I am a HOLT of African and Indian descent who is still searching, after many years of research, for a family connection. The 1870 census enumerates Edith Holt and her husband Boswell Ray in Alamance County; however per the census, she was born in South Carolina, around 1815 and Roy around 1803. I assume that Edith and Boswell were slaves since I have not located them on any of the registers of Free Blacks. Does anyone have any information about the migration of the HOLT and RAY slave holding families migrating from South Carolina to North Carolina. Jalil H. Self, 30, 1830, Tn Luticia, wife, 25, 1835, Ark Paulina, C., dau, 16, 1844, Ark Spencer M., son, 1846, Ark In the 1880 census William (Billy) stated that his mother was born in Arkansas, althou he didn't know where his father was born. What county is the Martin Cemetery located in? Donna

Hi, can you tell me what you know about William (Billy)? His wife's name, any children, any relatives last names? There is 1 listed in the 1870, William M., in Rusk Co., Tx., but if you follow him into the 1880 census, he is listed as William N., and if your Billy is living with Spencer Self, this can't be him, unless he is counted 2x's. So anything else that you might know, might help narrow down the search. Are there any Hudson's in your tree? Donna PS, no relation, just a helper.

Self (sometimes read as Priscilla), born 1840 in Newton county, AR, who was daughter to Nathaniel Self and Ursula Burleson. Her next youngest sibling was spencer Marion Self (1843-1918). Thier older sister Letitia/Lucretia Self (1833-1911) married James Simpson Holt. With at least one other sibling, David Bailey Simpson Self, these relocated to Hood County, TX, while others in the familyremained in Johnson county, AR, and the surrounding area. I would try out the tentative theory that Paulina C. Self married a Sparks man and is your Plina Caroline Sparks, and if so, the likely mother of your grandfather William Marion Sparks. Even if this proves to not be true, you have at least whittled down the possibilities.
