Date: 97-08-29 19:50:53 EDT From: LarkinP To: Holliday-L@rootsweb.com This is reply to my inquiry about convict list. ~Paula~ --------------------- Forwarded message: From: abyrnes@intercoast.com.au (Alan Byrnes) To: LarkinP@aol.com Date: 97-08-29 14:24:17 EDT >Would it be possible to ask Alan Byrnes for any further information: >occupation, rations size etc. that is available from the lists? >John Holliday 2504 >Chas Howeiday (sic) 2596 >Holloway, George 1584 >Holloway, S. 1706 >I will report anything you may send to the HOLLIDAY Genealogy Discussion >Group so you will not receive multiple requests. That is very much appreciated :-) John Snelson sent me your query. I compiled the database and did the analysis. The complete entries in the list are: NAME HOW EMPLOYED RATION =============================================== George Holoway Woodcutter 1 1/2 S. Holloway Pennant Hills 1 1/2 John Holliday Brickmaker 1 1/2 Chas Howeiday Grose Farm 1 1/2 =============================================== The 1 1/2 rations indicate all were either convicts or emancipists, very probably the former. George (note - it is Holoway, not Holloway) was one of 52 woodcutters employed in the colony. S. Holloway was one of 96 employed at "Pennant Hills" which was a government farm, about six kilometres from the Parramatta River. It was a source of timber for the colony, particularly shingles. The similar employments may indicate a similar background prior to transportation. John was one of 92 brickmakers. There were three separate gangs. I do not know what site he was working at. Chas Howeiday was one of 138 with `Grose Farm' in their `How Employed' column. There are no overseers listed but there is a connection between Grose Farm and two earlier entries. One is George Ibbotson, with overseer in his `How Employed' column. He is shown on the return of December 1820 as `Bullock breaker, Grose Farm'. (Note: I have extracted some text from my analysis - the return of December 1820 is a reference to another document.) Grose Farm was about three kilometres from Sydney and used for supplying grass and grain for Government working horses and oxen. By the title of an overseer there it was also used for breaking in bullocks - in other words, Chas may have had an agricultural background prior to transportation. Victualling was done weekly which means lists were compiled weekly and were only a routine chore for clerks. This particular list covered 68 foolscap pages. It seems it is the only copy of a victualling list which has survived. Persons victualled were: 1. Free settlers and emancipists whose position entitled them to a weekly ration. In many cases, their family and servants were also victualled. 2. Convicts employed by the Government. 3. The Military. 4. Objects of charity. The reason for the list was only to satisfy an accountancy system and not to record accurate details of the recipients. That is, the list is NOT a muster. It is of most use to researchers who know the name of a person who was in the Colony of New South Wales in September, 1821. The position of that person's name on the list may then provide information about what that person was doing and their location on September 8, 1821. RATIONS are either a quarter (for children), half (for women), one (for men) or one and a half (for convict workers). The quantity of a ration changed during Macquarie's period depending on available food but as at September, 1821 the weekly ration would have probably consisted of seven pounds of either beef or mutton, seven pounds of flour plus sugar, tea and some vegetables. On September 8, 1821 a total of 4,388 persons were issued with rations. The number of rations was 5,440½ The magnitude of the weekly victualling would have been considerable, the meat alone was more than seventeen tonnes. Alan Byrnes.
Hi, I am new to the list. My ggggrandfather was Mitchell Holloway m. Catherine Valentine in Sumner County TN Dec 20, 1824. I know almost nothing about him. He is listed on the 1830 Sumner County census with two children. My gggrandmother, Mary Holloway m. Samuel Sanders Sumner County TN in 1842. They moved to Logan County KY and are on the 1850 census there. So is Catherine Holloway. She is buried in Logan County. There is a Mary Holloway on the 1830 Sumner Co TN census also. Does anyone know anything about this family. Thanks. Joyce Sanders Moore

Gary, Tried to get my 10 messages for 8/24/97. Was able to get only 4 of them. Don't know if all were from Rootsweb or not. Anyway to resend or check it for me? Appreciate it if you can.
Gary, I didn't know you had a Holloway list. I'm on the Golden. I have an interest in the Holloway name in Chickasaw, Calhoun Co. Ms. and before that Tuscaloosa Al. Do you have any Holloway connections along these counties? My great grandmother was raised for a time with some Holloways, a connection through marriage I think but I'm always interested in finding more details. Looking to find information on early VA HOLLOWAY family. Anyone with information on this or other early Va HOLLOWAY'S please forward it to me. Theresa G. Kingsley GKings1981@aol.com John HOLLOWAY and Hannah Spiers- HOLLOWAY; Three of their children that I know of: William HOLLOWAY d. 1800-10 NC m. Frances Meador, b. 1730-2 VA, d. bef 1800 NC; Jane HOLLOWAY b. 4 Feb 1733 VA, d. bef 1824; m. John Meador b. 14 Jul 1734 VA, d. 1825-1826 Va; Mary HOLLOWAY, d. 1767 Cumberland Co. VA; m. Jonas Meador, Jr. b. 1728 VA, d. Oct 1773 Cumberland Co.VA. William HOLLOWAY and family, purchased land in Lunenburg Co. VA in 1751, later he sold and moved to Franklin Co. VA (now Bedford) by 1762 where he is recorded as having bought 118 acres on Indian Creek. William is recorded as having sold and bought much land in Franklin, VA. Later he joined in the general movement to North Carolina and may have setteled in Washington Co. NC. There are other HOLLOWAYs listed on the early census records for Perquimas Co. NC and Buncumbe Co. NC; The natural migration of people would have taken some of these HOLLOWAYS to TN an onward. It is possible that these early HOLLOWAYS are the forebarers of many of the HOLLOWAYS in TN and other southeren States of America. If we can get these HOLLOWAYS together then we have a good chance of getting the family together elsewhere. If you are interested in checking out records for these (mentioned) and other counties please let me know; Anything that we can do together will benefit us all. Theresa K. Lancaster, CA

Joseph Hastings (1757-1816) in Hillsborough Orange NC in 1777. Later moved to Bedford Co TN. The Hastings were Tories during the Rev War. Thus, my brief Holloway connection. I'd appreciate any help in finding from whence Robert Holloway came. Bob Clark in Portland OR Clarkpdx@aol.com

Hi All I am seeking information about Mrs Elizabeth (nee ?) HARDESTY who married John HOLLOWAY in Fountain Co IN on 27 Sept 1835. It is my assumption that she was widowed/divorced between 1830-35 and is a relic of one of the 7 HARDESTY families who were neighbors of Mr HOLLOWAY in the 1830 Fountain Co census. In 1840 the family was in Warren Co IN (I think). The 1850 census (Jasper Co IN) indicates that the family group consisted of John age 56 b. NC; Elizabeth age 47 b. OH; James HOLLOWAY age 20 (John's son from his earlier marriage ?); Isaac Hardesty (sp Horrdesty, Elizabeth's son from her earlier marriage ?); and John D. age 11; William age 9; & Elizabeth I. age 7; (the latter three being products of the 1835 union). I am descended from the only child of their son John D., who along with his brother William both died in Civil War service. I have no clue at this point of the fate of the young Elizabeth or of James or any of either side of the first families' offspring. I am seeking aid in/from any direction that would increase my knowledge about any of my HOLLOWAY/HARDESTY connections. -- Darwin Newton Cambridge KS denewton@sktc.net
Geraldine MILLER looking for more information on my 2nd great grandmother Manervy HOLLOWAY born 1841 MO according to the 1860 Dent Co.MO census. This is the only census I have found her on. She married Jesse Allen BLACKWELL in Dent Co. MO, Jan 1860. Does anyone know who her parents were or did she have any siblings? Where did they go or what happened to her & Jesse after they married. Their son married Jan 1887 in Dent Co. MO & he is on a 1900 Howell Co. MO census & on the 1910 Craighead Co. AR census. Thanks.
