You never know when something will help. My maiden name is Durell and my family are in NC from 1771 - 1806 Duplin County. The best friend of John Durell was a Samuel Tanner and he was also expelled from the Quakers because of marriage and the Rev War. Never know.

I am searching for any info on the Phillip HOLMES family. I start with Clara Holmes, b. IL 1869, known ggrandmother, with parents Phillip Holmes and Cynthia Owens. I found Phillip with Cynthia and daughter Clara on Morgan Co. IL 1870 census, but Clara was 3? and Phillip was 24. Through process of supposition, I also found a 1860 census with Palmer Holmes and wife Fanny, Morgan Co. with son Phillip aged 14, and the same family with Phillip aged 5 in the 1850 census for Morgan. Other siblings listed with this family (combining both censuses) are Louisa, Maria, Henry, Emily, Francis, Mary, and Berlinda, with a possible addition of Stephen, who lived next door at the time of the 1860 census. All siblings were born in Illinois. All of these state that Palmer was born in CT, and Fanny was from NY. Do any of these people have ties to someone on the list? If so, I would love to hear from you. Dawn-Moree Dugan
Hi everyone I'm trying to trace both ancestors and descendants of HOLME of Liverpool. I have information back to 1780's and some lines up to the present. If you are interested look at my web page for full details as at present. www.djholme.fsnet.co.uk David Holme Rotherham, Yorkshire. UK

Hello All, I found this listed in the Stewart Co., TN 1850 census. I'm interested in the William HOLMES listed living with this family. I sent a message to someone researching the Brigham family, and he forwarded to someone else. 1850 STEWART COUNTY, TENNESSEE 988 Daniel BRIGHAM 34 m w farmer 500 Tenn Mary 21 f w Tenn Missouria 6 f w Tenn Laura 4 f w Tenn Virginia 3 f w Tenn Mary 5/12 f w Tenn William HOLMES 14 m w Tenn Here's his response: "Holmes in this county lived in the area we now know as White Oak. It was District #11 in 1836, #12 in 1856--same piece of land you understand. That note just might help in further research. Daniel Brigham is listed in the 1850 Census there. A Nathaniel Holmes had 2 sons. He was the son of Albert who died in Nov., 1840 & named Nathaniel in his will. No marriage record was found for Daniel Brigham. That might have shed some light on a possible connection between Brighams/Holmes. " Does anyone on this list know anything about the family he speaks of??? Or, does anyone know anything about the William HOLMES listed in the census??? I'm still trying to find my gg-grandfather, who was William F. HOLMES, b. 1836 in TN. The William listed in this census is just about the right age. Look forward to hearing any responses! Pamela HOLMES Serda
I am desperately looking for my ggg grandfather who migrated to the US in 1858 and was born in Cork, Ireland b. 1831. If you have any info or know where I can get some info let me know please! I am at my wits end. I don't even know where he would have come into the country in 1858. Please help!
Isreal Holmes born 1828 Danube, Herk, NY s/o John Abner Holmes and Charlotte Alida Herkimer.... Isreal married Helen M. Gorton about 1840 Gilbertville, Otsego, NY.... both from <Familysearch.org> International Genealogical Index. Hope that is helpful, C. Day
Someone on the Holmes list asked about what line I'm researching; guess it may be time to post my brick wall to these lists again. My 2nd great grandfather was Hiram HOLMES, b. 2 Aug 1804 in Connecticut. He d. 29 Feb 1864 near Poolville in the Town of Hamilton, Madison County, New York. The only (near) contemporary records I've found of him are entries in the Federal census for 1850 and 1860 (and probably 1840, with the name given as "Ira HOLMES"), New York State census for 1855, his gravestone, and a tracing from a family Bible showing his birthdate. He was near Poolville for those censuses and probably most of his life. No direct information on siblings, parents, or birthplace other than "Connecticut". No record of him in the Barbour collection of Connecticut vital records. Nothing more in Tuttle's "Pioneer Settlers of Madison County" of obvious relevance. There are, however, enough bits of circumstantial evidence to suggest the following is a plausible -- but NOT PROVEN -- account: Hiram was a relative, probably brother, of Henry HOLMES of Vernon, Oneida County, NY and (later) Greenfield, Saratoga, NY. Other probable siblings were Jabez and Nathan HOLMES of Hamilton (Jabez later moved to Hanover, Chautauqua, NY); Phebe WILSON (married name) of Hamilton and North Township, Lake, IN; and Peter HOLMES of Farmersville, Cattaraugus, NY. Peter's father was another Nathan HOLMES (b. 1767) of Hamilton and Farmersville and his mother probably Grace ____ (b. ca. 1771) of Hamilton. Nathan was a child of Samuel HOLMES and Lucretia BILL of the North Parish of New London (later Montville), New London, CT. Samuel was a son of Elisha HOLMES and Sarah BARTLETT of Plymouth, MA and the line goes back from there to the immigrant John HOLMES of Plymouth; other lines go back to Mayflower passengers John ALDEN, Priscilla MULLINS, and Richard WARREN. As I said, none of this is proven. In particular I have no direct evidence that Hiram was brother of Henry, Jabez, Phebe, or Peter; that Hiram's father was Nathan of Hamilton; that Nathan of Hamilton was son of Samuel of New London/Montville; or that Samuel was son of Elisha of Plymouth. There are far too many bits of evidence from too many sources for me to recite them here. If you're interested, more details of this puzzle may be found at my web site, <http://web.syr.edu/~rsholmes/genealogy/index.html> -- follow the "Hiram HOLMES" link. I welcome any information or ideas, and will gladly pass on the information I have to anyone interested. A few particular questions: (1) Is there any primary documentation of Samuel of New London/Montville's family besides his will? (2) Is there any record of Nathan of Montville besides an entry in the 1800 census? (Note there was another, younger Nathan in Norwich, CT.) (3) Is there a death record for Phebe WILSON of North Township, Lake County, Indiana?

Sorry to post this to the list, but when I try to send it direct to Laura it bounces -- apparently jas.net thinks my email looks like spam. I complained to postmaster@jas.net but that got bounced too for the same reason. - Rich Holmes Laura Buckmaster wrote: >I believe I have corresponded with you before. I can't say I see anything to strongly support a connection; on the other hand it's certainly possible. You have the younger Ezra in Oswego and Herkimer counties, which are not too far from Madison county. Essentially all I know about the Ezra I list is shown online. The only information I have comes from the 1870 census population schedule for Hamilton, Madison County, New York, written p. 5, printed page 214: Dwelling # : 40 Family # : 47 Name : Ezra Holmes Age : 34 Sex : M Color : W Occupation : Blacksmith Val. of real estate : 700 Val. of personal est. : 400 Place of birth : New York [Nothing else marked except Males eligible to vote] Name : Almira A. Age : 23 Sex : F Color : W Occupation : Keeping House Place of birth : New York [Nothing else marked] Name : Byron Age : 13 Sex : M Color : W Place of birth : New York [Nothing else marked except In school] Name : Sebor Age : 10 Sex : M Color : W Place of birth : New York [Nothing else marked except In school] Name : Lavina Age : 4 Sex : F Color : W Place of birth : New York [Nothing else marked except In school] [that's what it says in my notes!] Name : Frankie Age : 1 Sex : M Color : W Place of birth : New York [Nothing else marked] I have Byron, Sebor, Lavina, and Frankie shown in my database as children of Ezra and Almira, although of course there's no proof of that in the census and in the case of Byron and Sebor it's virtually impossible. A better guess is that Almira was a second wife of Ezra's and at least the first two children were born of the first wife. Unless Almira's age was really 33, of course... I've examined the Hamilton sections of the New York State census population schedules for 1865 and 1875, and I'm pretty sure this family isn't there. (But these censuses aren't indexed and it's possible I missed it.) Nor is there an Ezra HOLMES in the 1868 Directory of Madison County. So it seems likely he arrived after 1868 and probably had moved on (or died) by 1875. Judging from their non-proximity in the population schedule, Ezra appears not to have been a close neighbor of my ancestors nor any other Holmeses. I have no reason to believe he's connected with my family, although it's possible. Hope this helps... - Rich Holmes

I'm not sure where Marshall Co. is, but I am related to the Holmes' that resided in the Bunker Hill area. My grandmother was Telitha Frances Holmes. Her parents were James Cicero and Winnie Melissa Holmes (Turnage). Some of my grandmothers siblings lived and died in Bunker Hill. Her siblings names were Baxter, Ethel, Carl, Odes, Addison, Jay & Clarence.
