Welcome to the revamped Holmes Message Board. This board is a merging of the old Holmes GenConnect Boards and the Ancestry.com Holmes message board. You may now post all of your queries and data about the Holmes surname on this one board. When you post a new message, please be sure to find the drop down menu for the classification of the post. The default position for right now is for queries. Hopefully they will change this to "query". Other classifications to use are Bible, biography, birth, cemetery, census, death, deed, immigration, lookup, marriage, military, obituary, pension, and will. By classifying your post correctly, other researchers will be able to search just on wills, obits, marriages, etc. Also please notice the surname box. Please include ONLY the surnames that are included in the message. DO NOT include all of the names you are researching. Otherwise people will find your post in their searches and it won't have anything to do with what they are looking for. Please type the names with a comma and a space inbetween. i.e. Holmes, Homes. Check under "admin info" for messages from your administrator. Once all the glitches are fixed by the management team, this should be a great message board.
I am looking for information on Otis Holmes. His last known residence was Indiana, possibly Buckcreek. This is my grandmother's biological father that she never knew. Any information would be much appreciated.
On the NYMADISO-L list, "S Cook" <sjcmlr54@hotmail.com> wrote: >In the Syracuse paper yesterday there was an article on Brookfield >High School and Katherine Elizabeth Holmes if you did not see the >article, I have it for you. Thanks. The article is online at <http://www.syracuse.com/news/syrnewspapers/index.ssf?/newsstories/20010622_cfhist.html> and talks about the two members of the Brookfield [Madison County, NY] High School Class of 1901. Of one of them the article says in part Katherine Elizabeth Holmes was born Oct. 29, 1880, a daughter of the local Methodist minister, and was 21 when she graduated. She moved to Arcade, in Western New York, married Leslie Spring and had two daughters. A genealogy of the descendants of Seth HOLMES shows Katherine as the eldest child of Harvey L. HOLMES and Hattie R. STILLMAN. To the best of my knowledge this is not my Holmes line (though I can't prove it one way or the other). But I am related to Katherine! Her grandmother (Harvey's mother), Mary Prudence YORK, was a sister of my 2nd great grandfather, Lelen Collins YORK. And the other member of the Class of 1901 was a York! From the York Book, Hal John YORK was a 5th great grandson of Thomas YORK and Mary BROWN. This couple also was great grandparents of Mary Prudence and Lelen YORK, hence Katherine's 3rd great grandparents and my 5th great grandparents. So Katherine and Hal John were fourth cousins twice removed, and I'm related to the entire Class of 1901... - Rich Holmes

Reverend William Holmes, was a "local minister" of the Methodist Church in SC in the 1850's.....perhaps before and after. We do know that he was deceased by 1869, as the obituary of his granddaughter, Mary Collier McKay, in Tampa, Florida refers to him as the "late" Rev. Holmes. We do know he had a daughter Sarah A Holmes, b. SC about 1816. She married Rev./Dr. William E. Collier. They died in Ft. Myers, Florida, in 1886, two months apart. I have both their obituaries, which are very special to me. We also know that Rev. Wm. Holmes had a son F. A. Holmes, who sounds as though he may also have been a minister. He wrote the obituary of Mary Collier McKay in 1869, and he said she was his niece. That is the extent of my knowledge of this man. I am making progress, as I just today found out that he was probably born in Ireland, year unknown, place unknown. I say probably because I found it on the 1880 Lee County, FL census showing as the birthplace of Sarah Holmes Collier's father. If anyone knows the identity of or has other info on the F. A. Holmes mentioned, I would like to know. Sydney Cardner (the Sydney is female)
