Dick, Long time since we communicated. Your sequence of husbands for Dorcas is reversed. Henry Holt was her first husband. In fact, her obituary strongly suggests they were married before leaving County Monaghan, Ireland c1730. As close as I can discern, they had only two children, sons Henry b c1731 and Thomas b Aug 1733. Henry is never really heard of after the christening of Thomas in Christ Church, Philadelphia in Sept 27, 1733 at one month of age. Several researchers have said he disappeared in 1735 without supplying any documentation for the statement. All we know is Dorcas married Arthur Buchanan in Gloucester, New Jersey, across the river from Philadelphia, in 1738. they had Armstrong b 1739, Jane 1741, William 1743, Arthur 1745, Robert 17 Jan 1749. Here is my citation for her marriage to Arthur: MARRIAGE:1738; Gloucester County, New Jersey Marriage records, Compiled by H. stanley Craig, Published by Gloucester, Co. Historical Society, 1936, H. Stanley Craig, Publisher, Merchantville, N.J. : After Henry Holt's. death? in 1735, she married, in 1738, Arthur Buchanan, also a native of Ireland, and a merchant of Lancaster Pa. married by John Ladd, Gloucester, New Jersey. Also shown in "Stewart Genealogical and Historical Miscellany, No 1, 1918, Gloster Historical Society, Woodbury, New Jersey, by L.R. Sterret" Photocopis of title pages and citations in files of Robert E Holt. Nice hearing from you again and I hope this helps, Bob Holt, in Arizona
I have some Holt females that I sure would like to find connections as to which family(s) they come from: Lewis Ross and Fannie Holt Azariah Shelton and Mary "Polly" Holt James Lewis & Lucy Holt Samuel Lewis and Bricey Holt All occurred in the east Tennessee area and all were in the very early 1800's....the Samuel and Bricey could have, possibly been in west TN but not likely Joyce Gaston Reece
My Holt line comes from Parrottsville, in Cocke County and not Bybee. They descend from Wyatt Holt's line, who came from North Carolina and then settled in Greene County. While I understand recent DNA testing does show that the lines originally thought not to be related are indeed related nobody knows how far back that connection happened. The people in both of the Holt lines in Cocke County have always believed they were not related so the connection must be a long ways back. Robert, we have exchanged information in the past. I am Dick Gates, also a descendant of Henry Holt and Dorcas Armstrong. I would like to compare notes again. I know in the past you corrected me on trying to connect Dorcas's second husband, Arthur Bucanan, to President Bucanan, but I have only 5 children of that marriage as you do, but 4 children of the Holt/Armstron marriage. For all of you who've written to ask me for a search engine for my extensive website, I've just added one. Now you can do a name search of "First Settlers" and all the other areas at my site. Enjoy! http://genealogy2.com/ Sarah
I don't have a surname page or index, but would love to find a volunteer willing to make one for my site. lol I have 4 websites and the genealogy one has over a hundred pages, but the "First Settlers" section is only 16 pages with only a few names on each page, and some pages only have one name on them. Several people have written to say they've found additional ancestors, by looking through the pages so I guess it can also be a good thing too. Darrell, if your John Holt came from Pennsylvania there is a good probability he descends from the line of Immigrant Henry Holt and his wife Dorcas Armstrong. As far as known now, they had two male descendants, Henry b c1731, and Thomas b Aug 1733 and christened in Christ Church (Episcopalian) in Philadelphia Sept. 27, 1733. Both sons had descendants named John as did some of their descendants. They were very prominant in Mifflin and Centre Counties Pennsylvania. Henry disappeared c1735 and Dorcas married Arthur Buchanan in New Jersey in 1738 and had five children. Dorcas had six descendants serve in the Revolution. Several folks have used Thomas's son John as a means of getting into the Daughters of the American Revolution organization. An excellent source of well documented genealogy to the present. Also, If you think it will help, I can provide you with some data. Regards, Bob Holt, in Arizona

Seeing all you people connect with one another makes me want to sit down in the floor and cry. Does anyone have anything on John Holt b. possibly PA or VA about 1775/80. Married Elizabeth Conner about 1800. They moved to Coshocton Co., OH around 1812/17. He died in Coshocton Co. 1846. Their children were John Jr., Abigail, Isaac, Stephen, Margaret, Mary (Polly), Rebacca, Sarah and Elizabeth. Please help me. My wife said it is terrible to watch a grown man cry. Darrell Holt
