My brick wall is Thomas HOLMES born 1785 in NYC. Cannot find anything on his parents and/or siblings... altho' Simeon Holmes of Wethersfield, CT seems to be the most likely candidate. Need proof he was Simeon's son to establish connection to Francis Holmes of Stamford, CT. Have looked _everywhere_ and still nothing... Thomas married Eunice DEMAREST abt 1811 in Brooklyn, Kings Co., NY; then relocated to NYC (Manhattan) where all seven of their children were born... He died there in 1863. Does anyone know if land records would be any help? Taxes? Mortgage? I am at a loss as to where to go from here. Suggestions anyone? Thanks... 1. [HOLMES] Rev. Wm. Holmes, SC, prob. Fairfield, mid 1800s
    2. Bruce Cardner
    3. Sarah A. Holmes married Rev./Dr. William E.Collier in 1840 in SC, probably the Broad River district. Their daughter, Mary Collier McKay, died at age 21 in Tampa, Florida. Her obituary gives us the name of her grandfather: (From Death and Obituary Notices from the Southern Christian Advocate 1867-1878): Issue of February, 1869: "Mrs. Mary M. McKay, daughter of Dr. William E. Collier---present Presiding Elder of the Tampa District, and grand daughter of the late Rev. William Holmes of South Carolina, died in Tampa, Florida, aged 21 years. Seldom has it been our lot to chronicle a death so sudden and sad, so melancholy and lamented. She was, from a child, a consistent and devoted member of the M. K. Church, South. As a Christian, her life was religion illustrated. As a child she was dutiful, making the happiness of her parents, brothers and sisters the study of her life. The affection she bore to her mother was wonderful; it was devoted and intense; it was indeed an unquenchable and undying flame. As a wife, her heart revolted at the idea of imperfection in her devoted husband. Her love to him was blind, a sea without a shore or bottom; a vestal fire that will know no going out. It was kindled on earth; it will burn through eternity. She was not suited for this world. The rude shocks of life would soon have crushed her. God thought it best to take her early to himself; so the angel messenger came, and carried her to Heaven. As Thou, O Father hast done it, so we lie in the dust of humility and silent submissiveness before Thee, and meekly utter, "Thy will be done." Farewell my sweet niece Mary, until we "gather at the River." F. A. Holmes >From this we see that Rev. William Holmes, probably from the Fairfield district of SC, had at least one daughter, Sarah, one son, F. A. Holmes. I believe he may have had a son, Joseph, also, but I can not prove this. Sarah's obit states that he was a "local minister", and I associate that term with the Methodist Church. If anyone recognizes this family, please contact me. They have been difficult to research. My Colliers were originally from King and Queen County, VA, but I know nothing more about the Holmes. If indeed, Rev William DID have a son, Joseph, he could also have been a ME Minister. Best to all on the list. Sydney Cardner (the Sydney is female) Florida

    3. The sight you mentioned was recently kicked off one server, and is nothing more than a pay index of genealogy sites created by others. The guy has links to TWO of my pages, WITHOUT my permission (links should be free, but he's charging to let others use it, so I want to charge him for having it on his site). That's what I know about the guy. If you want to use a free site, go to cyndislist.com and use it! It's the same thing, and is FREE. She was b 9 Sept 1881 in Reeve, Franklin Co., IA as Mulkins; m 16 Oct 1900 to A C Sweeney in Hampton, IA, whom she divorced after the birth of two children: Beulah in 1903 and Clair in 1906; m a second time about 1920 to Charles Randall Hofmann with whom she left IA and moved to Chicago and whom she also divorced about 1923; m a third time to Harold Holmes of Chicago in the1940's and went with him to a Seventh Day Adventist parish in Palestine, Anderson Co., TX, where she died about 1955. Harold Holmes was reputed to be a faith healer, called " Dr Holmes" and was thot to have divorced or left a wife named Nora and child in Chicago. The church in TX does not answer me, and there seems to be no death record of Maud in TX-- altho my cousin attended the funeral and saw her buried in TX! Appreciate anything anyone can offer me on this woman who is a paternal grandparent. JoAnn

This is embarrassing to admit, but I appear to have lost about four or five months worth of email messages from my Hold folder last night. I still haven't figured out the details of what happened. It appears the folder contents were deleted as I exited my email program. I received no indication of any problem at the time This would all be merely inconvenient and annoying except for the fact that that I then updated my backup copies of my message archive before becoming aware of the loss.. Mind you, I'm a 'belt and suspenders' kind of guy when it comes to maintaining my email archives. I have messages that date back twenty years in that database and I've gone to some lengths to retain them. I keep synchronized working copies of the archive on both my desktop and my laptop machines and I regularly update two complete sets of copies on different hard drives on my desktop machine. In addition, at longer intervals, I write a copy to CD-ROM. In the present instance, I seem to have lost the contents - about 4000 to 5000 messages from my Hold folder. That's the folder where I have been collecting genealogically oriented messages both sent and received from the archive with a view to wading through them one message at a time and acting upon them as needed - updating my genealogical database, corresponding with the sender, updating my address book, what-have-you. We won't discuss the number of man-hours I've expended in the last month wading through my entire database of approximately a hundred thousand messages to identify those messages and move them to the Hold folder for more considered review and action. I can go to my CD-ROM to recover all the more dated messages. The problem is that the CD-ROM was last written in June. That means that all the genealogically oriented messages (naturally the ones I least wanted lose!) since June have gone to that great bit-bucket in the sky where all good little bits and bytes go when they die. Just coincidentally, it also appears that I have suddenly acquired some problems with the hard drive on my laptop - the machine where I was working when the folder contents 'went away.' I've been running Norton Disk Doctor on it, but there appears to be some kind of problem with the directory structure and possibly the fat table on the C: partition. That's computer-speak for "I may have to re-format that entire drive and start over - meaning re-install Windows, re-install all my software, copy several gigabytes of data files from across the network, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera." In the interim, whilst I'm diagnosing, repairing and what-not, I call upon the goodness of your hearts to retransmit any messages you sent to me or that I sent to you between 1 Jun 2000 and 15 Oct 2000. I realize that most of you are not compulsive email collectors like I am, but please check your folders for me. Your Sent folder will probably retain any messages you sent to me and the Deleted folder may contain any messages from me - assuming you are not one of those folks that habitually deletes the contents of those folders before exiting your email program. -- Robert W. 1. [HOLMES] Email messages lost
    2. Robert W. King
    3. Hi folks! 1. [HOLMES] What Holmes ?
    2. Do you have any first names ? I am looking for the place in England that Thomas Holmes was born in 1829 to John Holmes and Hattie Cross. I have the same problem, I have no idea where in England he came from. He came to Michigan. So he could have come to New York, west to Pennsylvannia and across Ohio to Michigan.
