I am researching my fathers family. I have very little information at this point. Below, you will see the info that I do have. Glenn Holmes, b. 1931 in Hardin Co., TX, d. 1993 in Harris Co., TX, (buried in Hardin Co.), m. Bonnie L. Savoy (my parents) Clayton Holmes, b. 1903, d. 1949 (buried in Tyler Co,, TX), m. Inez Walters (my grandparents) Robert Washington Holmes, b.1867, d. 1952 (buried in Tyler Co., TX), m. Mary Eboline Overstreet (my great-grandparents) My great-grandmother was the daughter of Daniel 'Dan' Overstreet, from Conecuh County, Alabama. The Overstreets have proven to be very prominent in the south. I have not been able to determine where my great-grandfather (Robert Washington Holmes) was born, or who his parents and other family members are. I look forward to hearing more from this mailing list in the near future. Thanks, Pamela Holmes Serda Robert W.Holmes 1867>Clayton Holmes 1903 TX>Glenn Holmes 1931 TX

Hi Carolyn, I would be interested in any information you have on Irish Holmeses. My ggrandfather was a Holmes from Irleland. He came to Boston in 1887 according to the 1900 census. His name was Dennis Holmes and his parents were listed on his marriage certificate as James Holmes and Hannah ? My grandfather and siblings were removed from the home of Dennis and his wife Mary between 1895 and 1900 due to some situation I have yet to uncover and I am the first to even have known who they were. All of the above were born in Ireland. A prison situation would not be out of the question so I am interested in anything I can find. Thanks! Jane Holmes Godfrey
I just ran across some papers in my file that has prisoners HOLMES listed from Ireland. the names I have are John 1837, Esther <aka Etta>1825, John no date, Bridget 1848, Thomas 1851, John 1837, Eliza <fm> 1836, Joseph 1847, Thomas 1845, Thomas 1845, James 1848, Michael 1848, and Richard 1848. If anyone is interested in the rest of the information, please contact me. I also found a list that is from Leichester Parrish that has 50 Holmes listed for birth, death, christining and marriage. I only have the names and event on this list. But it might give you a clue which Parrish to look for in Leicester County. (In Scotland I believe) Let me know names and I'll see what I have. Carolyn

This was in a book titled: "In search of your British and Irish Roots, byGenealogical Publishing Company, 1991, reprint" Eldest son: often named for the fathers father second son: for the mothers father third son: for the father fourth son: for the fathers eldest brother eldest daughter: for the mothers mother second daughter: for the fathers mother third daughter: for the mother fourth daughter: for the mothers eldest sister daughters sometimes were given feminine forms of their fathers name: Georgianna/George, Pauline/Paul, Willie/William, Jessie/Jesse, Charlotte/Charles. Just thought maybe someone would find this interesting.. :) Carolyn
Don't know if anyone is looking for these names, wish they were my line. :( But found them tonight in the Frederick Co, Winchester, Virginia site. (info below) They were in reference of Assessment fees and amounts of Tobacco given, from the year 1744 one entry is 1753/1754 reguarding the largest assessment: Frederick County Virginia-Col. James Wood's Fee Book Anno Dom 1744 name ---------- pounds of tobacco Leonard Helms 65 Joseph Helms 155 William Hume 113 George Hume 220 Largest Assessments were: 1753/1754 Helm and Roberts (a firm) 606 pounds Leonard Helm 575 pounds also noted was: Additional marriage fees collected by Col. Wood to give to Gov. Gooch Leonard Helm in March 1744 (name of bride not given) "The Frederick County Fee Book signed by the Sheriff, Meredith Helm, dated 17 Jan 1754" Hope someone can use this, I did copy the exact web site address if anyone has trouble locating this information. Good luck.. :) Carolyn
I just ran across this in a book and I thought that maybe you all would find it interesting. I know I have a couple dates where it is marked 1752/53. Maybe this will help others. Carolyn "The year 1752 is important to remember as you begin your genealogical research. The Julian calendar was supplanted by the Gregorian calendar in the Roman Catholic countries in 1582. But it's acceptance in Great Britain and her colonies did not occur until 2 September 1752. Eleven days were added to the count to compensate for an accumulation of errors in the Julian calendar. There are interesting tales about people gathering in mobs to protest taking away 11 (eleven) days of their lives! However; the other change made at that time is a little more difficult to perceive. Because of differing customs among the settlers, the New Year began on 25 March or on Jan 1st. When the calendar was changed, the Parliament also established 1 January 1752 as the legal New Years Day. Birthdays of people then had to be expressed as Old Style or New Style. For example, a date would be written as 14 February 1727/28 (or 1727/8). This means that the event took place in 1727 if the year was thought to begin on 25 March but the birthdate was in 1728 if the year was thought to begin on 1 January. Since the 25 March date is the turning point, only dates from 1 January to 24 March have to be indicated in the above way."
Looking for information on Thomas HOLMES of Brooke County, WV. In his will dated 1 Oct 1829, Thomas names his wife Anne, sons Isaac and Thomas, and daughters Margaret ATKINSON, Jane ALLISON, Anne RALSTON, Izebele RUSSLE, Lucinda Priscilla RALSTON (born 7 Mar 1795, wife of Joseph Ralston), and Elizabeth WILEY. According to a bio of his grandson, Thomas Holmes RALSTON, in Beers Commemorative Biographical Record of Washington County, PA, the first Thomas was married to Nancy McNEELY. The two were natives of County Donegal, Ireland. They came to the States about 1789 and lived for a short time in New York City before moving to Brooke County, WV. Thomas was said to be 96 years old when he died (his will was recorded in March of 1832). His wife Nancy lived on to be over 100 when she died at the home of her son Isaac in Guernsey County, OH. I am descended from Thomas Holmes through his daughter Lucinda Priscilla Ralston. Any information will be appreciated.

Ada Frances Holmes was the daughter of James Shadrach Holmes (1788 NC-18607 MS) and second wife Frances Howard. Ada Frances and husband Chambers had 2 children. After his death she remarried William Worth Walker and had five children. James Shadrach Holmes and first wife Keziah Cox had 13 children. Dear List, I'm hoping you can help me out here. I have been doing geneology for 20 years but can still not find the parents of my great-grand mother Mary E. Holmes. Mary E. Holmes was born in Ohio in May of 1849. She married Samuel Knight or McKnight on Feb. 1, 1870 in Daviess Co., MO. She suffered from strokes for 13 years and her daughter, Maude (Mc) Knight who married Ed Potter, took care of her during those years. They moved to Arkansas, town unknown. According to census records both of Mary E. Holmes parents were born in NY. Maude and Ed had no children, but my father, A.J. Roberts, used to spend time on their farm when he was a child during the summers of his youth. Maude had two sisters, my grandmother Margaret Ann (McKnight). She was born on Nov. 8, 1881 and was the third wife of George Francis (Frank) Roberts. They married on Aug. 20, 1913 in Cameron, MO. The other sister, Cora, never married. My relatives have no info on the Holmes family. I can not get Mary's death certificate as I do not know her exact county of death. I have searched census records in OH and MO to no avail. Please help! Karen ([email protected]) P.S. I have books on DeKalb Co., MO and Estill Co., KY if anyone needs look- ups.
Also looking for any knowledge of James Thomas Holmes, was an Uncle to my grandfather Joe Quincy Holmes, Kaboo (?) Missouri and Virgil Holmes from the Ozarks. The name DORA PHIPPS (Phips) could be Dora Holmes (an aunt), looking for information reguarding these names. Thank you

Hello, I would be grateful for any information concerning John HOLMES, a blacksmith of Diptford, Devon, who married Susanna HILL (widow) in the neighbouring parish of North Huish, Dev., on 18 Nov 1780. John died at Diptford on 23 Dec 1823 and was buried at North Huish two days later. His age at the time of death was either 77, as recorded in the burials register, or 78 as inscribed on his memorial at North Huish. A widespread search of parish registers in South Devon has failed to locate John's baptism, c. 1745 or 1746. There are two possible events at Mary Tavy, Dev., (a considerable distance from Diptford and North Huish) in 1745 and 1746 but I have no way of proving that either of them is the one I'm looking for. Any information or suggestions would be very much appreciated. Best wishes. Robin Holmes [email protected]
