I am looking for my great great grandmother Leonora Holmes, about whom all I know is this: she was born in Natchez, Mississippi, probably around 1835-45; around 1855-65, she married Charles William Pope, probably in Natchez or Second Creek, Mississippi. Of course, any help would be greatly appreciated. Best, Merry Whiteford Merry McInerney-Whiteford is the author of the novels Dog People and Burning Down the House, available at Amazon.com.

Hi, I'm new to this list and I thought I would put my HOLMES into the mix. I am researching Emily Jane HOLMES who was born 1836 in Kentucky. I do not know when she died but it was probably in Henry County, Ky. She married John JONES (B 1836 - D abt 1880) 26 April 1853 in Henry County, Ky. Their children were Phoebe JONES (my great-grandmother) B 5 Dec 1859 in Ky and D 24 Jan 1892 in Ky., Mary E. JONES, Samuel JONES and John E. JONES. All born Henry County, Ky. Emily Jane HOLMES parents were - Thomas HOLMES B abt 1819, possibly in Nicholas County, Ky. I have also found him on the Montgomery County, Ky. Census. Mother was Martha Ann (last name unknown) B 1815 in Ky. Their children were Emily Jane, James W., Louisa J., John, David, Nancy, Albert, Lucy Ann. I believe Thomas HOLMES died before Emily Jane and her children moved to Henry County, Ky. I would love to hear from anyone researching this line and will be glad to share what little information I have. Sincerely, Harriet Oldham (Born in Louisville, Ky. Now living in Georgia)

Researching a Joseph Benjamin Holmes born 1863 Georgia, married 1887 in Bell Co, Tx, lived 1900 Galveston, Tx but by ca 1907 in Tarrant Co, Tx where he and his family remained. His father probably was a James Holmes. Joyce Terrana, Burleson, Tx
Dear Listers, I am hoping you folks can give me a little guidance. Ira Jessie Shepard Holmes was born 17 July 1824 in Chitanago, Madison County, NY. He died 23 July 1916 at Appleton, Outagamie County, WI. On his death certificate his youngest daughter said Ira's father was named John Holmes. Dr. Jack Myers has a family Bible that says Ira's father is Simon. 1) Does anyone have a John Simon or Simon John Holmes in 1820 Madison County, NY? 2) Maybe Ira has a family name as his middle name, and is named after his Grandfather. Does anyone have a John Shepard ( wife named Betsy) in 1820s Madison County, NY? 3) Any other thoughts or directions? Brent
I am searching for Holmes - Roland Augustus Holmes, m. to Minnie A. Turner. Roland was born in Canada in the middle of the the 1800s, came to US, in northern New York state, married Minnie A. Turner, worked as brakeman for the northern run (M&M line?) of the New York Central Railroad. he was killed in a freak accident in the late 1920s - (1928 or 29). He had several sisters and brothers who lived in Ontario, Canada. I would appreciate any info. his first and middle names are rather unusual. There are many Holmses but none seem to be related. Roland A. and Minnie were living in Syracuse,NY when he died. They had two children - James A., and Mildred S. James was my father. The children were born in the 1890s. James died in Utica, NY in the 1970s, and Mildred died in Syracuse at a later date. I know Roland A's brothers and sisters and have some info on his father and grandfather, but there is much more that I would like learn, and I would appreciate any info that anyone might have. Thanks - R.Chapple.

Hi, I'm new to this list. And I'm in some desperate need of any type of help here. I need any leads, links, ect. about the following people. They are my husbands family. Lots of rumors and stories but even the family is not sure of the truths of it. SO any help will be greatly appreciated!!!!!! Here goes .... Clinton Ayse Holmes born abt 1860's to 1870's ?? says he was from Iowa. Married Catherine Doyle right after WW1 she was from Bucks Co. Pa. Full Blood or no less than half Indian - Tribes rumored are Northern Cheyenne ( family speaks this language raised with this culture) OR lol Cherokee, Shoshone ( these are less thought to be correct ) Parents supposed to have died in a train wreck in Iowa. ( no idea of who his parents are, never talked of it) Clinton served in The Spanish- American War( Rough Riders), The Boxer Rebellion, The Phillipines & WW1 Teh military took him to Philadelphia, where he died, died between the ages of 96- 106. He died in 1966. OK now for his son :) John Monroe Holmes Born in 1922 in Philadelphia. Oops, major omission here. I should have mentioned: Eugene A. Stratton, "Descendants of Mr. John Holmes, Messenger of the Plymouth Court", National Genealogical Society Quarterly V. 74 No. 2 p. 83 (1986). I have a copy of only the first few pages, but I'm pretty sure both the Elisha HOLMES/Sarah BARTLETT families are covered. - Rich Holmes
I am searching for descendants of Thomas Holmes and Hannah Suggett born in England. They had 5 Children, Oscar, Henry, George, Dick and Fanny. I am in Oscar's line but would appreciate any information on anyone in this line. Thank you. Chuck Holmes
Several people have written me who are unfamiliar with Gray's book. Let me explain. This book starts with George Holmes who was born in Nazing, England in 1594. He married Deborah and came to this country in 1637, and died in Roxbury, MA Dec. 18, 1645. This book includes all his descendants. I cannot tell you when it was published without going onto the CD but it includes my father who was born in 1900. There is an index of surnames, with given names under them. Lucy

Children were: >Elisha, Elnathan, Jabez, Sarah, Elizabeth, John, Mercy, and Joseph. Just to annoy future generations of genealogists, Elisha and Sarah's son Elisha married a woman also named Sarah BARTLETT! She was a distant relative of the Sarah mentioned above. This Sarah was a descendant of John ALDEN and Priscilla MULLINS, so that family is documented in "Mayflower Families Through Five Generations", Vol. 16 Part 1: John Alden. I'm not sure how much that has on the elder Elisha and Sarah though. The elder Sarah was a great granddaughter of Mayflower passenger Richard WARREN, though, so presumably this family is written up in "Mayflower Families Through Five Generations", Vol. 18 Part 1: Richard Warren. But I haven't checked. These families also appear in "Genealogical and Biographical Record of New London County, Connecticut", J. H Beers & Co. (Chicago, Illinois, 1905) p. 833, though with essentially no documentation. I have a plausible but not proved line back to these Elishas via the younger's (probable) son Samuel HOLMES, who lived in the North Parish of New London, Connecticut (what is now Montville).
I have Gray's book on CD which is the George Holmes lineage. If anyone would like me to do look-ups for them, just e-mail me separately and I would be happy to do that. Lucy
