    1. Earliest HOLMES project
    2. Sharon Sergeant
    3. A few weeks ago, I initiated a HOLMES project for migrations based on Judith Glad's 1998 earliest HOLMES project. However, it is clear that our "earliest" HOLMES is still the favorite. I am working on a broader migration analysis scheme, but will stick to "earliest" HOLMES for now. If you can go to http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/7945/HolmesCensus.doc you will see the results of Judith's 1998 earliest HOLMES project with a little bit of sorting and a demographic picture of the HOLMES in the 1850, 1880, 1920 and 1990 US census to give you an idea of what the "relative density" of the HOLMES surname is in those US census time periods as compared to the results of the April 1998 HOLMES earliest ancestor project. CAUTION: These 1998 results may reflect people who are no longer on the rootsweb HOLMES list and/or email address changes. If you do not have browser capabilties, I can repost a text version of th 1998 resluts (Judith did it in 4 or 5 messages). In order to compile the 1999 results and produce a database that might be updated and maintained on a more regular basis or extended into more detailed migration paths, I would like to "end" the submissions to the 1999 earliest HOLMES project as of Friday March 12. So please, take a look at last year's results and the US census results, http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/7945/HolmesCensus.doc and send a message to the list if you have been "lurking" and not updated or added your own earliest HOLMES ancestor in the last few weeks. Because I have not instituted a specific format for the 1999 "earliest" project, there are many variations in the responses, so it is a little harder to compile the results. The real goal of my larger migration project is to be able to extract the migration information from various formats with tools. For the time being, we will keep the "earliest" results presentation to a simplified HOLMES/allied families/date/location/submitter structure and data collection. So, towards the end of March, I will compile the 1999 results through March 12 and present a web page table to which you can make corrections and additions - cuz I will probably miss something. The bottom line is to create more ways to help us find our families and the researchers in other branches. thanks, Sharon Varnum Sergeant, grandaughter of Esther E Holmes Crewe > 1906 NB> 1920s -1960s MA ____________________________________________________________________ Get free e-mail and a permanent address at http://www.amexmail.com/?A=1
