Does anyone have information on the Holt line that was in Monongalia Co., VA (WV) or Fayette Co., PA during the 1780 to 1820 period. As many of you know, I firmly believe, without proof, that Preston Holt (born 1808 in Grainger, married Rutha Campbell b 1809 in Claiborn) and Kendrick were brothers - parents were Henry Holt born 1787 and Elizabeth Bowman born 1788. Kendrick married Mary (Polly) Sumpter on 2/20/1845 in Claiborne Co. 1860 Claiborne Census lists #91-293 Kendrick Holt 32 laborer Mary 30 Sarah 9 Rufus 7 James 5 Henry 12 Eliza 14 Elbert 2 Breckenridge 3/12 Elizabeth Holt 72 I assume that Elizabeth was living with Kendrick as Henry died 1850. Eliza Holt married Isham Seals on 6/15/1858 Henry, possibly Henry Clay married Mary C Hope this is helpful. So far, I have only a theory, that being that he was perhaps the son of Kendrick Holt who appears in 1860 in Claiborne County, TN. He is a mystery man, for sure. He was the second husband of Matilda Baldwin, whose first husband was Lackey Newsom. Matilda and Lackey were my GG-Grandparents. Lackey was killed in the closing days of the Civil War, on February 28, 1865. Henry and Matilda were married by August, 1865. They were very young--only 18! Yet Matilda already had three children by then (was married first at 14). By 1870, Henry and Matilda were 23 and living in Floyd County, KY. Henry appeared on the 1890 Special Veterans Census in 1890, listing as having served 9 months in 1862 in the 5th Tennesee Cavalry, Co. B. He would have been only 15. Henry Holt is shrouded in mystery. Some thought he was hiding out from the law; some thought he wasn't a Holt at all. Yet, he was always consistent with his birthplace and his age, which placed his date of birth as 1847 in Tennessee, which is the correct date and place for him to be Kendrick's son. However--there is NO PROOF. When I search for information on Kendrick Holt's son, Henry, I cannot find any. Although Mary is an extremely common name, I note that Matilda and Henry Holt named their first daughter Mary. Perhaps this is in fact the one and the same Henry Holt and daughter Mary was named for his mother. Did your Darcus Holt marry Samuel Newsome? He is related to Matilda Baldwin's first husband, Lackey Newsom. I have some interesting anecdotal information about Henry Holt, along with a picture or two of him and Matilda. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message Confidentiality Notice: This e-mail message, including any attachments, is for the sole use of the intended recipient(s) and may contain confidential and privileged information. I did finally find Kendrick hiding out in the 1870 census as William K. Holt. You can see this is Kendrick from the children. So, I think this will put your theory to rest as Henry is still living with him. I will put all I have been able to find at the bottom. There is something that is strange. In the 1880 census, I do not see a daughter named Darcus. Although I know nothing about this family. I have also placed a couple of RootsWeb links at the bottom. The first one does have Darcus in the family list. The second link has a story about Henry. It states that he was thought to be a full-blooded Cherokee. If this is true, could be a reason why you cannot find out anything about his youth. Good Luck! You have brought up an excellent question here. On paper I descend from the Anthony Holt in Wayne County in 1860, however, the DNA does not pan out with the others. You've given me another lead to work on. Perhaps Anoy and Anthony are two different people from North Carolina which could be where my line went astray. I'll definitely be checking into it. Thanks! I suspect his son, Henry, is the same Henry Holt who married Matilda Baldwin Newsom in 1865 and raised a family with her in Floyd/Pike Counties in Kentucky. My Henry is a "mystery man," seemed disconnected from his family, yet on all the censuses stated place of birth as Tennessee, age consistently with a birth year of 1847-48, and in the 1890 special Veteran's census stated he enlisted in 1862 in the 5th Tennessee Cavalry, Co. B., and served nine months. I would like to be able to connect Henry back to his family, if possible. Does anyone know what became of Kendrick Holt's son, Henry Holt?

I am an amateur genealogist but I read as much as I can and try to learn from others and so I read this and Holt is one of my lines but I was not at all offended by your message. I am glad to know those in specific areas that offer assistance at cost or not is the other persons decision. I enjoyed the letter although it did not help me in my search. We will promise to do our best to help you. I've read the article. I just spent the day in the Cleveland/Bradley Family History Library and there are a multitude of Bradley Historical records there so hopefully we can locate Nathan and Sarah. Can you tell me if you have had any work done at all or places where you have already looked so I don't waste your time and money in re-doing what is already done? I have a friend who has done some work on the Tallents so she might give us info on Nathan...we'll sure check on it. Now, as for the given name Greenberry....I've seen it as a given name several different times in several different families. The Removal of the Cherokee occurred in 1838-39 so if Nathan shows up in 39 or 40 I'd say he's gotten a land grant. I have the Ocoee District Land Grants indexed and we may find him there. Since Greenberry was born 10-22-1833 in Georgia, we'll want to pinpoint WHERE in Georgia so I know where to look for Sarah. Do you know? I'm going to assume the northern counties...perhaps Murray?? I can do more study on the situation when I'm not so tired and not so brain dead. It's been a long day. If you have criteria you would like for me to follow as to number of hours please let me know....otherwise I will bill you every two weeks or so for time spent searching, analyzing and reporting the findings to you. I will email you along as I locate information and mail you written reports with all listings of data searched as I locate data. I've usually been sending digital pictures of the important data in printed form and on CD. If you prefer anything different please just let me know. If you would like to send a retainer fee please mail to Joyce Reece, 210 County Road 488, Etowah, Tennessee.
