Surnames: Holt Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Eej.2ACIB/2709.1 Message Board Post: Sheridan R. Holt enlisted in the United States Army at Fort Benjamin Harrison, in Indianapolis, Indiana October 9, 1942. He was a native of Indiana and his place of residence at the time of enlistment was Spencer, Indiana in Owen County. Pfc. Holt had four years of high school and had been an earth boring machine operator, a concrete mixer operator and a highway construction machine operator prior to enlistment. He was single, without dependents and died June 13, 1944, while serving in the Southwest Pacific during World War II. He is officially listed as missing in action or buried at sea. His name is honored on the “Tablets of the Missing” at Manila American Cemetery in the Philippine Islands. ________________________________________ My wife and I visited the Manila American Cemetery more than two years ago as mere visitors but went home here in the Philippines with a mission in our hearts. We instantly knew only a handful of Americans had ever visited these graves. We took eight or ten photos in hopes of locating a family of one of the men. Within two weeks our efforts struck gold as we did find a family. They were so grateful and suddenly we were hooked on our work. We would not try to locate the families of Indiana servicemen and send them free photos. We sat down and drew a realistic boundary of our focus. It would include Central Indiana and my former home in Madison County. We worked hard and got the photos and files in order and expanded our work to include the entire state of Indiana. As of today we have located 151 Indiana families of men killed in World War II, that are honored at Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines. During our search we could not turn anyone away and found an addition 41 families across America. Please visit our website and see the photos of these great men that made Supreme Sacrifices in the name of Freedom. Please join us in honoring them by visiting our website today. Also view the three photos attached to this posting Indiana Soldiers & Sailors http://fizkid.tripod.com/ We have record of these following references thanks to the Indiana State Library World War II Servicemen's Database but do not have the information that was printed in the newspapers. We would appreciate any help we could get with the references or in finding the family of Pfc. Sheridan Holt. We especially would enjoy receiving obituaries and or photos of the men in military uniform to honor them further on our website. 1. [HOLT] Drury Marvin Holt
    2. Millianne Lehmann
    3. I am looking for information about Drury Marvin Holt who was born in 1891 in Arkansas to Drury J. Holt and Mary Ann Evans Holt. Drury Marvin had at least two brothers, John D. (b, 1878) and Charles L. (b. 1893). In the 1910 census, the father DJ is listed with a new wife, Elsie. None of the sons are listed. Drury Marvin appears next on a WWI draft registration card where he indicates that he is a homesteader living near Buffalo, WY and that he is helping to keep his sister, age 6. Drury M was married about 1924 to Vergie Huffman (Her maiden name. Drury was her second husband, and I believe her first husband's name was Hendrie or Hendrix.) and had a son Charles Marvin Holt in 1925. I found Drury M and Vergie in a City directory for Sheridan, WY 1927-28 and in the 1930 census in Sheridan. Drury Marvin is the great-grandfather of my step-children for whom I am writing a family history, so I would love to be able to fill in some of these blanks: 1. Did John D. Holt die in infancy? 2. What ever happened to Charles L. Holt? 3. What was the name of the 6 year old sister, and was her Mother Elsie? 4. The family says that Drury Marvin served in WWI. Does anyone know any details of this service? 5. When and where did Drury M die? 6.There is a family legend that he was in trouble with the law in Oklahoma and fled to Wyoming. Any truth to this? I would appreciate and help or advice I can get in answering these questions or any other information about Drury M. 3. Hi Martha, Wesley Holt is Thomas Holt. His name was Thomas Wesley Holt and he flipped back and forth between using Thomas and Wesley as his first name. The one you found married to Victoria is my great great grandfather. It was common for people to use their middle names so you might have some luck in searching census records if you use your Thomas's middle name. At least I know I've had some luck doing that as in the case of the Faulkner census. Best wishes in your search. I've still not had time to check my database to see if your Holt's are connected to mine but we are in the Holt DNA database so if you have anyone on your side on it that should set it all straight.
