Posted on: HOLMES Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/surnames/h/o/HOLMES/queries/10120 Surname: Holmes ------------------------- Looking for father or family of Charles Bradner Holmes b c1835 in Ohio, was a homeopathic physician in Chicago in mid-1800's, died c 1895. I would like to know who his parents were, and have had no luck tracing them so far. Charles B was my grandfather, never knew him, have found his name on list of medical students at Hahneman Medical College in OH, lost track after that.
The following obit is of our grandmother, wife of Manasseh Holmes, dated Wednesday, Jan. 9, 1889 from "The Coos County [NH] Democrat," Lancaster, NH: "Jefferson" "Life's Work Ended" Mrs. Manassah (Perkins) Holmes, of Jefferson Mills, NH, who died Dec 30, 1888, was born in Middleton, NH, 1802. She married in 1818, Manassah Holmes. He died about ten years ago. They lived in Newdenham [sic], Middleton and Farmington, NH, and about 1830 moved to Jefferson, NH. She had two brothers, both of whom are now dead. One was the father of Hon. N. R. Perkins, of Jefferson, NH. They had twelve children: six sons and six daughters. Two sons, Charles S., of Pittsburg, NH, and George R., of Jefferson, NH, survive her; also three daughters: Mrs. A. J. Taylor, of Northumberland, NH, Mrs. James Merrow, of Lancaster, NH, and Mrs. B. F. Blodgett of Jefferson, NH, with whom she lived. The home where she died had been owned and occupied by them, most of the time, for more than forty years. For many years she was a member of the Baptist Church, of Jefferson. She was possessed with a very social disposition. She enjoyed company, both old and young. In her later life, her Bible was always near her. She loved to talk of its precious teachings, and of her hopes of the better life beyond the earthly grave. Her health remained quite good, and her faculties but little impaired, until the accident which caused her death. At about eight p.m., December 26th, she opened the cellar, instead of the hall door, falling to the cellar bottom. She was fully conscious for twenty-four hours, talking freely with her children, and many friends who called, giving her last words of counsel, and sending last messages of love to absent ones. Her daughters, and one son, had the great satisfaction of being with her, and ministering to her comfort, until the lamp of life went peacefully out on Sunday morning, Dec. 30th, 1888. Although severely briised, no bones were broken by the fall. Death was caused by paralysis, produced by the shock to her system. On the morning of the New Year, a large number gathered at the schoolhouse at Jefferson Mills, to pay their last respects to the memory of one so long and so well known in our midst. About seventy-five relatives were present. The sermon was delivered by Rev. James Crowly, from words selected by the deceased (2d Cor. v. 1): "For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens." The sermon was largely an eulogy of the deceased, based upon a personal acquaintance of several years of her later life. The pall bearers were Benjamin R. Kennison, Freeman Orcutt, L. R. Dexter and Isaac Johnson. Her remains were tenderly laid beside those of her husband, in the cemetery in Jefferson Mills [NH]. Does anyone connect to the Holmes families of Strafford County, NH, or those who migrated to Coos County in northern NH?

Hello List, I have found, listed in the Edwards Funeral Home Records Book, a funeral record for: Corbit HOLMES, b. June 23, 1895, d. Feb 5, 1982 It says that his fater was William HOLMES and his mother was Lela FLOWERS. Then, in another funeral Home records book (I failed to take note of the name of it, but will go back next week and get that), I found listings of 2 children for the above. Please notice that I'm spelling the name EXACTLY as it is spelled on the records: Billy Roy HOLMES, b. Mar 3, 1939, d. May 7, 1960 (father--Corbett Holmes, mother--Mildred Shults) (says he was single) Donald Ray HOLMES, b. Apr 10, 1942, d. Dec 16, 1942 (father--Corbat Holmes, mother---Mildred Shults) **I find it intersting just how often the given name has been mis-spelled!** Ok, I know that these folks are connected somehow with my HOLMES line, but just not sure yet. The reason for the big question, is that the name of Corbit is a new one to me. I have not run across it before this. If anyone on this list has any info, as to who these people belong to, please contact me!! Thanks for the time, Pam

Survivors include a daughter, VIRGINIA SOUTHWORTH of Springfield; a son DONALD of Butte Falls; six grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren. Visitation will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 535 66th Street, in Springfield. I HAVE NO FURTHER INFORMATION. HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE. Arlene
In most of the census records I have found under relationship it will note if the child were adopted or a boarder or a child, etc. I've got two kids who were adopted from the 1870s. No matter what age a child is, the adoptive parents can change a child's name to whatever they want. Often if the child is old enough, s/he may have had some input as well. Adoptions are maintained in probate records. It really depends on the location as to what is available... genealogy research is NOT a valid reason to open sealed records. Your best bet would be to check the LDS Family History Library Catalog and search under the county... you will then take a peek under probate... and you want to order the film that would maintain the listing for Holmes and/or Morgan (could be one, or two films)... it should note if there was an official court action. If so, then you want to order the actual film of the probate records according to the record number... you may or may not get any information... On the two that I received, they had a big sticker indicating "CONFIDENTIAL MATERIAL" but it will give you an idea of time-frame an adoption was completed (checking the files before and after)... or you may receive an entire file. Also, if you find something in the catalog that indicates Probate Calendar.... you may want to check that out as well. I'm sorry, but I must interject my opinion... Francis would be both a Holmes and a Morgan (I know this is contrary to many in regard to lineage societies), as an adoption worker, I've witnessed many.... the judge always tells the parents "this child becomes yours as though s/he were born to you, including all rights of inheritance." Happy searching!
