I wonder if someone might be able to shed some light on this situation. For four or five years, I've been looking for the parents/siblings of Sarah Emma Holmes Poland, a g-grandmother, without any luck whatsoever. Then earlier this week I discovered she remarried in 1917 after Charles E. Poland, her first husband, died (in 1914). On the second marriage license application, Sarah Emma listed her birth date as 17 August 1857, her place of birth as Delaware County, OH, her mother as Catherine Johnson and her father as Elmer J. CHERRYHOLMES. Everyone in the family thought her maiden name was Holmes, and now it turns out to be Cherryholmes. Has anyone heard of this name before? Do you know of others who've shortened their names to Holmes? It's long been believed that Sarah Emma Holmes was part American Indian. Any comments, suggestions appreciated. Don
