Hi Holmes experts...I am a Holmes in Kansas, 57 years old, and know virtually nothing of my heritage or ancestors...I know that my Father was Woodrow Wilson Holmes who grew up in Stafford County Kansas, and died at the age of 48 at Pratt, Kansas in 1962. My mother was Elizabeth May Holmes (Dark) and she died in 1995 at the age of 80, also in Pratt, Kansas. My Grandfather on my Father's side was James Nathan Holmes, who died in the 1950's in St. John, Kansas. He was married to Bertha May till her death in the late 40's or early 50's. My Grandfather on my mother's side was Jethro "Jeff" Dark, who was married to Blanche Dark (Bond) They also lived their later lives in Stafford County, Kansas. I believe most of my Grandparents traveled to Kansas from Missouri and/or Illinios in covered wagons back around the late 1800's or around the turn of the century....I would appreciate anyone helping me to learn of my lineage back to where we all came here from if possible. I'm going about this in a round about way, but bare with me... Priscilla TURNER was born about 1750 in Brunswick County, VA and died 26 March 1820 at Columbia, SC. She married Timothy RIVES 20 March 1772. The parents of my Priscilla TURNER "may" be Jacob TURNER who was born in Southampton Co., VA and died about 1813 in Southampton, VA. He married Mary Anne BLUNT in 1754. The parents of this Jacob TURNER "may" be Solomon TURNER who married Patty or Polly HOLMES 2 January 1708 in Southampton, Virginia. I know that Priscilla TURNER is my ancestor, but I'm not sure about the rest. Unfortunately, I didn't write down my source for this info on her ancestors - I "penciled" it in. The list has been quiet, but I need a new generation of Holmes kin for Christmas; any help appreciated. Earliest sighting of my James Shadrach Holmes is his marriage, ~1810 to Keziah Cox of Augusta, Richmond County, GA and Edgefield District, SC. The Columbia Co. GA newspaper listed a Shadrack Holmes as having a letter to pick up in 1799, but no proof this is my Shadrach. Many of us believe James Shadrach to be a son of either Gideon or Richard Holmes of Habersham County GA, but again, no proof! From where did this man spring? James Shadrach Holmes and family were in Conecuh Co. L prior to 1820, and in Butler Co. AL by 1824, slowing working westward where they settled in Rankin Co. S sometime during the 1840's. It appears they had a brief stop in Kemper Co. S on the way. James and Keziah Holmes had 13 children: Sarah A., Jane, Martha, George Washington, Ellen, William Decatur, Keziah, Josiah, Amanda Frances, Abigail Mary, James Shadrach, Jr., Edward Hillary, and Blanton Wilcox Holmes. James Shadrach remarried after Keziah's death in 1852, to Frances P. Howard, and fathered one child, Ada Frances Holmes. Lots to share downward, but this man remains lonely for a birth family. Holmes, died at his home in Lancaster, Thursday, December 14, 1916 from Bright's disease. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the M. E. Church, with Rev. Guy Campbell officiating. He had reached the age of 64 years, 7 months and 4 days. Mr. Holmes was born May 10, 1852, at Franklin, New Hampshire and in 1871 he came to Grant county and settled in Lancaster, where he was a carpenter by trade. In 1873 he was united in marriage to Eliza Dempsey of Fennimore, and to this union were born four sons, namely Glen, Thomas, Frank and Harry, and they with their mother are left to mourn their father's death.
