SYLVANUS HOLMES Sylvanus Holmes of Grange [Coos Co., NH], died Sunday afternoon at 5 o'clock, after a long illness of diabetes, aged 69 years. He was a native of Riverton [Jefferson,NH], one of a family of 12 children of Reed and Betsey Holmes, but had lived in Lancaster for more than 50 years. He had been engaged in the lumber business practically all his life, and his second wife, who was Mrs. Elvira Brown, of Mechanic Falls, ME, and three sisters and four sisters [sic] survive, the latter being: Mrs. C. R. Winslow, of Casco, Me.; Mrs. I. H. Quimby, of Island Pond, Vt; Mrs. Seldon C. Howe, of Lancaster; J. W. Holmes, of Groveton; Asa H. Holmes of Holyoke, Mass.; L. H. Holmes of Norway, Me. He had no children, but there are five surviving children of Mrs. Holmes' former marriage. The funeral service was held this (Wednesday) morning at 10 o'clock, at the home, Rev. Clinton W. Wilson, pastor of the Congregational Church, officiating. The burial was in Northumberland. "Grange" Sylvanus Holmes passed away Sunday, after several weeks of intense suffering with blood poisoning. A year ago his life was prolonged by the amputation of a leg. Mr. Holmes was a well-known worthy citizen, and his loss will be keenly felt by his friends.
