    1. [HOLMES] HOLMES in Lane County, Oregon
    2. I'm looking for descendants of, or information about, Charles Jeremiah and Lillian Frances Phillips HOLMES. Lillian is the daughter of my ggrandfather John Fearney PHILLIPS and his second wife, Adaline GRAVES. I don't know if she had any siblings. I don't know who Charles HOLMES' parents were. Charles Jeremiah HOLMES and Lillian Frances PHILLIPS were probably married about 1908. They were living in Springfield, Lane County, Oregon in 1920. I have the census page with their names at the bottom, but don't have the next page with their children's names. Other information indicates the children are Kenneth Ivin (1909-1973), Florence (1911-1973), Irene Agnes (1914-1980), and Lorraine (1922-1989). There are other children who as far as I know are still living. I'm not including their names or birthdates since I don't have their permission (or even know them). I don't know who Charles Jeremiah HOLMES' parents were. Lillian PHILLIPS was born 23 Oct 1890 in Sauk City, Skagit County, Washington. On the 1920 census she is listed as 29 years old. Charles HOLMES is listed as 30 years old, born in Oregon, father born in Maine and mother born in U. S. Charles' occupation is listed as farmer. They are in Enumeration District 261, Precinct 4, Springfield City, page 4a. What looks like "J Street" is written in the margin of the census page. My ggrandfather John F. PHILLIPS left his first family in Arkansas (my ggrandmother and their 3 sons, including my grandfather) sometime between 1870 and 1880. He and Adaline were in Washington State by at least some time in the 1890s. John is said to have died about 1900. I don't know when Adaline and Lillian moved to Oregon, or when or where Lillian met Charles J. HOLMES. Some evidence indicates that Lillian probably left Washington while still a child. Very little (actually nothing) is known about this branch of the family because my grandfather was so bitter about his father leaving his mother he refused to talk about him. He even forbade his brothers to ever talk to his children about his father. I was told that they accidently found out about John PHILLIPS' second family. My grandfather was very upset and told his children not to try to talk to him about it or try to contact the other family. One of his daughters managed to find out where they were anyway, and contacted someone ("one of the boys," according to another aunt), who immediately got on a bus and came to see them (in Oklahoma, I think), not knowing how my grandfather felt. When the daughter found out her was coming she had to tell her father. He told her to meet the bus, take care of him and send him back, he didn't want to see him or hear anything about him. As far as I know, no one from my grandfather's family tried to contact anyone in ggrandfather PHILLIPS second family again. Until now, at least. Now that you know more than you ever wanted to know about my Phillipses -- Does anyone know this HOLMES family? I would really like to find some descendants in this branch of the family and fill in some gaps. It would be nice to meet some new cousins and try to mend this family. Jo Holsinger Virginia

    2. Have nothing currently on the HOLMES family, but have a child named Lazarus HOLMES MCELHANEY. His middle name is supposedly the last name of his mother. I have him born March 1844 in Allegheny City, PA. He may have had a sister name unknown and a brother John, nothing known about him. Anyone having HOLMES / MCELHANEY lines that merger somewhere in Western PA (Allegheny/Armstrong Counties) it would be good to share information with you. Thanks Dennis

    2. Lesley Whitla
    3. Well here goes for me. This is an Aussie HOLMES that I wish had someone related out there. Robert Holmes married Alice Ryan (mother nee O'Neill) abt. 1835 at Glenn Rock in NSW Australia. Anything before this time is my brick wall. I don't have a ship or place from which he hails. His death cert. had UNKNOWN all over it. There is no grave to even mark his resting place. Alice's death cert. had the information that they were married at Glenn Rock but no record to this date has been found of this event. Their children's names were William, Robert, Thomas, George, Charles, Elizabeth and Jane. There were three other children who don't have names yet as they died at infancy. Robert would have been born abt. 1805 to 1815 (I think). This is my long shot. Any help here would be wonderful. Lesley Whitla (nee Holmes) >From Sunny North Coast New South Wales, Australia.

    1. [HOLMES] Henry J HOLMES b.ca 1835 ILL or NY>TX
    2. Penny Dennis Holmes
    3. HI I continue to try to find any lead, clues, thoughts or ideas on my Henry J. HOLMES Possible associated names: COBB, BRAINERD, SLAYBACK I have Henry HOLMES in: 1860 Galveston Co TX, living with Francis R COBB: COBB, F R 74 magistrate 4000 5000 England ,Elizabeth 61 England ,Pauline 11 Texas HOLMES, H. 27 brickmason NY ,Mary 26 Ohio ,Henry 6 ILL? ,Howard 3 ILL? ,Donsena? 4/12 female Texas 1870 Harris Co (Houston ) Texas: HOLMES, Henry J. 35 brickmason NY ,Julia 23 GA ,Frank (Frank Henry) 15 "printing" Ohio? ,Howard 13 ILL ,Edwin J. 7 TX ,Clara 4 ILL Kramer, Phillip 32 Laborer Vermont ,Frank 26 Blksmth Vermont It appears that Mary, wife of Henry HOLMES, (might be Sarah Marie BRAINERD/BRAINARD- record in St. Louis MO- has Sarah Marie Brainerd marriage to Henry HOLMES on 12/26/ 1853) Appears that she died between 1866 and 1868. Also possible that this Mary was Mary SLAYBACK--per another cousin family story. I have found no record of a marriage of Henry HOLMES and a SLAYBACK. This SLAYBACK line was from ILL and Ohio. In 1866 there was a child born (Clara) , and in 1868 Henry Holmes remarried a Miss Julia SMITH in Harris County, Texas. 1880 Harris Co TX: HOLMES, H. 46 ILL ILL ILL ,Julia 32 LA ,Ed 16 Texas ,Clara 14 TX ,Jessie 2 TX ,Virg (Virginia) 3/12 Tx Likely that there is some connection with the Francis R COBB that they are living with in 1860 Galveston Co Tx..and maybe with the BRAINERD or SLAYBACK lines... (if Mary is the Sarah Marie Brainerd who married Henry Holmes in St. Louis MO in 1853) I "think" that I might be chasing the Joseph HOLMES and Johnna KINGSBURY line--parents of Sibyl HOLMES who marr. Jonathan COBB in 1798 in Norfolkd Co MA...but..not sure. I am not sure about all this, but it looks like Jonathan COBB and Sibyl HOLMES had a daughter named Amelia Sibyl COBB who married Jesse HOLMES and this Jesse and Amelia HOLMES "might" be the parents of my Henry HOLMES. Love any help, ideas, thoughts, anything ...I have more info on the line after 1880 in Texas if anyone is interested. Thanks so much Penny

    1. [HOLMES] Norval Henry HOLMES & Julia COLLINS (PA/TX/??)
    2. Martha W. Little
    3. Norval Henry HOLMES married Julia COLLINS in 1883 in or near Austin TX. Would like to know what became of them and any children that they may have had. Norval Henry HOLMES was born 6 Dec 1863 in Pittsburgh, Allegheny Co, PA, to father Norval HOLMES and mother Elizabeth (surname unknown). Father Norval died in 1875 in Pittsburgh and Elizabeth and her remaining children move to the Bexar Co TX area in time for the 1880 Census. Norval Henry had two sisters - Nettie born about 1858 who married Thomas ROBERSON in San Antonio in 1886 and Sarah born 1865 who married James Marion MCCASKILL in 1881. We have been unable to find information on Norval Henry past his marriage date, though it might be possible that he and his family were still in TX for the 1900 Census and later. 1. [HOLMES] Sarah A. Holmes Collier, 1816-1886, SC>GA>FL
    2. Bruce Cardner
    3. I guess I will post my Holmes again. Sarah A. Holmes, 1816-1886. SC>GA>FL This obituary was found by a very nice lady at the Lee County Genealogical Society. All she asked for her time was an optional donation. She spent a lot of time looking at old microfilms, and kept in touch by email the whole time. Thanks to her for finding such an old obituary. May 8, 2001: Received the following obituary from the Ft. Myers Press, Ft. Myers, Florida. "Mrs. Sarah A. Collier, departed this life, August 20th, 1886. She was 71 years old. She was the daughter of Rev. Wm. Holmes of the M. E. Church South. Forty-four years ago(should read 46) , she was married to Rev. W. E. Collier, whom she leaves with four children to mourn her departure. She joined the M. E. Church South when but 12 years old, in which she lived a consistent, faithful member to the day of death. She was ill about six weeks, during which time she suffered much, but trusting in Jesus she bore all with patience. She died without a struggle, or a frown, but with a pleasing smile, seemingly to say, it is all over, meet me in heaven. May the great head of the church, our heavenly father, bless and comfort the loved ones bereaved." A. E. Householder The Rev. Householder mentioned above was the pastor at Ft. Myers United Methodist Church in 1886. Rev. Dr. Collier, Sarah's husband, was pastor there in 1880-81. Sarah Holmes Collier also had a brother, F. A. Holmes, who wrote the obituary of the couple's daughter, Mary Collier McKay of Tampa. Her husband died only 2 months later. I have his obit from the ME Church. A memorial service was held at the church for him according to a Ft. Myers Press article. I have been unable to get further info about Rev. Holmes. I suspect he would have been in the Winnsboro, Fairfield area of SC about 1840, as that is where Dr. Collier was located by the church records in that year of their marriage. I believe he must have been a local pastor, as the church does not have records of a Wm. Holmes in that area. Still hoping to figure out the F. A. Holmes and find other descendants of this family. Sydney Cardner (the Sydney is female)

    1. [HOLMES] Luke Hamilton or Rollo Holmes
    2. B Holmes
    3. Posted on: HOLMES Queries Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/surnames/h/o/HOLMES/queries/10148 Surname: HOLMES ------------------------- On 18 April 1983 Emily Holmes Raney (Mrs. Gordon Raney) Address 131 5 E. Main Street, New Albany, Indiana 47150 sent a letter in answer to a query about a unrelated Holmes family of Indiana. She said, "I don't not know whether you and I could have any common ancestors or not, but I will tell you what I know of my earliest one, of which I have any knowledge." She went on to explain that Luke Hamilton Holmes "was her great-great grandfather." She explained that Luke had a brother "Rollo, or Rolly" and that the two brothers were mentioned in an obituary she had "from a Jeffersonville, Indiana newspaper at the time of Rolly's death, as having come from Culpepper, VA." She said, "It says in the article [obit] that they lost their parents early, and eventually arrived in Jeffersonville, Ind. as very young men, coming by way of Wheeling. They must have stayed in Wheeling awhile, and maybe my G.G. grandfather even married there, as the page of births in his own bible, list several children born before the other two marriages that took place in Clark Co. (Jeffersonville), of which I have his marriage certificates." She also explained that Luke Hamilton Holmes had children by both wives, "the children's births are also recorded in the bible." "He left my great-great grandmother and his four children by her and left Jeffersonville for Missouri, where it has always been said he left to live with a child or children by a former marriage. My own grand-father, the son by this marriage, was only four years old. From then on the trail is lost, as I do not think they ever heard of him again." "I am not so concerned as to what happened to him, as I am as to who his parents were in Culpepper. I know he was born in 1824. Since his middle name was Hamilton (and he was called Hamilton in the family) I keep wondering if his mother's name could have been Hamilton before she was married to a Holmes." "In the children of my G.G. grandfather's children listed in the bible there is a William Wesley Holmes whose birth is listed as May 11, 1845." "I do not know where Luke Hamilton Holmes is buried, but it is assumed he is buried in Missouri, since that is where he went after leaving his family." She mentions her father had also searched for Luke Hamilton Holmes and thought because President Truman's Holmes line was from Utica that perhaps Luke Hamilton and Rollo were somehow related to that line also. She mentioned Luke Hamilton was a cooper, or barrel maker in Utica, Indiana. She also thought she should maybe look in Wheeling, WVA for the brothers. She said she was going to enclose a copy of the Holmes Bible page of births that she had, however at the bottom of the page she added, "P.S. - Can't lay my hands on the Bible page at this moment, and would have to go to the Library to get a copy made - so will send this in to-day's mail, and send you a copy of the bible page later, if you think you want it - It maybe of no importance to your line. -" I am NOT RELATED to these brothers or their lines and have no further information on them, but I noticed the query on the HOLMES List and thought this information might help others in making a connection.

    1. [HOLMES] Roger Boone Holmes obituary
    2. lindalee
    3. Roger Boone Holmes died in Butte, Montana on Friday, May 4, following a long battle with cancer. He was born in Butte on June 25, 1929 to Keith Debolt Holmes and Margaret Alice McRobert. His great-grandparents were Wesley Holmes and Elizabeth Debolt of Union City, Indiana. Roger attended Whittier Grade School and graduated from Butte High School in 1947. On September 4, 1948, he married his beloved wife, Edna Marie Fuller. She preceded him in death in 1995. Roger was employed by the Anaconda Company as a miner, truck driver, and draftsman, before going to work for the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology at Montana Tech in 1959. He was cartographic supervisor there until his retirement in 1992. Besides his family, Roger's great love was automobiles. He remember every car he ever owned-and there were hundreds-in vivid detail. As a young man, he raced stock cars at Butana Speedway. In retirement he took up drag racing and enjoyed many dusty Sundays at Lost Creek Raceway. He is survived by his three children and their spouses, Linda Lee Holmes, Mike and Tracy Holmes, Ed and Frances Holmes; and six grandchildren, Mike, Andrew, Ashley, Courtney, and Eddy Holmes, and Patrick Kueffler. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Keith and Mary Lou Holmes; stepsister and husband, Stephany and Jack Lowry; and niece and nephews Laurie Mohney and Richard and Dale Holmes.
