Does anyone have a THOMAS HOLMES that died March 14, 1879, Carthge Missouri. Just wondering because my Great Aunt gave me a copy from the "History of Jasper County" and it mentions that Thomas Holmes was killed by lightning, north of Carthage Missouri. Carolyn
I am searching for information on Hannah Holmes b.1744 d.1788 Ipswich MA, daughter of Robt.Holmes and Elizabeth Goodhue. Particularly any information on her marriage to (Alex) McKinsey or McKenzie and there son John b.1779. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Skip Mackenzie
Cynthia: I think you and I have corresponded before--probably about the Lynn family. It's good to hear from you again. Dennis Holmes was the first son of Walter and Ruth Springer Holmes. He was born in 1789 in South Carolina. They moved to Kentucky while he was a child. I'm not sure which state their second child Nancy was born in. My great grandfather Isaac was born 17 Nov 1797 in Tennessee while they were returning from a visit back to South Carolina. Their other children were James, born about 1802; John Walter, born about 1803; Rebecca, Nov 1805; Elizabeth, 1806; and Margaret, about 1808. Did you know that Frances 'Frankey' Holmes, who married James K. Lynn, was also a daughter of Dennis and Keziah, born about 1812? If you ever get any info on other children of Dennis and Keziah, please let me know. --Ted Holmes
Ted and Ted, Couldn't resist! :-) Anyway, noticed your postings and was wondering if you have any information on Dennis Holmes and wife Kisiah LNU. Their daughter Sarah Elizabeth b. 1817, married Edley Osburn Lynn in Morgan Co. AL. Their daughter, Elizabeth, married James Calvin Chambers July 19, 1863 in Morgan Co. They are my gg-grandparents. Sincerely, Cynthia Chandler East Peoria, IL
William HOLMES (born unknown, died July 1811 Cincinnati OH) and Elizabeth PATTERSON (died 10 March 1856 at age 69) had two known children: Louisa, born Aug 1809, and Norval, born Sept 1811. This family either lived in Pittsburgh PA or moved there at some point in the early 1800s. A John PATTERSON would be appointed Norval's guardian in 1828 according to Allegheny Co PA records but we do not know if he is any relation to Elizabeth. This is all that we have on William, Elizabeth, and Louisa, and we would like to know more. Martha

Phoebe was born 8/4/1832 possibly but not absolutely in Blandford, MA. Her parents were James L. Stewart b3/17/1797 Blandford, MA, Anna Lathrop b6/2/1807 either West Milford or Bethlehem,CT. I have more info on James and Anna if needed. William married Phoebe 11/6/1859 but I don't know where :0(. That's all folks! Can anyone help??? I sure would love to have more info on this line for my database. Phoebe and my Great great Grandpa were sisters and the info I have is some that my Grandmother had written down at some point. I am looking for connection to Mary (Matey) Holmes, b. 1859 Grandby Center, Oswego Co., NY m. to Gene (maybe (Eugene) Dixon, Father: William N Holmes born Ireland 12 Jun 1830 d. 23 Nov. 1889,. m. 6 Nov. 1853 in Mexico, Oswego Co. NY to Harriet Himes b. 2 Aug. 1829, d. 13 Jan, 1874. I know Mary lived in the Mt. Morris, MI area for a while.
To anyone shaking the Cumberland tree: I *THOUGHT* my ancestors came from the Lanercost area - North-East Cumberland, 15..30 km east of Carlisle... and I now have a fairly complete list of all Holmes families in that area going back to the late 1500's. Not finding a strong link anywhere in that lot (two possibles, both unlikely), I went for the last known female. That lead me to the Wetheral and Dalston area, which is 15..30 km south-east and south of Carlisle. I now have hundreds of names+dates for that general area (via the IGI), but the family ties are still pure conjecture. However... If anyone else is researching that area (not Alston - that's too far east!) I would love to hear from them. Maybe they can help me with links, and maybe I can help them with dates. But, PLEASE! I can't possibly answer queries on the lines of my g-g-g-father John was from Michigan, probably came over from England, have you got him? Two reasons: a. I have absolutely no info on EMIGRANTS TO the States (how dare you call them immigrants from England?!) ;>) b. I have about 50 Johns, Jo.s, Jhons, etc. Which one do you want??? Regards to all - Paul Holmes

Ric, your James L. Holmes appears to have been my great-uncle. I haven't been able to prove conclusively that he is the Uncle Jim, but other researchers in the family think he is and the circumstances regarding your James seem to match our family legends. He was an elder brother of my grandfather Isaac Reeves Holmes. Their parents were Isaac Holmes and Sarah 'Sally' Lynn. Isaac was born 17 Nov 1797 in Tennessee, the second son of Walter Holmes and Ruth Springer, who actually were residents of Kentucky. Sarah Lynn was born 19 Feb 1805 in Bumcombe Co., NC, daughter of Revolutionary War veteran James Lynn Jr. and Margaret White. Sarah died 9 June 1871 and Isaac died 1 Nov 1874. Both are buried at Beech Creek Baptist Church Old Cemetery in Winn Parish, LA. Children of Isaac and Sarah, with dates and places of birth, were: Mary Ann Holmes Holly--2 Dec 1821, Alabama J. W. 'Bird' Holmes--20 Nov 1823, Morgan Co., AL James L. Holmes--About 1826, Morgan Co., AL Hugh White Holmes--25 Aug 1830, Cullman Co., AL William Holmes-- About 1832, Morgan Co., AL Margaret Ann Holmes Williams--1836, Morgan Co., AL Lavinia A. Holmes Smith--Jun 1839, Morgan Co., AL Sarah Ruth Holmes Gray--4 April 1840, Morgan Co., AL Ellen Jane Holmes--March 1842, Morgan Co., AL Ruth S. Holmes Guyton-- 7 Sep 1844, Itawamba Co., MS Isaac Reeves Holmes-- 16 Nov 1847, Itawamba Co., MS Bird, White and William migrated to Louisiana in early to mid 1850s. William died shortly thereafter. When the Civil War started, Bird and White joined the Union Army. I believe Bird did not stay long, but White achieved the rank of Major. James joined the Confederate Army and was killed. My grandfather as a teenage boy was impressed into a Confederate unit but promptly deserted with the help of one of the officers. My father Joseph Walter Holmes (1887-1981) believed Uncle Jim's widow had taken her children back to Alabama after he was killed, and thus our family lost track of them. Isaac and Sarah moved to Louisiana about 1870 and died soon after. Walter Holmes and Ruth Springer are the earliest ancestors we have been able to identify in this Holmes line. Walter is believed to have been born in SC about 1760. He owned land in Union Co. They moved to Kentucky probably in the mid 1790s, got a land grant on Mill Creek in Barren Co., (now located in Monroe Co.), and were members of Mill Creek Baptist Church. He was a resident of Bedford Co., TN, when he sold this land. Around 1819 he got a grant in Morgan Co., AL. Walter apparently died in the late 1840s and Ruth in the 1850s. They are buried in the Old Enon Cemetery near Eva, AL, north of Cullman. -- Ted Holmes
