Here's what I have: Henry J(?) HOLMES born ca 1835 in either ILL or NY... different on different census. Not sure where in ILL or NY to search. Married to a Mary-- when found on 1860 census-- she is from Ohio. Her name might be either: Sarah Marie BRAINERD or Mary SLAYBACK Found a Marriage recd for Sarah Maria Brainerd and Henry HOLMES in St. Louis MO 12/26/1853 Family history has it that Mary's name was Slayback and from Collinsville ILL..and that this family had come thru Ohio. Henry and Mary had children: Frank Henry HOLMES Howard HOLMES Edwin J HOLMES Clara HOLMES Henry HOLMES remarried in 1868 to Julia SMITH in Harris CO TX. Henry and Julia had 2 children: Jessie HOLMES (male) Virginia HOLMES Appears likely that Henry and Mary came from St. Louis MO.or the ILL. side of the river..and down to Galveston TX. Love any help or leads. I will put the census info below. the family was found on 1860 Galveston Co TX census and 1870 and 1880 Harris (Houston) Co.
