Looking for information on a Charles Tarbell Holmes, born May 22, 1841 in East Pepperell MA, married Dec 24 1867 to Mary Josephine Packard. They passed away in Rockford Illinois. Charles father was Ira Holmes, don't have info on his birthplace, or anything else. Ira married Harriet Newell, who was born in 1810, died Oct 22, 1847. Charles and Mary were my grandfather Frances Herbert Stimax's biological parents. He was adopted on Jan 2, 1888 by the Stimax's of Stillman Valley, IL. Reasons for adoption probably....the family had about 10 children I believe, don't know if Mary had passed away or not when this happened. May have been for financial reasons. I had a copy of adoption certificate. Sharon R White

Is there anyone who can help with this brick wall? Alpheas HOLMES reportedly born in Egremont, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts, probably in the 1740's. Married Adria HURLBUTT on Nov. 8, 1769 in Salisbury, Litchfield Co., Ct. They had five sons: William Joseph James John Daniel, b. Oct. 15, 1781, in Massachusetts. He died on Nov. 20, 1854 in Richmond, Ontario Co., NY. Alpheas is supposed to have lived to the age of 100, "well and harty at the time of his deth wich was caused by a stroke of lightening." Other than the marriage record and military record serving in a Conn. regiment during the French and Indian War, I can find nothing about him. Any leads gratefully received. I do not have very much information on Otis at all. My grandmother never knew him as he left before she was born. He would have probably been born between 1815 and 1825. I am guessing more like 1820. My grandmother (Otis' daughter) Ella Ann Holmes-Perry was born May, 1938. I do not have names of anyone else in his family. I do know that his parents and siblings all lived in Indiana. Please let me know if the Otis Holmes in your family tree was born during this time period. I will try to get more information from my great aunt. Thank you for replying.
The recent flurry of States-side activity prompted the following thought: It would be extremely helpful if everyone prefaced their topic, on the Subject line of the email, with a brief country code: [USA] - for the majority of postings, apparently; [UK] - for England, Scotland, Ireland (including the Irish Republic); [CAN] - for Canada; [AUS] - for Australia; [OTH] - for all OTHers. If the query refers back to immigrants (including roots), this could be indicated as [UK>USA]. In my case, since I am only interested in North-west England, I could quickly delete all non-[UK] postings... One further point of general (?) interest: A week from now (17th July) I will be going to England for two weeks. I intend to spend several days in the Carlisle Records Office (which covers Cumbria), and I will be staying in Durham (with a Records Office for North-east England). I hope to trace my Holmes ancestors back from a confirmed 1791 to a postulated 1573 or so... I already have reams of info on this period, for Cumbria. So, two questions: 1) does anyone out there have information that might be useful for me? 2) does anyone out there have specific queries that I could look up in Carlisle while I'm there? Meanwhile: happy hunting, have a good holiday, kind regards, and so on and so forth ... Paul Holmes
