There was a George Pembertun Holmes, who came in 1837 and became a professor at William and Mary college. There were other professors, one at University of Virginia, "Holmes Hall" was named after George Frederick Holmes, who started there in 1857. There was a Major Arthur Campbell Holmes who fought from 1777-1781, in the Revolutionary War. The family mostly lives on the east coast and primarily in the south. There was Col Edward Anderson Holmes who fought in the Civil War was taken prisoner by the Union army in 1864 while he was still a citizen of England.
