Hello - I have recently made some progress in tracing my HOLMES line back to Durham, Greene County, NY. My gggg grandfather was Samuel HOLMES, b. 1780 - 1790, married to Rachel [CLEVELAND?]. Samuel had a son Samuel, b. Nov 16, 1812 --my ggg grandfather. 1812 Samuel moved to Broome County, NY and later Allegany county, NY. Samuel Sr. is listed in 1820 Durham with a family of 4 sons and 4 daughters and later in the 1830 census with 2 sons and 1 daughter. I believe one of his sons, in addition to Samuel Jr. was William HOLMES, b. abt. 1810. Has anyone run across any HOLMES lines in Greene County, NY? I would appreciate any information and will gladly share what I've got. Jim Holmes
Does anyone have a Shaunessy (or variation) with their Holmes (any variation) I have an Uncle who told me if I can find a Shaunessy I can find where the Holmes came from. I see and hear the name BUT.. have yet to find an area in Ireland/Scotland or England. Not sure even WHICH it is.. Scottish or Irish or British.. sigh Anyone have any ideas.. always open to suggestions.. thanks Carolyn
Dear Ric, Boy, talk about coincidences, I have a g-g-g-grandfather named Frederick O. HOLMES who was KIA just after the Battle of Resaca, specifically at Pleasant Hill near Adairsville on May 17, 1864. Frederick was from Chicago, Ill and served in the 88th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Was your ancestor Union or Confedrate? I hope they weren't shooting at each other! HOLMES - RICHARDSON - STODDARD/STODDART Hello Listers, My ancestor was Obadiah HOLMES, Jr., (allegedly 1760 - 1834) who married Jane RICHARDSON. They supposedly had 10 daughters and 2 sons. I know of only 2: my gtgtgt grandmother, Mary (Polly), born in 1795, who married John STODDARD, and Shepley Ross HOLMES, Pittsburgh physician. I have found a few items on the Internet about Obadiah; i.e., his and Jane's burial location, the account of the Gnaddenhutten massacre, etc. The Internet is crawling with data on all of the earlier Obadiah's in the Holmes line, but I want to confine my search to Allegheny Obadiah at this time. I would love to hear from any descendants of the Allegheny Obadiah line. Or, if you have information on Obadiah, Jane, or any of his children I would like to hear from you as well. Thanks! Kay

Posted on: HOLMES Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/surnames/h/o/HOLMES/queries/81 Surname: ------------------------- FYI:I found a James Holmes on a Land Record dated 29 May 1780 in Ky. I don't know if he could be a connection to your James L. I am looking for the parents of John Cannon Holmes bn in VA abt. 1790. The above mentioned land sale was part of a VA land grant. That is why I am continuing my pursuit. Good luck.
My ggggrandfather Elijah Holmes (wife Olive Ingalls) was born in Pomfret, CT in 1777 and came to New York about 1800. He settled in West Winfield and that farm is still in our Holmes family today. My line goes: Elijah, Alvah, Augustus Stephen, Allie, Edwin, Me. Is anyone out there related to this line? Would be interested in hearing from you. Lucy Stauring

Hello Rita, My grandmother maiden was Holmes, her father was Robert R. Holmes b. Ky. So I have watch out for the surname Holmes. I have seen the name Odediah Holmes many times in the book First Settlers of Ye Plantations of Piscataway and Woodbridge, Ole East New Jersey, 16664-1714 by Orra Eugene Monnette, for example. from page 147 Staten Island Names Tyson's Creek. Petition of Obediah Holmes for a warrant to survey and lay out a certain piece of land lying in the county of Richmond, adjoining to the land of the petitioner upon the head of Tyson's Creek. Land Papers 1886.(Anthony Tyce, neighbor to Peter Minne, 1686) page 143 While the following lists is not complete, the names tablulated here either themselves removed to New Jersey or sent members of their own families to the new locations before 1714. Obadiah Holmes Abraham Lutine James Bollen Hope this will help you. Gregory Charles Loudon Bourland
