    2. Though I don't know about Ms. Hutchinson, I do know about Holmes's in Washington County, PA, before and after the Rev. War. There is a book The Brown and Comly Families Genealogy. It has most of the story of the James Holmes (1748-1823). He and his wife Ann (Nancy) Whitaker Holmes had thirteen sons and one daughter. My guess is that your James is from this family Susan Mougalian

    3. I'm particularly interested in a William Holmes, born 1760, who was this William's father: (From: HISTORY OF INDIANAPOLIS AND MARION COUNTY INDIANA, by B.R. Sulgrove. Philadelphia, L.H. Everts & Co., 1884. Pg 656.) "William Holmes, the northeast quarter of section 8, in township 15, range 3; the west half of the northwest quarter of the same section; and the west half of the northwest quarter of section 9, same township and range. Mr. Holmes was born in Westmoreland County, Pa., in 1792, emigrated with his father’s family to Ohio in 1800, and in 1820 removed to Wayne County, Ind. In 1821 he married Elizabeth Lyons, and settled on his lands in Wayne Township, Marion Co., where he made his home during the remainder of his life. He built the Billy Holmes saw-mill on Eagle Creek, just below the National road bridge. In 1832 he was one of those who volunteered for service in the Black Hawk war. He was the father of William Canada Holmes, one of the best-known citizens of Marion County, and also of eleven other children, viz.: John B., Jonathan L., Ira N. Isaiah, Jeremiah, Uriah, Noah P., Marcia Ann, Martha Ann, Elizabeth, and Sarah. He died in 1859. His younger brother, John, came to this county with him, and settled in Wayne, on the northwest quarter of section 8, township 15, range 3. He, with his brother William, took the contract for the brick-work of the old (first) courthouse of Marion County. John also built the Kunkle mill, in Wayne township. He died a few years after he made his settlement here." Sound familiar to anyone (besides Dee, of course!)? Is anyone interested in doing a "Most Wanted" project again? It's been a while. I posted these odds and ends a couple of years ago after my last visit to the Family History Library. But because we have so many new subscribers to the Holmes list, here they are again. 3. Listee's I am trying to trace a HOLMES ancestor in Greenwich. Zadock Bates HOLMES appears in a marriage in New York City 1837. His Census listings indicate that he was born in Conn. in about 1812. My only connection to Greenwich is the fact that a Bates HOLMES resided there (1810, 1820 census). Assuming that Bates was a family name of his mother or grandmother, Zadock might certainly have been given that as his middle name. Bates was married to Mary BANKS in 1809 at the 2nd Cong. Church, and to Elizabeth BANKS in 1804 at the Stanwich Cong. Church. They may have been sisters, although Spencer Mead mentions only Mary. Bates died in 1859 and is buried in 'North Greenwich'. There were 4 HOLMES in Greenwich in 1800, but only Rueben had a male in household between 16 & 26, which would have been Bates' age at that time. Bates had a daughter Sally who joined the 2nd Cong Church in 1831. The 1820 Census shows 5 children in Bates' household but of course they might not have all been his. It also shows two males over 45, so Bates could have had a brother and children living with him. It also show no female over 16 yrs, so Mary may have died by that time. Any clue on the above would be greatly appreciated. Bill S
