In the late 1700s, he came to the U.S., settling for a time in New York before moving to Brooke County, VA (now West Virginia.) 1. My earliest Holmes- mid 1800s,Ohio
    2. My mother's maiden names was Holmes. She grew up in a huge, poor family in Louisiana. Her father (William Henry Holmes) was born in Ohio (we think) on October 8, 1848. His father must have died early because he and his brother threw their stepfather into the snow and left home (we think) when he was 8 years old. They cutoff from the family, never to return. He was in the Civil War with his brother who may have been named John (not sure). My mother thought he (William Henry) perhaps was courtmarshalled for shooting someone who did not halt when he called for them to halt. After the war, the two young men fell in love with the same woman. My grandfather lost and cutoff from his brother. He married someone (we think in Mississippi) and she died. Later on, he came to Louisiana where he met my grandmother, a widow (Ellen Catherine Whitehead Langley). They had a big family, which included two sons: William and Richard Lafayette. Richard Lafayette Holmes was brilliant, earned a ThD, did post doctoral studies in Hebrew at Yale and was in Who's Who in clergy. Most of William Henry Holmes' offsprings like school...poetry, theology, and art. I would love to find his family. There are several attorneys and physicians among his offsprings. 1. Gideon and James Holmes GA
    2. Rochelle T. White
    3. I am looking for information on James Holmes b 1790 in GA, son of Gideon Holmes. Gideon's will, dated 21 Feb 1811, was listed in Elbert Co., GA Deed Book N, page 130. It leaves most everything to his son James. James, I believe, married twice. He is found on the 1850 Elbert Co., GA census with a 35 year old woman named Nancy. There is 25 years difference in their ages. I find a marriage listing for James Holmes to Nancy Adams in Elbert Co., GA on 18 Oct 1829. They are on the 1830 and 1840 census also with the correct ages. Nancy would only have been about 14 when they married. Does anyone have information on either Gideon or James? Thanks, Rochelle

    3. I tried the FORM! I gave up! My earliest HOLMES: Cornelius HART married Norry HOLMES 30 Nov. 1838 in the Aghada Parish, Cork CO. Ireland. This is from the original church records and also included in the 1990 project at the Parish. Complete details of all the Holmes/Hart records are on my web site. Honora Holmes is buried in Brooklyn. I have no idea what happened to Cornelius. I don't know how and when they came to NY. The family did move to NJ and the City Directory records follow John Hart and Mathew Holmes in the Milk Business. These Directory are posted on my site. They had a son, John HART, in New York in 1856. I come from this line. I have all the data up to present time. It is possible that they also had a son, Thomas Hart, Dec 1838 in CORK. I have no other records on Thomas. This birth is in the church records. 3. John Holmes, believed to have married first Ann Bugbee in Vermont, about 1802, then Sarah Ann Towne of Oxford, Mass. about 1807. John and Sarah lived most of their lives in Colebrook, NH and had a large family. I have heard that Sarah was dau of David Dana Towne and Elizabeth Breed but have no proof. I would be very interested in the ancestry of John Holmes. Thanks for any info. Dave Collins

    2. Edward Holmes, a mason, son of John Holmes, a gardener, married Mary O'Gorman, spinster daughter of John O'Gorman, a farmer, 6 Nov 1849, at Kilmurry Parish Church, County Limerick, Ireland. They were residents of the townland of Rivers. Edward is thought to have been born in Limerick, before 1828. He died before 1871, place unknown. A son, Michael J, was born in 1851 and a daughter, Catherine, in about 1855, both probably in Limerick. Mary Holmes had 2 other children, whose names and birth dates are unknown. Michael J Holmes married Mary Ann O'Shea, daughter of Timothy O'Shea, a tailor (deceased), 22 Jan 1871, St Mary's Cathedral, Cork City, Ireland. A son, John, was born 19 Dec 1871, in Ireland. Michael was a tailor. He emigrated about 1872 to the 6th ward of Brooklyn. His wife joined him in 1875, but son John is thought to have remained in Ireland. Two children were born to Michael and Mary Ann in Brooklyn, Edward Emmet in 1876, and Catherine in 1877. Michael became a citizen in 1877 in Brooklyn. He then moved his family to Utica, NY. He drowned in the Erie Canal 13 Oct 1879. His wife and children moved to Chicago about 2 years later. SBT, Wellesley, MA

Gives his birthplace as GREAT YARMOUTH on the 1851 census. Married Mary SURNAME UNKNOWN born Kingsbury Green Middlesex England circa 1800.
