co, NC. Richard B. Parker was administrator of the estate of Hiram Holt Sr. about 1865. Richard B. Parker was the husband of Nancy Holt, daughter of Temperance Holt. It has been concluded recently that all of Temperance Holt's HOLT children were illegitimate. Only the last child, James Harvey Parker, product of her marriage to Joseph Parker, was legitimate. ************************************************************* 1840 Halifax Co, NC Holt, Hiram, head of household 1 male 30-40 (Hiram Holt, age 34) 1 female 30-40 (wife Wealthy Ann Irby, age 35) (Hiram Holt Sr. and Wealthy Ann Irby married about 1838) 1 female under 5 (who is this?) 1 free colored male 24-36 1 free colored female 10-24 1 free colored female 56-100 1850 Halifax Co, NC -- (Is this the right Hiram? WM. H. SHIELDS. Appoint dbn. NOTE: Temperance Holt (b. 1780, d. 27 Jan 1852) did not marry her cousin, Jesse Holt, as widely reported in early genealogies. That Jesse A. Holt moved to Bartons Creek, Wilson Co, TN. It is probable that Temperance Holt had her Holt children with Jesse Neville, of Halifax Co, NC. There is, however, clear record of her marriage in May 1822 to Joseph Parker (b. 18 Jan 1761, d. 1835). Temperance Holt was 42 years old when she married Joseph Parker and 43 when she had their son James Harvey Parker.
