(All of this information came from a book about the >genealogy of the Lincolns). > *********************************************** Dear DarLynn: Your Lydia Holmes is the same as Lydiah, daughter of the Rev. Obadiah and Katherine Hyde Holmes. I would be very interested in knowing the name and author of the book you mention. Does this book say the name is John Bowne? The notes I have clearly say the name is Browne and that this family started Browne University. After copying the following information, I have incorporated some of your listed details into my account. In other words, the information I provide to you is as it was before incorporating your information. I have the following, with the name Browne (as in Browne University), on Lydia Holmes. I have also included information on Mary Holmes, daughter of the Rev. Ob. and K. H. Holmes, as Edwin Salter indicates that Mary Holmes may have been his ancestor and the woman who married John Brown. Perhaps you can help clear the confusion. Again the source of the bulk of the following information is the hand written notes of Mary Leeper (1866-1939), who became Mary Leeper Long of Carrollton, OH, as copied from a Holmes Family Bible. I added the information in [...]. **************************************************** LIDIAH HOLMES: Lidiah (also spelled Lydia and Lydiah) Holmes, the daughter of Obadiah and Katherine Hyde Holmes, was born in America; her birth date is not known. She married Captain John Browne in 1663. John Browne had been one of the original negotiators for land in the Monmouth country during a exploration of that area in 1664 or 1665. Johnathan Holmes, the brother of Lydiah, had also been one of the original explorers of the Monmouth country and had participated in the negotiations with the Indians. John Browne was one of the original 12 patentees of the Monmouth (or Nicolls) Patent. John and Lydiah Holmes Browne moved from Newport to Gravesend, Long Island soon after their marriage. The father and mother of John Browne, William and Ann Browne, had been neighbors of the Holmes' in Salem, Massachusetts. In 1667, John and Lydiah Holmes Browne moved from Gravesend to Middletown, East Jersey. [The number of children that John and Lydiah Holmes Browne had is not known, but some information is available on two of their children.] Obadiah Browne: Obadiah Browne, the son of John and Lidiah Holmes Browne, was born on July 18, 1666. Nothing else is known of him. Sarah Browne: Of special note is daughter Sarah, who married Richard Saltar. Hannah, the daughter of Richard and Sarah Saltar, became the wife of Mordecai Lincoln and the mother of "Virginia" John Lincoln. This "Virginia" John Lincoln was the father of the Abraham Lincoln who settled in Kentucky and was killed by Indians there in the 1780s. This Abraham Lincoln was the grandfather of Abraham Lincoln, the President of the United States. Therefore, the Rev. Obadiah and Katherine Hyde Holmes were the fifth great grandparents of Abraham Lincoln. In addition, Hannah Brown Saltar had a son, named Edwin Saltar; he lived in New Jersey and was said to be from the Holmes line. Edwin Saltar wrote the Early Dutch Settlers and wrote an article on Rev. Obadiah Holmes which was printed in the Monmouth Democrat newspaper of September 6, 1888. Near the close of this article, he wrote: "The Rhode Island accounts of the family state that Mary born about 1648, daughter of Rev. Obadiah Holmes, was married to John Browne, born 1634, son of Rev. Chad Browne. This Browne Family is the one distinguished in Rhode Island and from some of its members Browne University took its name." [The quoted statements are not guaranteed to be actual quotes from the article of Edwin Saltar, but appear to be quotes in the hand written notes of Mary Leeper Long on the Holmes Family. The account that the wife of John Browne was named Mary contradicts other information about the Holmes Family, saying that Lydiah had been the wife of John Browne. Could Lydiah and Mary have been the same person, as in that Lydiah was named Lydiah Mary Holmes or Mary Lydiah Holmes?] MARY HOLMES: Mary, the daughter of Obadiah and Katherine Hyde Holmes, was born in America. [According to Edwin Saltar (great grandson of Obadiah Holmes), in the September 6, 1888 issue of the Monmouth Democrat newspaper, Mary Holmes is said to have married John Browne. Lydiah Holmes also married a John Browne. Based on various sources (cited above), Martha and Mary were different persons, who each married a man name John Browne (i.e., there may have been two John Brownes).] ********************************** Steve Leeper

    1. SARAH HOLMES WHO MARRIED WILLIAM SLADE
    2. Steve Leeper
    3. Lorrie in KC,MO: I think you may not find Sarah as a daughter of the Rev. Obadiah Holmes, as she is (according to my information) his grand daughter. Obadiah would have been 63 in 1669, whereas Johnathan Holmes (her father, according to my records) would have been about 39. She also is more likely to have been born in Middletown, East Jersey (New Jersey), as that is where her parents appear to have lived in 1669. I have the following information, copied by my great great aunth, Mary Leeper Long, from the Holmes family Bible, on Johnathan and Sarah Holmes: Johnathan Holmes (1633/34 - 1712/13) Johnathan Holmes, the second child of Obadiah and Katherine Hyde Holmes was born near Manchester, England, in 1633 or 1634. He came with his parents to America in 1638 and lived with them in Salem and Rehoboth and near Newport, RI. In 1665, Johnathan Holmes married Sarah Borden, born in 1644. Prior to the issue of the Monmouth Patent on April 8, 1665, Johnathan visited the Monmouth country and, with others, negotiated with the Indian Sachems for lands in that part of East Jersey (now New Jersey). He was joined in this endeavor by a Captain John Browne, who was by then married to Johnathan's sister, Lydiah Holmes. Sometime during 1665, perhaps after the issue of the Monmouth Patent, Johnathan and his wife joined John and Lydiah Holmes Browne to reside with them in their home in Gravesend, while the Patent and settlement plans were under consideration. In the year 1667, Johnathan Holmes helped to found Middletown, Monmouth County, East Jersey (now New Jersey). His residence there dates from 1667. On page 45, of deed book B, Monmouth County records is a deed from five Indian Sachems to Johnathan Holmes dated August 12, 1667. This deed was drawn up to extinguish the Indian title to the land, so that when the conditions of the Monmouth Patent were complied with, the land would carry over to him clear of claims and encumbrances. The 16 to 18 years that Johnathan Holmes spent in Middletown are full of interest. Johnathan Holmes was one of the organizers of the First Baptist Church of Middletown, NJ. His father, the Rev. Obadiah Holmes, was present at the organization in the year 1667. He went on to hold many posts of honor and responsibility. On September 12, 1673, during trouble between the English and the Dutch, Johnathan Holmes was chosen Captain with John Smith, Lieutenant, and, by order of the Council of War, was mustered into military service the next day. Thereafter, he was known as Captain Johnathan Holmes. In late 1683/early 1684, Johnathan and most of his family, except his son Obadiah (see Obadiah Holmes 1666 - 1745, below), moved back to Newport, RI. In his father's will, dated April 9, 1682, Johnathan was named as the sole executor of the estate. He may have been drawn back to Newport in order to settle the estate and care for his mother. Johnathan Holmes was active in public affairs from the time he moved to New Jersey in 1667 until he retired from public life in Newport, RI, on May 6, 1707, in his 74th year. Johnathan Holmes died in Newport, RI, in 1713. Sarah Borden Holmes died between 1705 and 1708 (?) in Newport, RI. Based on his will (dated 1705), Johnathan and Sarah Borden Holmes had 9 children: Obadiah, Johnathan, Samuel, Sarah, Mary, Catherine, Martha, Lydia, and Joseph. Nothing is known of any of the children, except for Obadiah and Johnathan. OBADIAH HOLMES: Obadiah Holmes, the first child of Johnathan and Sarah Borden Holmes, was born on the 17th of July 1666. He married Alice Ashton. A descendant of this Obadiah Holmes, Margaret Masters, married into the Leeper family (William Alexander Leeper of Leesville, OH). JOHNATHAN HOLMES: Johanthan Holmes was born in 1672, 1675, or 1681. He married, first, Rebecca Throckmorton and, second, Deliverance Ashton. The parents of Deliverance Ashton were The Rev. James, Jr. and Deliverance Throckmorton Ashton. Johnathan Holmes died in 1766. Johnathan and Deliverance Ashton Holmes had at least six children. SAMUEL HOLMES: Samuel Holmes was born at Newport, RI in 1676 (Mormon Church Ancestral Records) and died after 1769. SARAH HOLMES: Sarah Holmes, born about 1669, married William Slade of Rehoboth and Swansea, MA. Their daughter, Elizabeth Slade (1695-1772), married Barnard Haile (1687-1754) of Swansea, MA, and Warren, RI. Through the Holmes discussion list at RootsWeb (http://www.rootsweb.com), Steve Leeper communicated with the 7X great granddaughter (Dorothy J. Hornus) of Sarah Holmes Slade in 1998. Dorothy Hornus is also descended from Martha Holmes Audley, the sister of Johnathan Holmes. MARY HOLMES(?): Mary Holmes married into the Easton family. CATHERINE HOLMES(?): Catherine Holmes married into the Waitman or Whiteman family. MARTHA HOLMES(?): Martha Holmes was born in 1675 and married Phillip Tillinghast in 1692. She died in 1728. JOSEPH HOLMES(?): Joseph Holmes was born between 1676 and 1682. He died in about 1746. ******************** I have additional inoformation on Sarah Borden and Obadiah Holmes, the brother of Sarah Holmes, if any one is interested. Steve Leeper

    2. Donald A. Poland
    3. I wonder if someone might be able to shed some light on this situation. For four or five years, I've been looking for the parents/siblings of Sarah Emma Holmes Poland, a g-grandmother, without any luck whatsoever. Then earlier this week I discovered she remarried in 1917 after Charles E. Poland, her first husband, died (in 1914). On the second marriage license application, Sarah Emma listed her birth date as 17 August 1857, her place of birth as Delaware County, OH, her mother as Catherine Johnson and her father as Elmer J. CHERRYHOLMES. Everyone in the family thought her maiden name was Holmes, and now it turns out to be Cherryholmes. Has anyone heard of this name before? Do you know of others who've shortened their names to Holmes? It's long been believed that Sarah Emma Holmes was part American Indian. Any comments, suggestions appreciated. Don

    2. Patricia Shoemaker
    3. Does anyone have info on Samuel Holmes, who was in Ulster Co. & Orange Co., NY in the early 1700's? His wife's name was En Hobbeson. Three of their children were baptized 4 Jul 1733 at Minisink, Orange Co., NY by the minister of the Kingston, NY Dutch Reformed Church. I don't think these three were triplets as the baptism records usually indicate that -- there were lots of baptisms that day, so the minister was probably making his rounds of the churches he served. A fourth child may be Eleanor Holmes who was b. about 1735. She md. William Terry in Bucks Co., PA 26 May 1756. My ancestor is Mary Holmes who md. Joseph Wheeler 4 Sep 1748 in the Smithfield, Bucks Co., PA Reformed Dutch Church. The marriage record indicates that Maria was born at Smithfield, so it may be that her parents lived there and made the trip to Minisink, NY to have the children baptized. I'd be happy to share what little info I have on this family. Any help will be greatly appreciated! Pat Shoemaker Phoenix, AZ (Boy, is it hot here!) [email protected]
