Just to add some fuzziness to a fuzzy situation: Francis Holmes came to Massachusetts from York County, England is about 1635 and settled eventually in Stamford, Conn. where some four children are identified. One son, John, married Rachel Waterbury and slipped over into Bedford, N.Y. where he had some ten children, including: Captain Jonathan, born 1674 in Stamford, Conn., who married Dorothy Roberts and was in Bedford, N.Y. by 1698. Only two children have been identified of J and D. Capt. Jonathan and Dorothy had a Jonathan Jr. by 1703; but I cannot tie anything to a Samuel Holmes for the right time to be the father of Lydia. This Bedford, N.Y. line has a lot of Stephen's, Richard's and John's and the Stephen line over in Stamford had some Samuel's.
