    3. Listee's I am trying to trace a HOLMES ancestor in Greenwich. Zadock Bates HOLMES appears in a marriage in New York City 1837. His Census listings indicate that he was born in Conn. in about 1812. My only connection to Greenwich is the fact that a Bates HOLMES resided there (1810, 1820 census). Assuming that Bates was a family name of his mother or grandmother, Zadock might certainly have been given that as his middle name. Bates was married to Mary BANKS in 1809 at the 2nd Cong. Church, and to Elizabeth BANKS in 1804 at the Stanwich Cong. Church. They may have been sisters, although Spencer Mead mentions only Mary. Bates died in 1859 and is buried in 'North Greenwich'. There were 4 HOLMES in Greenwich in 1800, but only Rueben had a male in household between 16 & 26, which would have been Bates' age at that time. Bates had a daughter Sally who joined the 2nd Cong Church in 1831. The 1820 Census shows 5 children in Bates' household but of course they might not have all been his. It also shows two males over 45, so Bates could have had a brother and children living with him. It also show no female over 16 yrs, so Mary may have died by that time. Any clue on the above would be greatly appreciated. Bill S
