    1. [HOLMES] Sally Laurilla HOLMES, daughter of Reed and Betsy Holmes of Coos Co., NH

    3. Seeking any contacts desiring to share NH HOLMES data. Bob Glidden Sally Laurilla Holmes Jordan Obituary Posted By: Bob Glidden <jbgliden@scican.net> Date: Tuesday, 29 May 2001, at 9:50 p.m. "The Coos County Democrat," Lancaster, NH, Weds., June 19, 1912. The following obituary notice was listed on page 1. "MRS. SALLY LAURILLA HOLMES JORDAN" Was born November 5, 1838, at Jefferson Mills, NH. She was the second child of Reed and Betsey Holmes. She was brought up in the Baptist faith and joined the Baptists Sunday School at Riverton, then Jefferson Mills. In after years she united with the Congregational Church at Lancaster and was a member of that church at the time of her death. For many years she lived in Colebrook in the Kiddersville district, and as there was a Methodist Church in the east part of the town, she made her home there for many years, where she made herself useful both in and out of the church. She was married to Alvan Hibbard January 1, 1880, by Rev. C. E. Sumner. Mr. Hibbard had a daughter by a former marriage, whom she cared for and brought up as her own. In 1898 Mr. Hibbard was called to his heavenly home. For her second husband Mrs. Hibbard married Mr. Jordan, who survives to mourn the loss of so beautiful and helpful a woman. Mrs. Jordan was instrumental in organizing a Sunday School in the Young district near where she lived, and was the superintendent and leader of the work, and in the school a number of now prominent men and women got a large part of their religious training. A mite society and other useful work of this kind was organized by her, including a lodge of the order of Sons of Temperance, of which she was the Worthy Patriarch. She also founded a library, which now owns over 600 volumes of very useful reading. For more than twenty years Mrs. Jordan was the local superintendent of work among lumbermen in the WCTU, and on the statement of Mrs. W. A. Loyne, state and national superintendent, she was the most useful worker of any woman in the local department in any part of the country. The report of her work among the woodsmen is truly remarkable. Through the long winters she traveled to the camps many miles away from home. Many tons of reading matter and hundreds of comfort bags were distributed by her, and many a prodigal boy has received her blessing. She will not soon be forgotten by the men of the woods. "Being dead she yet speaketh." Mrs. Jordan leaves to mourn her loss, besides her husband and daughter, the following brothers and sisters: J. W. Holmes, Groveton; Asa H. Holmes, Holyoke, Mass; Sylvanus Holmes, Lancaster; J. N. Holmes, Lisbon; L. H. Holmes, Norway, Me.; Mrs. Georgiana Jewett, Meadows, NH; Mrs. J. H. Quimby, Island Pond, Vt; Emily W. Winslow, Casco, Me; Mrs. S. C. Howe, Lancaster. The funeral services were held at East Colebrook May 9, in charge of Rev. William Thompson, assisted by Rev. Mr. Frye. Mrs. Thompson rendered several hymns. The world is much poorer because of the home-going of Mrs. Jordan, for she lived for others rather than for herself. Such a life tells for the betterment of the world, and because of her death heaven is richer and more homelike. She is not dead but gone before.

    3. Seeking data on Coos Co,NH, Holmes families. Bob Glidden Georgiana Holmes Jewett Obituary Posted By: Bob Glidden <jbgliden@scican.net> Date: Tuesday, 29 May 2001, at 9:10 p.m. "The Coos County Democrat," Lancaster, NH, Weds. Oct 9, 1912. The following notice was listed in the column for "Jefferson." Mrs. Geogiana, widow of the late William F. Jewett, passed away at the home of her son, George E. Stone, Saturday morning, Sept. 28, after a long illness and much suffering. Funeral services were held in the Meadows cemetery Monday at 2p.m., Rev. T. C. Radoslavoff officiating. Interment took place in Forest Vale cemetery. For many weeks before her death she was in the hospital at Whitefield, where everything was done to make her comfortable. A cure was not expected, as her case was one of the incurables, and only a matter of time when the greatest of all nurses, death, should come to rock her to sleep. She is survived by two sons, George and Frank Stone, and one daughter, Mrs. J. B. Frost, besides several brothers and sisters.

    3. Does anyone have data to exchange on Coos Co., NH, Holmes' families? Mrs. Adelia Holmes Obituary Posted By: Bob Glidden <jbgliden@scican.net> Date: Tuesday, 29 May 2001, at 7:32 p.m. "The Coos County Democrat," Lancaster, NH, Weds. Jan.1, 1913. The following obituary was in the column titled "Jefferson." Last week we made mention of the death of Mrs. Adelia Holmes, who died at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Cleveland Ingerson, in Lancaster, Dec. 18, after a long illness. Mrs. Holmes was born in Jefferson, Aug. 25, 1833, and was practically a life-long resident. Shortly after the death of her husband, about seven years ago, she sold the home place in Stagg Hollow, and since then has visited around among her children, finally going to live with her granddaughter, where she passed her last sickness and finally died. Her maiden name was Summers, and she was a sister of the late William H. Summers, and is survived by a number of relatives of that name, in fact, all of the Summers now living in town, are nephews and neices and their descendants of this estimable old lady. She was married to Hazen Holmes April 9, 1853, and their union was blessed with three children, Mary, Nettie and Lewis. Mary died several years ago, Nettie (Barnett) is still living, with her home in Littlet! on, and Lewis lives in Lisbon. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Earl Barnett, of Littleton, Mrs. Cleveland (Barnett) Ingerson, Mrs. Owen (Barnett) Gainor, and Ruth Barnett of Lancaster, Fred, Lettie, and Chester Holmes of Lisbon, and one great-grandchild, Doris Ingerson. During her illness her two granddaughters in Lancaster made her their especial care, and there was nothing left undone that could lengthen her days or alleviate her suffering. Funeral services were held in Lancaster under the direction of Rev. G. N. Dorr; and her remains were interred in Forest Vale cemetery, Jefferson, where also lie the remains of her husband and daughter. "Lead Kindly Light" and "Abide With Me," two favorites hymns of the deceased, were sung at the funeral, and there was a generous display of cut and potted flowers, all in harmony with the gentle nature of "Aunt Delia" as she was familiarly called.

    3. Does anyone have family data to exchange about Coos County, New Hampshire, Holmes families? Valorus R. HOLMES Obituary DEATH OF MR. HOLMES. Valorus R. Holmes, one of the most distinguished and best known citizens of the North Country, died at his home in Northumberland, early yesterday [June 8, 1909] morning. Mr. Holmes had been in very poor health for six months, and his death has been expected at any time. Bright's disease was the direct cause. Mr. Holmes, who was 61 years of age, was a business man of wide experience, and during the active years of his life conducted extensive operations in lumber and timber. Much of the prosperity of his village was due to his activity. Since the death of his son Harry some two years ago, the latter's wife and child have made their home with him. He leaves a widow, as well as brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held at the residence at 1 o'clock Friday afternoon. "Coos County Democrat," Weds, June 9, 1909. p. 1.

    3. Does anyone have family data to exchange about Coos County, New Hampshire, Holmes families? Harry Reed HOLMES Obituary "Coos County Democrat," Weds., December 4, 1907, p. 1. HARRY R. HOLMES Harry Reed Holmes, only son of Valorus R. and Clara Holmes, whose life came to an untimely end on Nov. 20, 1907, was born in Whitefield, NH, March 16, 1875. A little later his parents moved to Fabyans where they remained eleven years, and it was while living here that he began to attend the academy at Littleton; then they moved to Northumberland and he completed his course at Littleton, going to and from school each day on the train. For the past few years his father's extensive business has been largely in his hands; in conducting it he has won the confidence, praise and respect of his business associates to a remarkable degree. He was a member of North Star Lodge No. 8, A.F.&A.M., North Star Arch Chapter; North Star Commandery; Mt. Sinai Temple Mystic Shrine and Nashua Consistory. He was a great lover of sports. In his daily life he was honest, generous, kind -- a friend, of men in the strongest sense of the word. "Those who knew him best have loved him most" and all were proud to honor and respect him. On Sept. 1, 1906 he married Sarah E. Jordan, and their married life has been one long day dream of happiness -- a dream from which the awakening is sad, indeed, and yet the Reaper has promised that "Though the breath of these flowers is sweet to me, I will give them all back again." To his father and mother he gave a whole-souled love and devotion; a love and devotion that in its expression made the days brighter and their lives happier until they had come to the enjoyment of those he loved. It can truly be said of Harry Holmes that he was happiest when by some unobtrusive act he could add to the enjoyment of those he loved.
