    1. INFORMATION ON SAMUEL HOLMES'S BY [email protected]
    2. Steve Leeper
    3. On Monday June 29, a message was sent in with information on Samuel Holmes's as extracted from the Ancestral Files of the Mormon Family History Center. I just wanted to comment on two of the entries. #7 I have it in my records that this Samuel Holmes (son of Obadiah and Katherine Hyde Holmes and husband of Alice Stillwell) was baptised on March 20, 1642 in Salem, MA (i.e., was not necessarily born on that date). "Samuel Holmes, the son of Obadiah and Katherine Hyde Holmes, was born in America and was baptized at Salem on March 20, 1642. He married Alice Stillwell, daughter of Nicholas and Ann Stillwell, on October 26, 1665; they settled in Gravesend, Long Island. He died in 1678 or 1679. As of the 1930s, some of his descendants still lived in Gravesend on Staten Island, New York." #13 The father of this Samuel Holmes (born 1676, son of Sarah Borden Holmes) was Johnathan Holmes (1633/34-1712/13, son of the Rev. Obadiah and Katherine Hyde Holmes), who married Sarah Borden (1644-1705/08, daughter of ). My information has it that this Samuel Holmes died after 1769. Regarding the parents of Sarah Borden, I have the following: "Richard Borden was born in Kent, England in 1595/96 or in 1601. On September 28, 1625, he married Joana/Jean/Joan Fowler (Fowle). Joana Fowler was born on February 15, 1604. Richard and Joana Borden came to America in 1635 and settled in Massachusetts. At some time, thereafter, they moved to Portsmouth, Rhode Island, some 10 miles north of Newport. They were among Rhode Island's earliest settlers and were some of the most prominent citizens of that colony. Joana Fowler Borden died in July 1688. The date of the death of Richard Borden is not known." Steve Leeper

    1. Wm. A. Holmes, Alabama 1880
    2. RF & WL Strother
    3. Re: Holmes in Alabama Facts: (1)Wm. Holmes married Sarah Gothard on 6 August 1866 in Talladega Co. (2)John Strother b 1833 married Nancy Gothard, b 1835, ca. 1854 in Randolph Co. (This is a guess as Randolph Co. records burned in 1895. However, their oldest child was b 1855, and John's brother Enoch Green Strother married Elizabeth Gothard in Randolph Co., according to his pension application. From George Gothard's probation of estate in 1868 we learned that Sarah, Nancy and Elizabeth were sisters.) (3) 1880 Clay Co., AL census: W.A. Holmes, age 37, wife Sarah, age 28, children: Emma 11, Ella 10, Thomas 8, Cordelia 7, Louisa 5, Assina 4, Soleta 2. (4) 1898 Clay Co., AL. W.T. Holmes married Annie Harris; bond W.T. Holmes and W.T. Harris. (5) 1894 Coosa Co., AL. Seleta Holmes married Wm.T. Harris. (6) 1894 Clay Co., AL. Thomas J. Strother married Martha "Mattie" J. Harris. (7) We believe these three Harrises are siblings and are the children of W.T.M. Harris and Elizabeth Little: (1880 Clay Co. census) Mary A., b 1871, Martha J., b 1872, Wm. T., b 1876. (8) Thomas J. Strother, b 1872, was the son of John and Nancy Gothard Strother. (9) 1889 Coosa Co., AL. Wm. T. Holmes married Anna Baker; ceremony performed by Isah Holmes, M.G.; bond by W.T. Holmes and J.A. Baker. (10) 1910 Clay Co., AL census: Wm.A. Holmes, age 40, wife Mary E., age 40; children: James 19, Lizzie C., 17, Claudie 14, Mancel 12, G.A. 7, Hassie F. 4, Cassie M. 4, Jessie C. 2, Essie U. 2. (11) 1850 Coosa Co., AL census: (dwelling # 254) Thomas Holmes, age 27, b SC, wife Nancy, age 26, b GA; children William 7, b AL, Martha 2, b AL. (12) Same census, dwelling # 255: Isah Holmes, age 24, b SC, wife Eliz., age 28, b GA; children: Thomas 5, b GA, William 8, b GA, Perote 7,, b GA, James 5, b GA, Cordelia 4, b AL, Mary 3, b AL, Ann 2, b AL, Eliz. 8/12, b AL. Questions: (1) Who was W.A. Holmes' father? Thomas had a son William b 1843; Isah had a son William b 1842. The 1880 census lists W.A. Holmes at age 37, which could be either of the above, depending on when the census was taken. (2) Who is Wm.A. Holmes, age 40, with wife Mary E., age 40, in the 1910 Clay Co. census? According to the ages of their children, they would have had to be married before 1890 or 1891. So this could not be the same Wm.T. Holmes who m Annie Harris in 1898, unless it was his second marriage, and he was the same as Wm. T. Holmes who m Anna Baker in 1889. 1. ELIAS HOLMES-Patriotic or factional.
    2. Claude Montpetit
    3. Fellow members, Elias joined the British army just about in time for its fall to American forces in1776. He spent the next two years in jail,at his own expense and had his property con- fiscated. There should be records of his capture, imprisonment and property seizure. Would a member be kind enough to advise how we could get this information. Elias is another New Jersey HOLMES that seems hard to "place". There are a lot of HOLMES in Connecticut that moved to Jersey, that were weavers as Elias was,as well as another with the same name of Elias. We just cant connect them. Help is welcome. Thanks Claude Montpetit

    3. Just to add some fuzziness to a fuzzy situation: Francis Holmes came to Massachusetts from York County, England is about 1635 and settled eventually in Stamford, Conn. where some four children are identified. One son, John, married Rachel Waterbury and slipped over into Bedford, N.Y. where he had some ten children, including: Captain Jonathan, born 1674 in Stamford, Conn., who married Dorothy Roberts and was in Bedford, N.Y. by 1698. Only two children have been identified of J and D. Capt. Jonathan and Dorothy had a Jonathan Jr. by 1703; but I cannot tie anything to a Samuel Holmes for the right time to be the father of Lydia. This Bedford, N.Y. line has a lot of Stephen's, Richard's and John's and the Stephen line over in Stamford had some Samuel's.

Supposely this Samuel was the brother of Jonathan. Does anyone know the parents of Jonathan and Samuel Holmes **************************************************************** I can provide the following information based on the information that has been passed down to me from Mary Leeper Long (1866-1939), who obtained it from a Holmes Family Bible/ History and other Holmes Family sources. Some dates were obtained from "Ancestors and Descendants of William Browning Greene and Mary Hoxie Lewis with Allied Families" by William E. Wright, Gateway Press, Inc., Baltimore, 1993, pages 246 to 249 (Los Angeles Public Library: Call No. R929.2 G799-13). The wording of the information passed on to me by Mary Leeper Long and published in Wright are highly similar, indicating to me that they came from the same original source. Point 1. I also could not get through to the website at http://members.aol.com/kjtcet2/scott.html Point 2. The Lydia Holmes mentioned in these messages cannot be the daughter of Johnathan and Sarah Borden Holmes. According to the will of Johnathan Holmes (who married Sarah Borden), which was prepared in 1705, they did have a daughter named Lydia (but this cannot be the same Lydia Holmes). Johnathan Holmes, son of the Rev. Obadiah and Katherine Hyde Holmes, was born in Manchester, England, in 1633/34, and died in Newport, RI, in 1713. Sarah Borden Holmes, was born in 1645 and died in Newport, RI, between 1705 and 1708. The subject Lydia Holmes was stated to have been born in Newport, RI, in 1715/1716, after the deaths of Johnathan and Sarah Borden Holmes. Point 3. I have no futher information on the Lydia Holmes who was the daughter of Johnathan and Sarah Borden Holmes. Point 4. The parent of the subject Lydia Holmes is quite possibly a Samuel Holmes; their are many of them. Point 5. The subject Lydia Holmes could well be a descendant of the Rev. Obadiah Holmes, as they had many sons, who had many sons. The Rev. Obadiah and Katherine Hyde Holmes had the following children: Johnathan Holmes: b. in Manchester, England, in 1633/34; m. Sarah Borden in 1665; d. in Newport, RI, in 1713. John Holmes: b. 1633; d. infancy Lidiah Holmes: b. ?; m. Capt. John Brown in 1663; d. ? Obadiah Holmes: bap. 6/9/1644; m. Elizabeth Cooke; d. 1722/23 or 1732 Samuel Holmes: bap. 3/20/1642; m. Alice Stillwell on 10/26/1665; d. 1678/79 Joseph Holmes: b. 1646(?); d. before 1682 John Holmes: b. in Newport, RI, 1639 or 1649; m. (1) Frances Holden on 12/1/1671 and (2) Mary Sayles Green (10/12/1680); d. 10/2/1742 Hopestill Holmes: b. early in 1640; bap. 5/13/1640; m. John Odlin in 1660; d. 12/1711 Mary Holmes: b. ?; m. John Brown; d. ? (may be the same person as Lydiah Holmes, who married a John Brown). Point 6. The subject Lydia Holmes, if a descendant of the Rev. Obadiah and Katherine Hyde Holmes, is most likely a grand daughter or even a great grand daughter, based on the date of her birth. Point 7. I only have additional children for the children of the Rev. Obadiah and Katherine Hyde Holmes, for Lydiah (partial) and Johnathan (complete). Of course, the subject Lydia Holmes could not be descended from John and Lydiah Holmes Brown. As stated above, Johnathan and Sarah Borden Holmes could not be the parents of the subject Lydia Holmes. Based on Johnathan's will (dated 1705), Johnathan and Sarah Borden Holmes had 9 children: Obadiah, Johnathan, Samuel, Sarah, Mary, Catherine, Martha, Lydia, and Joseph. I only have reliable information for Obadiah (b. 7/17/1766; m. Alice Ashton; d. 1745) and Johnathan (b. 1672-1681; m. ?; d. 1766), but note that one of the children was named Samuel. Could this Samuel be the father of Lydia, born 1715/16? He might be between 33 (if born in 1682) and 49 (if born in 1666). The subject Lydia Holmes could even be another generation away from this Samuel Holmes or have descended from one of the other sons of the Rev. Obadiah and Katherine Hyde Holmes. Point 8. Her father could indeed be a Samuel Holmes, but, I am sorry to say, that I cannot help identify the correct Samuel Holmes. We can, however, avoid incorrectly calling her the daughter of Johnathan and Sarah Borden Holmes. Point 9. A lot of Holmes family descendants did end up in New Jersey. Point 10. I hope I have not offended or bored anyone. I am just trying to shed some light on fuzzy stuff from a long time ago. A grateful Holmes Family descendant, Steve Leeper
