    1. THE REV. OBADIAH HOLMES TO ABRAHAM LINCOLN
    2. Steve Leeper
    3. John, I am told that the connection is documented in a book by the name of "The American Family of Obadiah Holmes" (1915) CS-71/H75/1915, by Colonel J. T. HOLMES: available through the NEHGS Book Loan Circulating Library and on microfiche/film at an LDS Family History Center. My information on Obadiah and Katherine (Hyde) Holmes was, however, obtained primarily from hand written notes from a Holmes family Bible by Mary Leeper Long (1866-1939), my great great aunt. I have her hand written notes. The daughter of Obadiah and Katherine Hyde Holmes, Lidiah Holmes, married Capt. John Browne in 1663. The daughter of John and Lidiah Holmes Brown, Sarah Browne, married Richard Saltar. In about 1692, Richard and Sarah Browne Saltar, had a daughter named Hannah Saltar, who married Mordecai Lincoln before 1714. Mordecai and Hannah Saltar Lincoln had a son, who became known as "Virginia" John Lincoln. This "Virginia" John Lincoln was the father of the Abraham Lincoln who settled in Kentucky and was killed by Indians there in the 1780s. This Abraham Lincoln was the grandfather of Abraham Lincoln, the President of the United States. Therefore, the Rev. Obadiah and Katherine Hyde Holmes were the fifth great grandparents of Abraham Lincoln. In addition, Hannah Browne Saltar had a son, named Edwin Saltar, who lived in New Jersey and was said to be from the Holmes line. Edwin Saltar wrote the Early Dutch Settlers and wrote an article on the Rev. Obadiah Holmes which was printed in the Monmouth Democrat newspaper of September 6, 1888. This is the connection as I have had it passed on to me. Steve Leeper
