Jim, Do you happen to know the father or grandfather of Samuel HOLMES? My ggrandfather, Russell Humphrey HOLMES, was born in Preston Hollow, 2 miles north of Greene Co., NY in 1814. His brother, Rufus Watson HOLMES, was born in 1812. They may have been 1st cousins of Samuel. Rus Holmes ----- Original Message ----- From: J.W. Hello, I'm researching the Brown family (Nicholas, in particular) and have found that there was a Nicholas who was the great-grandson of John Brown (1630-~1706) and Mary Holmes (d. ~1690), she being the daughter of Obadiah Holmes who was born in 1607 in Preston, England. John and Mary Brown lived in Providence, RI in the 1600's/early 1700's. There is also an Obadiah Brown, Jr. mentioned as being one who refused to partake in the Gnaddenhutten massacre of the Christian Moravian Indians in 1782 in the PA/WV area. Obadiah Jr. had a great-nephew named Col. J. T. Holmes who was a prominent attorney in Columbus, OH. I also have a Nancy Whitaker (1760-1829) who married a James Holmes (dates unknown) who is buried in the Holmes-Wells Cemetery in Licking Co., OH. And another ancestor of mine was Catherine Brown (1799-1876, Licking Co., OH) who married Eli Holmes, Sr. (b. 3/1/1795, Washington Co., PA-d. ??, Zanesville, Muskingdom, OH) Does anyone on this list have these ancestors? Any information would be greatly appreciated. I have very little on this branch, but would be glad to share anything I can. Thanks! Rita (Brown) Werner Taylorville, IL
