    3. Does anyone know if there is a URL for a page that lists Samuel Holmes descendants? My g-grandmother was named Lydia Jane Holmes, and according to her death certificate she was born Aug. 1, 1865 in Lock Haven, Clinton Co., PA. to Seth Holmes and Sarah Dora Kennully. I cannot find this family in any census records. Family was sure that the name Lydia was a family name. Any help would be appreciated. Paula Chodacki Almont, MI. 1. ANOTHER DESCENDANT OF REV. OBADIAH HOLMES
    2. Steve Leeper
    3. Hello Holmes Folks, I am the 9X great grandson of the Rev. Obadiah Holmes (1606-1682). I know this by virtue of the work of my great great aunt Mary Leeper Long (1866-1939), who copied a great deal of information out of a Holmes Family Bible sometime between 1930 and 1939. She obtained access to this Bible from a Rezin Holmes of Leesville, OH, and/or from descendants of a Joseph Holmes, brother of her great grandfather Isaac Holmes. I have her handwritten notes from this Bible. In addition to the information obtained via Mary Leeper Long, I am aware of a book entitled "The American Family of Obadiah Holmes." I have not yet run across this book, but I have been given information from it by a "cousin." I have personally found a book entitled "Ancestors and Descendants of William Browning Greene and Mary Hoxie Lewis with Allied Families" by William E. Wright, Gateway Press, Inc., Baltimore, 1993, pages 246 to 249 (Los Angeles Public Library: Call No. R929.2 G799-13), which duplicates and complements the information obtained from Mary Leeper Long. William Wright gives four references: a) Deforest, Brady, pp. 227-236; b) Garman, RI Roots, Dec. 1989, pp. 85-87; c) Wightman, pp. 285-305; and d) Roberts, Anc. Amer. Pres., pp. 29-30. Based on my information, my lineage is as follows. Robert and Alyce Hulme of Manchester, England, had a son named Robert. Robert Hulme married Katherine Johnson and had at least five children: Obadiah, John, Robert, Joan, and Samuel. Obadiah, who became the Rev. Obadiah Holmes (1606-1682), married Katherine Hyde in 1630 and emigrated to America in 1638. They had a son named Johnathan. Johnathan Holmes (1633/34-1712/13) had a son named Obadiah. Obadiah Holmes (1666-1745) had a son named Joseph. Jospeh Holmes (1698-1777) had a son named Obadiah. Obadiah Holmes (1728-1794), who became known as Obadiah the Western Pioneer because he kept moving West, had a son named Issac (and another son named Joseph). Isaac Holmes (1764-1857) had a daughter named Susannah. Susannah Holmes (1805-1893) married Joseph Masters (1799-1890) and had a daughter named Margaret. Margaret Masters (1838-1917) married William Alexander Leeper (1828-1897) and had three children: James, Ernest and Mary (who became Mary Leeper Long). William A. and Margaret Masters Leeper are my great great grandparents; I am descended from Ernest Leeper. I have additional information on many other siblings in each generation, which matches what I have read in the Holmes archives on RootsWeb. I plan to respond to specific messages from the archives in the near future and may be able to provide useful information. Steve Leeper 9X Great Grandson of the Rev. Obadiah Holmes

    2. I have been trying to find parents and the birthplace for my ancestor: Hugh HOLMES or HOMES. Hugh was of Scot-Irish descent and married at Newcastle, ME ca 1762 Mary (widow) HOPKINS. Hugh was a 1st Lieutenant in the Continental Army and also a local militia. I feel his father may have been a Thomas HOLMES who purchased land in what is now the vicinity of Bristol Maine in 1733. Thomas was very probably an emigrant from N. Ireland in the 1718-1730 period. Any help appreciated. thanks, Charles

    3. PLEASE REPLY TO [email protected] Recently I have had two people asking about a Mahala Holmes that lived in Ohio. Her name was Mahala or Mahalia Bryant b 25 Dec 1809 and she married a John Rush b 1807. Our line has a Mahala Holmes b 16 Nov 1819 who married a John Clark Rush b 29 Mar 1814. This is only for everyone's information - They seem to be two different families as John Clark Rush and Mahala never left Lawrence and Greene counties, Indiana. Here is another one in this same vein. Just recently this came over the Holmes e-mail. "Their son Henry Clay HOLMES b. 22May 1835, Kirkersville, Licking, OH, marr. 12Jun1860 in Janesville, Rock, WI Sarah Alice RICHARDSON b. 14Nov1841 in Janesville, Rock, WI." The above mentioned John Clark Rush and Mahala had a grandson named Henry Clay Holmes b 3 Feb 1853 in Perry, Lawrence, Indiana. He was the son of John Holmes and Mary Ann Nantz. He was married to Eliza Alice Ruthledge 30 Dec 1874 and died 20 May 1928 in same place. Would appreciate hearing from anyone with info on these individuals/families. Thanks Dorothy Dailey [email protected] ________________________________________________________________________
