I have been checking out the Holmes rootsweb for about 2 months now, hoping to find a connection to my g-g-grandfather. Thus far nothing has appeared. I am searching for any information anyone may have on Shadrack Holmes, born c.1788 in South Carolina. He moved to Hart County, Ga. (just over state line) around 1860. I found him on the 1870 Census with wife and children, the oldest of which was born in 1860. I know he died between 1871 and 1879. As he would have been about 62 when he moved to Georgia, I am assuming he had a family in S.C. before relocating here. I have been told, but cannot confirm anywhere, that his father's name was Gideon Holmes and that Gideon and Shadrack are on the 1830 S.C. census but I don't know in which county and thus far have been unable to find either of them. If anyone out there has any info on Shadrack Holmes, such as parents, siblings, location in S.C. or anything else at all, I sure would appreciate some help. Sandra Holmes Parker [email protected]
I found 1 Holmes listed in Starr's genealogy of old Cherokee Families. It was a Nannie Holmes who married a George Washington Benge. There is a surname index of this old book at http://members.aol.com/rarebk Once there, go to booklists and scroll down till you see the Starr book, and you can invoke the index from there. The site also has a Cherokee genealogy tutorial you can read on-line, showing how to do Cherokee genealogy research (and the most common problems associated with it), as well as the 18.. (forgot which) Cherokee census list, and other rare general genealogy resources. Hello: I am seeking information on Susanna Finney and Ebenezer Sampson and their family. Susanna Finney was the daughter of Josiah Finney of Plymouth and I noticed that her sister named Mary had married a gentleman named Joseph Holmes. Ebenezer Sampson died at sea in 1800 and his wife Susanna Finney Sampson and their children disappear from Plymouth records after 1810 along with Josiah Finney and his wife Alice Barnes Finney. I thought they could have gone wherever some of their family was settled. I thought maybe I cound contact the "Holmes" line to see if they had any clue where Susanna and her children migrated. The son Ebenezer eventually appears in New Bedford, BristolCty, MA with a son Benjamin in 1823 but no record of his wife. Hoping a "Holmes" family member might have some clues. Sincerely, Jeanne Carrier [email protected]

Just talked to Jean Dennison, she was a lady who had written a book on Holmes/Head Family. Because of all the new connections we are now coming into contact with we are thinking of revising, adding and updating.. Just wondering how many people would be interested in it. I don't have all the answers about it, we are only thinking about it. I know we have connected several branches with different surnames: Head/Parker/Justice/Dunker/Harmon and many more. If you might be interested, please contact me. We would like to get an idea before we go further with this project. Thanks Carolyn PS I will TRY to answer your questions :)
