I am searching for information on my grandfather, Roland August Holmes, who emigrated to Northern New York State in the late 19th century, marrked Minnie Turner, and later settled in Syracuse, NY. He was employed by the New York Central RR as a brakeman on what was was called the northern run. He was killed in a railroad accident in 1928 or 1929 or 1930. I know some of his family in Canada, and would appreciate any information someone might have. - Thank you - RChapple.
Hello, I'm researching the Brown family (Nicholas, in particular) and have found that there was a Nicholas who was the great-grandson of John Brown (1630-~1706) and Mary Holmes (d. ~1690), she being the daughter of Obadiah Holmes who was born in 1607 in Preston, England. John and Mary Brown lived in Providence, RI in the 1600's/early 1700's. There is also an Obadiah Brown, Jr. mentioned as being one who refused to partake in the Gnaddenhutten massacre of the Christian Moravian Indians in 1782 in the PA/WV area. Obadiah Jr. had a great-nephew named Col. J. T. Holmes who was a prominent attorney in Columbus, OH. I also have a Nancy Whitaker (1760-1829) who married a James Holmes (dates unknown) who is buried in the Holmes-Wells Cemetery in Licking Co., OH. And another ancestor of mine was Catherine Brown (1799-1876, Licking Co., OH) who married Eli Holmes, Sr. (b. 3/1/1795, Washington Co., PA-d. ??, Zanesville, Muskingdom, OH) Does anyone on this list have these ancestors? Any information would be greatly appreciated. I have very little on this branch, but would be glad to share anything I can. Thanks! Rita (Brown) Werner Taylorville, IL

Posted on: HOLMES Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/h/o/HOLMES/queries/80 Surname: HOLMES ------------------------- Seeking information about children of Samuel HOLMES of the North Parish of New London (later Montville), New London County, Connecticut. Baker's "History of Montville" states that he was born ca 1722, died ca 1774. He married Lucretia ____ and had eleven children of which five are named: Prudence, Jabez, Elisha, Samuel, Nathan. You know you are taking genealogy too seriously if.... You are the only person to show up at the cemetery research party with a shovel. To put the "final touches" on your genealogical research, you've asked all of your closest relatives to provide DNA samples. Your house leans slightly toward the side where your genealogical records are stored. You decided to take a two-week break from genealogy, and the U.S. Postal Office immediately laid off 1,500 employees. Out of respect for your best friend's unquestioned reputation for honesty and integrity, you are willing to turn off that noisy surveillance camera while she reviews your 57 genealogical research notebooks in your home. The armed security guard, however, will remain. You plod merrily along "refining" your recently published family history, blissfully unaware that the number of errata pages now far exceeds the number of pages in your original publication. During an ice storm and power outage, you ignore the pleas of your shivering spouse and place your last quilt around that 1886 photograph of dear Uncle George. The most recent document in your "Missing Ancestors" file is a 36 page contract between you and Johnson Billboard Advertising Company. Ed McMahon, several t.v. cameras and an envelope from Publishers Clearing House arrive at your front door on Super Bowl Sunday, and the first thing you say is, "Are you related to the McMahons of Ohio?" "A Loving Family" and "Financial Security" have moved up to second and third, respectively, on your list of life's goals, but still lag far behind "Owning My Own Microfilm Reader." A magical genie appears and agrees to grant your any one wish, and you ask that the 1890 census be restored. Ordinarily, I discourage jokes on the list, but occasionally, such as now, one just has to be shared. If you all find one as good as this, by all means post it. But be sure and label it, so people who don't want a chuckle that day can delete without reading. Jude ****** Judith B. time again to post my Holmes-in case some new people have come online looking for Garnett Holmes- born 1770s- Va. married Sarah ? born 1780- Va- their last two children were Lawson B. Holmes and James Holmes- born early 1800s in the Carolinas. we figure there were others but married and left home before any census info was required. also think that Garnett is a middle name as he does not appear on any records before the Ga land lottery. Great to hear this. It certainly looks plausible that we're looking at the same couple. Unfortunately the information you have matches so well with the gaps in mine, and vice versa, that I don't think we have definite proof yet! Nearly all I have on Samuel and Lucretia comes from Henry A. Baker, "History of Montville, Connecticut", published by Case, Lockwood, and Brainard (Hartford, Connecticut, 1896), pp. 327-332. See <http:/web.syr.edu/~rsholmes/genealogy/montvilleholmes.html> for a transcription. Samuel wes b. ca. 1722 and d. ca. 1774. Samuel's wife's maiden name isn't known to Baker. She was b. ca. 1727 and d. 20 Sep 1820. Of eleven children only five are named, none of them Lucretia: Prudence, Jabez (b. ca. 1748, m. Lydia HARRIS), Elisha (b. ca. 1756, m. Sarah HARRIS), Samuel (b. ca. 1763, m. Lucy _____), and Nathan. I've recently learned of a quote from an OTIS genealogy, Otis Family in Provincial and Revolutionary Massachusetts, John W. Walters Jr.; "Colonel James OTIS, born June 26, 1751 at Montville, Conn., near New London, married first, Sept 12, 1770, at Stafford, Conn. Sarah Holmes, daughter of Samuel Holmes of Montville. She was born Oct 20, 1753, and died Feb 156, 1821, at Westfield, Mass., and was a descendant of Richard Warren, who came to America in the Mayflower." Baker tentatively assigns as parents of Samuel "Elisha Holmes and Sarah Bartlett, daughter of Joseph Bartlett of Plymouth, Mass." However, as pointed out by Robert L. Ward, "Unfortunately the will of Elisha HOLMES, which names living and deceased children, does not mention any son Samuel." Elisha did have a son also named Elisha, though, who also married a Sarah BARTLETT! (A cousin on his mother's side). That Elisha and Sarah did have a son named Samuel, b. 26 Jun 1722 in Plymouth, Massachusetts, d. bef. 19 May 1779. (See <http://www.gendex.com/users/hhadaway/harry/fam00493.htm>). Since Samuel named a son Elisha and had a grandson named Bartlett this link looks plausible. The elder Elisha was indeed a descendant of Richard WARREN, for whatever that's worth. There is a plausible, but not proven, line for me back to a Nathan HOLMES, b. ca. 1767 in Connecticut, with hints that he came from Montville; I have been trying for some time to firm up (or refute!) that line and to determine whether this Nathan was in fact Samuel HOLMES's son. Any relevant information would be welcome. Knowing a likely maiden name for Samuel's wife is great; gives me more places to look! What were the names of William and Lucretia's children? Repost of another query sent to the New London County, Connecticut list: Henry A. Baker, in his "History of Montville, Connecticut", also says: This Samuel Holmes was a resident of the North Parish and died about 1774, aged fifty-two years. His will, dated August 4, 1774, names his wife as executor, but does not give her name. He says there are eleven children, and only names one, his daughter Prudence, "who is incapacitated to help herself." Does anyone know where I can get the text of Samuel HOLMES's will? -- - Rich Holmes <hrholmes@mindspring.com> Morris: Thornden (Syracuse, NY), Salt Springs (Syracuse, NY) Genealogy: BELDEN (NY), COLLINS (NY,RI), CURRIER (NY,NH), HANSEN (NY), HAYES (NY,CT), HOLMES (NY,CT), JENSEN (NY), YORK (NY,CT)
Repost of a query sent to the New London County, Connecticut list: Henry A. Baker, in his "History of Montville, Connecticut", says: In the old Salem burying-ground there are several by the name of Holmes whose gravestones appear there. Upon one stone in the group of the Holmeses is the name "Lucretia, wife of Samuel Holmes, Died Sept. 20, 1820, aged 93 years," which shows that she was born about 1727, and would correspond with the age of the Samuel Holmes who purchased land in North Parish in 1749. Does anyone know whether transcripts or records of the cemetery to which Baker refers are available? -- - Rich Holmes <hrholmes@mindspring.com> Morris: Thornden (Syracuse, NY), Salt Springs (Syracuse, NY) Genealogy: BELDEN (NY), COLLINS (NY,RI), CURRIER (NY,NH), HANSEN (NY), HAYES (NY,CT), HOLMES (NY,CT), JENSEN (NY), YORK (NY,CT)
